    One program that should not be on any pc is definitely McAfee Antivirus. Since it comes as pre-installed bloatware on the computers of several brands, many people just keep it (either for convenience as they don’t have to install an antivirus, or for fear of messing with what they believe is system software), but it should be removed immediately - it’s heavy, glitchy and awful at protection.

    • @LucienSabre
      @LucienSabre Před rokem +16

      @Willfa10 Precisely my point. McAfee is a sorry excuse for an antivirus and I honestly don't get why pc brands keep pre-installing it, that piece of crap should not installed even on the worst machines.

      @Willfa10 Yours was an old pc, but McAfee comes pre-installed and thus could let hackers on relatively (or even brand) new machines as well. That's why imo nobody should have it on the computer.

      First steps on a new PC:
      1) Disable Micro$oft’s recall-ware and NSA conduit, Auto-Update. A friend calls Auto-Update foul-ware, as it’s prone to foul up your PC.
      2) Remove pre-installed malware: McAffe, etc.
      3) Install other than IE or rebranded IE, Edge.

Therefore I have to have both MS Teams and Zoom installed, so I can talk to teachers in case I need help with something. In some weird cases, not very much, I guess very little much teachers use WhatsApp for online consultancy. I used driver booster for years. Did the job, kept me up to date with all my driver's, installed them without guys and was brilliant. Tonight, after installing new hardware, it insisted on being updated. Fair enough. It offered, for the first time ever, to also install other software. A VPN and a piece of screen capture garbage and I can't even recall what the third one was. I refused.
    It installed them anyway and refused to let me uninstall them. My anti virus started isolating files I hadn't given permission to install and clasding them as malware.
    I've spent hours so far manually deleting files associated with it and editing my registry.
    So; Driver Booster now a bad actor installing malware.

      what's wrong with it? Not much really. It takes forever and a day to load, and that's a pretty unforgiveable sin these days for most people, myself included. Alternatives? there aren't any depending on what you're using it for. Own an iOS device or bought music from the apple store? You're kind of stuck with it. everything with regards to full device backups, OS restorations, all of it is tied to iTunes. If you're just using it to as a media/podcast player, and nothing more though? There's no good reason to use it. Cpod and audacious cover both of those functions pretty well. I really only have iTunes because I have an iPad Air. I never launch it though because it does take forever to load the damn app. my guess is it starts up a bunch of services in the background first of questionable nature. also it doesn't respect windows themes, so all I get is that eye searing light theme. Dark mode just isn't a thing on windows for it. that's probably the greater sin in my book.

    • @WolvenSpectre
      @WolvenSpectre Před rokem +2

      The closest thing you need to a cleaner now is an uninstaller program that removes stuff left behind. You have to be a fair bit more tech savvy but in a worst case scenario most make you do a restore point to roll back in case something you removed was an issue.
      I recommend the free version of Revo Uninstaller. However don't use it on programs installed by package managers as that can cause issues for the package manager and learning how to fix it. Then again... restore points are your friend. Mostly do this for a clean uninstall so new installs are clean or to remove sensitive information or configurations that software may have had and would not delete on uninstall.
      But as TechGumbo said the Operating Systems are way more stable, the bugs in Windows 11 aside, than they were a few versions ago, and most of that management from defragging to registry management is better than most tools that are out there, and any advantages those tools do have are not noticeable in a modern machine.

      Last time I tried iTunes for Windows, it deemed _my entire media library_ as "pirated" and auto-deleted it from the entire system. Why? Because the files "didn't have iTunes metadata watermarks", which also describes self-created media files, and files legally purchased from a _different_ storefront (like purchasing soundtracks on Steam, for example). I will never trust Apple software on a non-Apple system EVER again, they do that on purpose to "convince" you to buy Apple hardware instead, which the macOS versions of Apple software lack such "glitches"...

    ... as far as zoom, did you differentiate between the installed package and just clicking on a link? Its tough to view a webinar thats on zoom and not use it. I can understand warning folks to not install the full package, but what is someone gonna do if the webinar you want to see is via zoom? Is it more a security potential like every other software package or is there a severe underdevelopment? I have had a poor experience with ciscos version, just saying.
    Winrar got a bad rap. Its not freeware so the popups are applicable until you buy it. I dont think its a "should not be" on your pc. Its a if you rather keep it, you should buy it. Remember they "are" rar.
    I ask that you try "Gadwin" screenshot utility. The free version does most of what anyone should want. It can even catch the "prntscreen" key to save screenshots. There is a small sliding menu available if you want to do more than just screenshot and it hides out of the way when you dont need it. First time I saw this feature in such a program.
