  • A man has died after falling into the River Tawe in South Wales as three major incidents have been declared.
    A multi-agency response has been triggered as rescuers battle to get to victims by helicopter and boat.
    Major incidents have also been declared in Hereford and Worcester.
    Storm Dennis has also meant the Environment Agency declared the highest number of flood warnings and alerts on a single day in England.

    In the old days, thousands of men were employed to clear rivers and ditches so that water flowed freely. Now all the ditches are overgrown, shallow and blocked with litter. Also, in the past it rained all the time.

    Many of these areas are built on former wetland, riparian land, marshland and peat.
    They act as natural sponges in times of heavy rainfall but now they've been concreted over.
    It is inevitable that flood waters will seek to flow there again.

      @Tim Webb hi, i remember working for WNBC News years ago and they hyped a coming vicious storm that never happened. so they acted as if it did happen. a tree limb in Brooklyn fell and nobody was hurt and they took credit saying the reporting kept people home and no one was hurt when the branch fell. this was done at the site of the stupid effing branch. they all do it....

      The environment agency are utterly useless. They knew the storm was coming. Local people should have easy quick access to the flood defences. They could and should be stored in local businesses so they can be put up in a few minutes. But they are probably stored in a council warehouse miles away somewhere.

      All the rivers and water tables etc was full because of Ciara. And that meant that Dennis had nowhere to go except flood.

    It's "wreak havoc", not "wreck havoc". Wreak means "to cause". Wreck means "to destroy". Havoc means "widespread destruction". If a storm could destroy widespread destruction, that would be a good thing.
