Always went with a resounding "hell yes!", because they know it and i know it. But ofcourse no need to tell them exactly who i am interviewing for.

    "do you have other candidates?"

I think this is an effective strategy, but I really loathe the misdirection and adversarial vibe.
I’d much rather just say, “Yes, why do you ask?”
Curiosity can be weaponized quite effectively against friend and foe, and it’s an effective litmus test to determine which of the two you are dealing with.

Sometimes fewer words can be more effective @joshuahutt and I think your approach is a solid way to tease out their motivation - and also to test their level of their interest in asking the question. Ideally interviewers would never ask this question, and so negating the need for misdirection etc

@@rajsidhu it’s really tough, because sometimes you really need a job and feel pressured to just shrug off a bad question or an uncomfortable process. I’m not sure if that’s worth it or not, but I wouldn’t judge somebody for doing it.

I get that @joshuahutt. The process - and unfortunately some of the questions can be dehumanising. Interviewers are rarely created equal. Some have egos and get a power kick out of interviewing - I've felt it - while others can be incredibly kind and generous with their questions and their perspectives. Stick in there for the good ones (the ones that make the process comfortable) they are out there - and when they extend offers, they make great bosses.

Recently had a phone interview and this was asked. I told the HR recruiter "this was the 1st interview this month", figured I wasnt lying or embellishing the truth. Thanks for the insight behind this loaded question!

Nicely handled there, Ato... "loaded" is exactly the right word! Raj
