  • The new series continues with Ruby's first trip to another planet and Steven Moffat's return trip to the show he used to run.
    Yes, one of Doctor Who's most celebrated writers returns as if it's the first RTD era again. But is it REALLY just like the first RTD era again?
    And is this possibly the best episode in years? Let's digest Boom!

    I was less charitably disposed towards Space Babies and The Devil's Chord than you, though none of what felt off *for my personal tastes* was down to Gatwa or Gibson. Boom, though, I really liked. The closest to a complaint I have is that the dead soldier's daughter seemed to be written either as younger than the actress playing her or else incredibly oblivious to the realities of the situation. But not so badly as to ruin the episode. The rest of the guest cast do a fine job, and the small cast allows space for our regulars to shine.

    Another great review, Chris! Your observations are always thoughtful and well-explained.
    I agree that it's the best episode so far.

    Yeah, this really was so good wasn't it? I think there's a lot of fun to be had from seeing Gatwa do this for the first time - he has a script that demands a lot of him and he rises to the challenge. And yeah, after several very frothy stories in a row, it's been nice to have one so grimly serious. I'm hoping that the rest of the series keeps switching things up

    This is my favourite of the season so far. I too prefer Moffat stories generally with a well plotted and tense story. I don’t feel that it ended easily. Like a chessmaster, Moffat put all his pieces hidden in plain sight to make it a satisfactory end. My least favourites so far have been Star Beast and Space Babies but even they get 7/10s. I am enjoying this new era and I agree Chuti and Millie the best TARDIS team since 11, Rory and Amy. Looking forward to your Bind reviews as well.

    Second comment: 17:50 I believe bottle episodes are largely restricted to one set. I don’t really think of Blink as a bottle episode in that regard but rather the fan-dubbed “Doctor Lite” episode. Heaven Sent and Midnight do appear to be Bottle episodes in that regard.

    Apologies in advance I tend to write long comments and this will probably be no different 😂
    Long time fan from Jon Pertwee era here (damn I feel old saying that 😂). Through good and bad episodes but never in my mind a bad Doctor. Do I have favourites hmm possibly but they usually reflect the age I was at the time. I like you actually didn't mind Chibnals Era. Was it let down by poor writing at times yes BUT look back at ANY era and you will find that.
    Ok background about my journey done.
    I personally loved this episode, it had me on the edge of my seat and involved so much in the story I forgot my son was going out with his carer and had to do a mad dash at the end to get him ready 😂
    Ncuti's performance in this cemented him as The Doctor and oh boy can that man express all emotions just on his face excellent acting. It also cemented Millie as a companion for me I thought her performance was also excellent. Now I have a slight advantage I think in that I have never seen any of them in any program before so they are entirely new to me (my home circumstances mean I don't get to watch tv etc unless it's Doctor Who then time is made). Verada Sethu was also excellent and I think like others in the past that's why she was invited back in a bigger role.
    Regarding the end part another CZcamsr I saw made me laugh and think when Ambulance aka Susan Twist aka Villenguard said they had permanently deleted him did they check the recycle bin 😂. As a Parent I enjoyed the fact that Parent love saved the day.
    Now was this the best Moffat has ever written no but damn it was different and it was very good and reminded me of why I actually liked his showrunner stint (he did burn out and over extend himself in the end tho).
    This for me just sneaks ahead of Wild Blue Yonder as my favourite episode so far but in fairness I have actually enjoyed every single episode even with their faults. Looking forward to 73 Yards and I think this is going to be a Doctor lite episode and allow Millie/Ruby to shine (hopefully).

    I think my 10 year old has watched too much bad Who: he got annoyed and started shouting at The Doctor to just use his sonic screwdriver on the mine 😂

    Whilst I really enjoyed boom, it is like being thrown into series 10. The previous 2 eps were so random, they threw me off guard, and I kinda admire them for that, to try something new even if it didn’t quite land for me. But I want more of that as it’s new, I mean the story direction not necessarily camp all the time.

    Ive personally really enjoyed Ncuti's run so far. Space babies was alright but the character work in the church of ruby road, 14x02 and 14x03 felt so **rewarding** after having stuck with the show for so long.
    Ive had certain issues as well with some of the execution, but in my eyes the good outweighs the bad by a landslide. Good review mate, hoping to see more.

    I liked it, which was nice considering my opinions on the Capaldi era where not flattering overall. A very tight and tense script with a bit of the macabre thrown in for good measure. My only complaint would be that I could see it being swapped to other TARDIS teams and still working fine so it doesn't feel very era specific to me.

    I think you’re being very generous saying that RTD and Moffat aren’t repeating themselves. This whole new era from the 60th specials onwards has felt like a pick’n’mix of familiar elements. Devil’s Chord is basically The Giggle all over again. He’s repeated himself within three episodes.

    • @chris_stokes
      @chris_stokes  Před měsícem +1

      The Devil's Chord repeating from The Giggle isn't repeating himself from his first era which is what I meant. I also point to the similarities between those 2 episodes in my Devil's Chord video, and I don't like either episode all that much. But while they're similar to each other, I still don't think the approach he's taking repeats that of his first era

    • @misterlp3110
      @misterlp3110 Před měsícem

      What do you mean repeating? Its meant to be a direct continuation, so its only natural that the feel of it is similar. This is what the overarching plot of the season is going to deal with. The legions of the toymaker

    • @chris_stokes
      @chris_stokes  Před měsícem

      @@misterlp3110 I mean his second era doesn't feel like his first - similarities between The Giggle and The Devil's Chord are obviously going to happen because of the arc. But that isn't what I mean by repeating himself - I mean that he isn't, in that his approach to his second era feels so different from his 2005-2010 era

    I enjoyed this much more on a second viewing. I was a bit annoyed at times with the writing of the little kid and the writing of the Doctor being dismissive of faith. But the end of the episode changed the perspective of those elements when you rewatch. I also agree that the situation did resolve itself a little too cleanly without much consequence.

    • @Mark-nh2hs
      @Mark-nh2hs Před měsícem

      I found it ironic that the Doctor dislike faith yet the Doctor in series 3 became Jesus like by using Martha to make the people of the world have faith in the Doctor - so cringe really disliked that part lol

    The biggest problem I've got with Ncuti's Doctor is that I've watched Sex Education and it is so hard to divorce him from that performance that it's distracting from my enjoyment of his portrayal of the Doctor.

      @@chris_stokes VPN or pirating. We can get bbc and watch it that way and if you have satellite tv like sky we can record it but not to my knowledge get it on catch up.
      Interestingly we did get the 60th anniversary episodes on RTÉ player (irish public broadcaster) a few weeks back but I couldn’t find any announcement of this so im unsure if itll be an ongoing thing and if it is what the frequency would be
