    Although ``SHOGUN'' itself is fiction, it is based on historical events and figures.
    After Oda Nobunaga, who ruled Japan during the "Sengoku" or wartime period, was assassinated by his vassal Akechi Mitsuhide, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, also a vassal of Nobunaga, defeated Mitsuhide and unified Japan, and the Toyotomi government was established in Osaka.
    After Hideyoshi's death, the Toyotomi government shifted to a political system supported by the Five Elders and Five Magistrates until his successor, Toyotomi Hideyori, reached the coming of age.
    Afterwards, internal conflicts arose as Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of the Five Elders, gained influence.
    In SHOGUN, Toranaga is obviously based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, Mariko is on Akechi Tamako or Hosokawa Gracia, daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide, and John Blackthorn is on William Adams or Miura Anjin, who served Ieyasu.

    I feel like this episode 8 is going to be interesting and perhaps a bit slower paced.Only because I’m thinking of how it should be a huge build up for the last two episodes. Im thinking, Toranaga may appear as if he is reconsidering his decisions after his sons death. Perhaps he acts as if he’s going to surrender. Which knowing toranaga it might as well be a part of a much bigger plan, that will lead to success. He’s a highly determined ,intelligent character, that I feel this only motivates him further in the grand scheme of things. I’m hoping that the show does depict the final battle. I think that would be a more fulfilling ending for viewers, than just showing the aftermath. Plus it would be cool to see a battle like that, let’s be real. Great Video!

      If they skim over the war, when after the end of every episode they hint at a war, I am literally going to break my tv. I've enjoyed the show so far but not showing Samurai do what Samurai's do best would be a disgrace.

    They will continue to deviate from the book, they have done it several times already, which is fine, the book is the framework to the story, it would have been boring to replicate the 1980 miniseries frame by frame. This version is more centered on the Japanese characters than the 1980 version, which makes it interesting to me, having read the book several times and watched the 1980 version several times as well.

    • @JeremyIceAndFire33
      @JeremyIceAndFire33  Před měsícem +1

      Yea i don't mind a deviation here & there, as long as it remains a compelling story. With them only having 10 episodes to adapt 1300+ pages, I figured they'd probably condense & even have to cut certain events out. But overall im definitely enjoying it & the really liking the emphasis the show puts on Japanese culture during the Sengoku Period.

    They skipped the whole part of Anjin almost committing suicide and how that really changed Yabu and Omi’s opinion of Anjin….. so it’s possible they could easily show Sekigahara, the 1980 version and the book didn’t, but as Rome and Game of Thrones established with CGI it’s now possible to have a battle with thousands of combatants.
    Personally I would prefer to see the battle so long as the screen play is good and they stick close to real history (since the book glossed over it).

    • @JeremyIceAndFire33

    Spoiler alert. I read the book decades ago. I remembered reading and reading and hoping for a “large battle scene” but the novel did not describe it. The climatic battle is just an after note at the end how many heads where taken and Osaka castle destroyed and the heir and his mother killed. I believe that the season will end without the large battle scene similar to the book. I cannot imagine how we can have a season 2 given that a popular character will be killed very soon and cannot re appear. 😂

    I've really enjoyed the show but for the love of god if they don't start throwing in some action within the next episode, it is in no way going to compare to game of thrones. I understand the character and world building, but literally the last 5 episodes have been all talk, then teasing a war at the end, only for it to be all talking the next episode. I understand it's based on the book but they've clearly made changes to adapt to the modern audience and there is more than enough dialogue they could've cut out to throw in at least a sword clash. The majority of people interested in Samurai history are mainly interested in them due to their superior martial arts and the fact these guys ate, slept, and breathed war. Yet we literally haven't even seen a glimpse of this. At this point I'm willing to bet the next episode will be all dialogue again , then maybe 5 minutes of action in the ninth episode, majority talking in the 10th episode and then the start of the war then it cuts and the war is over. I'm crossing my fingers this doesn't happen because this show has so much potential but I'm extremely doubtful at this point. The way it keeps building then amounts to nothing in the next episode has me feeling like this is how the entire series will play out. End of rant.

    • @JeremyIceAndFire33
      @JeremyIceAndFire33  Před měsícem

      Resources wouldn't have been a problem for the production seeing as they had well over a 250 million dollar budget for this season & over 150 extras on set. Even House of the Dragon s1 didn't cost that much to produce. But seeing as they skip over the Battle in the book im not expecting to see it in the show. But it's certainly not due to lack of resources.

    Spoiler-----
    I think Toranaga has already discussed Mariko giving herself up to be a prisoner to Ishibo. He knows Ishibo will kill her and that will lead to him losing favor, making it easier for Toranaga to have popular support. It also may be his way of giving Mariko what she wants since Christianity condemns suicide and her husband won’t unalive her.

    • @JeremyIceAndFire33
      @JeremyIceAndFire33  Před měsícem

      Hmmm very interesting point. Especially with the whole Catholic suicide sin as you mentioned. This could essentially kill 2 birds with one stone. Helping Toranaga while giving Mariko the end she wants.

    I think the casting choice of Jarvis was a mistake. He doesn't convey the feeling which the character is suppose to experience and his acting is not that different from scene to scene. He is often in the hunched posture, speaking in the range of monotone.
    I also think that the dacing scene (with Toranaga), seppuku attempt and even Blackthorne's learning Japanese were left out because the screenplay is taking the character into another trajectory. If this is the case, it would have been better leaving the character out of the story and focus on the Japanese characters in their personal motivations and the court intrigues.
    So far, my assessment is that if the Blackthorne's character was left out, the series would still be epic and an engrossing story without these blemishes.

    Kinda disappointed with the casting for Blackthorne. Very little chemistry with Mariko, too chubby and fresh faced looking and far too impolitic/ completely lacking in finesse. The outburst “you’re all dead” from last chapter was so ill fitting with the dynamic between the characters depicted in the book. It would have been impossible. Also sad they have not included the seppukku attempt.

    The new version is very, very different from the miniseries that was broadcast in 1980. The miniseries in 1980 followed the book almost to the letter, this one takes elements of the book and combines certain arcs making them more palatable for a streaming limited series which is usually 10-episodes. Therefore the two are different. Don't know if there will be a second season of Shogun, personally I think it should end with the 10th episode.

    I believe the show has to include "A" battle, though probably not the historic Sekigehara. The book, for all its excellence, really flubbed the ending, including skipping over the battle to the aftermath. Also the Blackthorne character as written in the book became more and more useless as an asset. There was never, as I recall, any reason to keep Blackthorne in Japan, even after Mariko's death, other than "karma". Anyway, I'm enjoying this series, though the Blackthorne seppuku incident would truly have added to an otherwise monotone character.

    • @steveday6671
      @steveday6671 Před měsícem

      you have missed the whole point of the end of the book then. Torenaga kept Blackthorne in Japan as a constant threat to the Portugese and because he saw Blackthorne as his FRIEND, one of the very few people he could trust not to plot against him as Shogun.

      There's definitely some fighting coming up. But a story like this is more of a character piece about political intrigue & the trappings of power, it relies more on good writing & good acting over cheap spectacle. Anyone can throw together a good fight scene but to create a compelling story like this with the depth these characters have is a different thing entirely. It’s a higher form of storytelling imo as opposed to the mindless action spectacle Hollywood keeps producing nowadays.
