Gustavus Adolphus or (Gustav II Adolf) was king of Sweden from 1611 until 1632. He is remembered by many as the father of modern warfare due to his innovative strategies on the battlefield. During his reign as king and shortly after his death, Sweden grew from a small, regional power into one of the great powers of Europe.
His greatest victory was at the Battle of Breitenfeld in 1631 during the Thirty Years War. There, he utilized all of his innovations into an overwhelming victory that cemented his legacy as a military pioneer and also elevated the status of the Swedish Empire for many years to come.

As a toddler Gustavus’ daughter Kristina took after him and he was very proud of her. He loved her the minute she was born and he didn’t care that she wasn’t a boy. Even as a one year old the sound of cannon fire made Kristina laugh instead of cry, and Gustavus was so proud of that that he took her with him when reviewing the troops. The last time they saw each other was when Kristina was three, she was annoyed that Gustavus wasn’t paying attention to her at the moment, but when he saw her he gave her a big hug and cried because it was like he knew he’d never see her again. And then after he left Kristina cried so hard for three days that she almost went blind from it, and she almost never cried even at that age. She wrote two letters to him all by herself in German asking him to come home soon and bring her something pretty.

Gustavus' daughter Christina renounced the Swedish throne, went to Italy and became a Catholic. She was set up in a roman palace with courtiers and hangers-on and was a great patron of the arts -the great composer Scarlatti was one of her protoges. There are at least 2 famous movies about her the most famous starring Greta Garbo.Very ironic in view of the fact that her father was the great Protestant hero during Thirty Years War!

Most interesting and edifying, thanks for the upload. Adolphus was mentioned in something I read about the use of the pike and the evolution of tactics. Many European armies began using variations on his tactics.
He was a long way ahead of his time in a variety of ways. The cross training that allowed cavalry troops to capture and use guns immediately and allowed artillery troops to be very mobile. the same with cross training pike men and musketeers, greatly increasing the ability to respond to changing conditions.
I was familiar with the name but not aware of the many things he did. His intelligence made the Swedish military stronger, more capable than much larger armies .

    • @onespiker

Merecir that he did( increadebly risky but it worked) it also payed for it self with that victory ( but the other wars he had was a not really financial great). So that were Karl XII came in and reformed the swedish army and navy and solved economic problems from Karl X.

    • @Jauhl1
      @Jauhl1 Před 6 lety +8

No he didn't. Sweden couldn't afford to have standing army of sufficient size to wage war in peace. Gustavus army was pretty much non-existent already in Baner and Tortestsson's days. Their field armies mainly consisting on German mercenaries, while Swedish nationals did garrison duty. In fact Sweden got the gigantic sum of 6 million thalers to demobilize their troops at the end of the 30 years war.
That Charles X could raise a great power army in 1654 was an amazing feat which almost bankrupted the country. Still he expanded Sweden to it's greatest size fighting virtually all of Europe.

Lion from the North conducted a war on Poland in A.D. 1626 before his invovement in Thirty Years War. Sweds were deafteted in Pomerania by great Polish hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski (also famous for his victories over Tatars and Turks) in the battles of Czarne (1627) and Trzciana (1629). In the second one Winged Hussars destroyed Gustav's cavalry in what he regarded as his worst defeat. At inconclusive battle of Tczew (1627) he get wound that would stop him from wearing armor. His fleet was also deafeted at battle of Oliwa (1627).
The war secured Polish control over that region and all of Poland from Sweds until the Deluge. 🇵🇱 🇸🇪

No, but France did finance part of the Swedish efforts since it was in their interest.
Sweden entered the war because the Holy Roman Empire were getting influence in the Baltic Sea and that was a threat to Sweden.

My father is a distant, very distant, relative to Gustavus Adolphus.
The story is that Gustavus Adolphus was killed in battle because he had a horse that he didn't ride very often, Streif I think he was named, he also had bad eyesight and was obese.
Streif got spooked by a cannonade and took of into the fog with Gustavus Adolphus wobbling around in the saddle.
When Gustavus Adolphus got control of the horse he couldn't see were he was because a King does not wear eyeglasses in public, popstrous notion these seeing eye glasses...
Streif got spooked a second time and threw Gustavus Adolphus to the ground.
He was soon surrounded by Croatian mercenaries, the Krabats, they were light cavalry and encircled the King shouting "Who are you?" and Gustavus Adolphus replied "I am the King of Sweden!".
So one Krabat tried to pull him up on his horse for this was a great price indeed, but the King being so obese he couldn't get him up on the horse, not without dismounting.
But dismounting during battle was something a Krabat only did if he won or died, so they shot Gustavus Adolphus dead,
and as the great King of Sweden died in the mud they rode off in into the thick fog....
Thus ended the life of the only Swedish king with the title "Great"...
This is the story that was told to me by my Paternal Grandmother who didn't like my mother very much since she is Croatian.
Fate plays such tricks on humanity it's not even funny....

At this time with the religious conflicts in Central Europe the protestants having fallen on hardships this prophecy came to be that a lion from the north would come and rescue the protestants steaming through Europe down to Rome and be rid of the catholics. There were sightings of cloud formations one looking like a lion fighting an eagle with the lion being victorious the eagle representing The Holy Roman emperor. When Gustavus chose to intervene and became so successful people really thought the prophecy had come true. So originally ir was superstition from the protestants before Gustavus even entered the war -- and one could say, he did save the protestants from annihilation so it did come true.

Was the protestant movement really worth to be saved ? It weakened the Christian Europe in a time when the Ottoman Empire was a big threat in the southeast of Europe. It was close that we would have been "liberated" from the quarrel between protestants and catholics for all times if the turks had prevailed. in this case we all would pray in the direction of Mekka today.
