  • In this episode, Noel Salas goes to Oceanside, CA to revisit XTR Surfboards and get their breakdown on the various XTR10 Carbon Layups. In meeting with Shey Yates, Noel finds out what makes each Carbon Layup specific. Shey describes why you would choose the Carbon Lite over the Parallel Carbon and vice versa.
    XTR10 wood stringer provides a familiar feel that would be great on any fish-type or mid-length surfboard. On the other hand, the Stringerless Single Lite Carbon has much more carbon with the most traditional feel versus the Single Lite Carbon that Noel likes best. Shey states that the Single Lite Carbon layup has less flex compared to Carbon Lite and it offers a wider wave range without too much flex for bigger waves.
    Shey explains, “Generally speaking, you’ll want more flex for smaller waves and less flex for bigger waves. Flex generates drive, spring, and pop. XTR10 Carbon Layups are true to a poly feel but don’t tend to chatter in overhead surf like most other EPS/Epoxy builds.”
    Carbon Lite is the newest carbon tech by XTR10 and is totally customizable for the surfer’s expertise, weight, and wave. They first made it in Noel’s Red Tiger, which he totally loved and is Noel’s favorite construction.
    However, the Parallel Carbon is awesome for those surfers who need a little help getting into that next section and has a different feel and flex pattern - loading and unloading effect. Shay breaks down specifics that every surfer would want to know. Watch the full video to learn what would be the best custom XTR 10 lay up for you.

    Have 3 different boards from XTR in the past couple months. Shey is awesome and will help you get dialed in. From my own personal experience, I'd recommend getting carbon lite instead of wooden stringer. Have a red tiger that's been used quite a bit in CL, still bright white and barely any pressure dents on top. Feel wise, if PU and EPS had a baby it would be XTR. Rides 1L more than PU.

    Jamie O’Brien was ripping a sick board in the new Palm Springs wavepool. I believe the model was the stretch 5150 with a performance nose. Has an inverted channel in the tail and concave deck. Would love to see a review on that.

    I had a custom.XTR from XTR Oceanside in 2013 and is by far the lightest and most responsive surfboard tll this day. Javier and the boys have great customer relations and rapport with me ....... Highly recommended and if you go to their website the board prices are actually the best value in my opinion.

    Hey Noel great review as always . I know you are liking the xtr for all around feel and durability the boards and company look great . I also push decks down super fast , if I buy a new stock glassed 444 board Merrick or mayhem or pyzel and surf it regularly it’s pushed in badly within a few months .
    I have not ridden xtr but I have ridden varial glassed 646 which pressured then it seemed to stop pressuring after a while it seems to stay about the same pushed in like 60% of what a poly would be . FireWire helium is the only boards I’ve ridden that don’t push in and hardly have even dimples after a few months use. How would you compare the xtr to FireWire helium in terms or durability ?
    Also have you ridden any of the new FireWire volcanic boards ? These volcanic boards seem to be the same as helium on the deck they have the 3 layers glass but with basalt glass combo and more importantly the 1/8th high density composite skin which I think is what stops pressure dents .
    Seeing the FireWire doesn’t offer all their boards in helium I want to try the great white twin and sci fi 2 in the volcanic , I haven’t tried ibolic either yet.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I have not tried the Volcanic tech yet. I like the Firewire techs too… they are very durable from foot pressure dents.
      The XTR10 is pretty durable… it will push in a little…. Similar to Helium for me. One thing to remember about XTR10 is custom boards from the best board brands… you cannot get that in the Firewire techs. No custom dims or other brands.
      I like the feel of Varial will poly resin but the pressure dents were horrible on my boards… as bad as PU/Poly. The Varial with Epoxy resin was way more durable…. No real pressure dents but the foam did not load on my bottom turns. It surfed like a 2x4 (wood beam)

    Noel, I love the material tech reviews! How does this foam compare to the varial foam?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Varial foam is good too. It’s closed cell and excellent pop… a feeling of its own. I liked it with Poly resin best. I didn’t like the Varial foam with Epoxy resin though… it was too stiff.
      I personally like XTR foam better…. It’s way more durable on foot pressure dents and better flex options.

    Awesome content Noel! For choppy conditions, same board, same weight, more or less flex is recommended?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 6 měsíci +2

      In choppy waves I like a little more weight… especially if the waves are head high and bigger. If the board is for Head high plus then go a little stiffer in flex too

      @@surfnshowreviews7777 These boards are extremely bouncy and do not work well unless it is sheet glass. Any kind of wind or chop and these boards bounce around way too much. Also, if your board delaminates, good luck dealing with that...

      No sorry… I rode that board a bit on my hip recovery and since I got better I never really connected with that model. In the ocean it felt ok as a Quad but I could keep it from sliding out in my carves in the pool as a Quad. In the end… it was not my cup of tea.

    Maybe I'm confused but I feel when you ride different shapes board would have as much to do with loading up for the turns etc. as the carbon. Would love to see three identical boards with the three different carbons compared.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Před 6 měsíci +2

      That’s a good idea…. I can tell you that I surfed the Lost Stub Driver 3.0 for 2 hours in the pool… so that’s roughly 24 waves and it was stiff off the bottom and off the top too. I never got used to it. Im curious how it will go in the ocean. Maybe a little more wave face will give me time to load it through the turns.
