1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS Baldwin Motion

1. 1969 Dodge Super Bee 440 Six Pack
A "six-pack" (three two-barrel Holley carburetors) version of Dodge's 440 cu in (7.2 L) engine was added to the offering list mid-year rated at 390 bhp (395 PS; 291 kW) @ 4700 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft (664 N⋅m) @ 3600 rpm of torque. The option code for this was A12, which changed the 5th digit of the VIN to M. These special order 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bees are known as A12 M-code cars. The A12 package also equipped the cars with a Dana 60 axle with a 4:10 gear-ratio, heavy duty automatic transmission or a 4-speed manual, and a 'lift off' flat black scooped hood.
2. 1969 AMC Hurst SC/Rambler Scrambler
Five years after Pontiac invented the muscle car formula by wedging a huge engine into its smallest car, American Motors followed suit in a big way, shoehorning the 390-cubic-inch V-8 from its AMX performance flagship into the company's entry-level car, the Rambler (née Rambler American). The result was the fabled Hurst SC/Rambler.
3. 1969 Shelby GT500 427 SCJ Super Cobra Jet
For 1969, the 428 Super Cobra Jet added Ram Air induction, special pistons, a nodular-iron crank, beefier 427 "Le Mans" connecting rods and an external balancer
4. 1969 Baldwin Motion Chevrolet Camaro SS
Using a factory SS 396 Camaro as the starting point this Camaro was the recipient of many tasty Baldwin Motion upgrade options. This process began with shoehorning a LS-7 454 with correct block casting code of 3963512 under the hood. The LS-7 454 being fitted with desirable Winters Foundry aluminum heads and Winters Foundry dual plane aluminum intake manifold.
5. 1969 Yenko Chevy Nova
In creating the Yenko Nova S/C, Don Yenko and his team in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania were testing the Nova’s limits and the insurance companies’ patience.
6. 1969 Royal Pontiac GTO Bobcat
In the late 1950's Royal Pontiac in Royal Oak, Michigan began offering modifications for new cars enhancing performance. As attention on the small dealer grew with their racing efforts, upgrades and package offerings expanded. Royal Bobcat GTO's would command respect, and with the new tunnel port heads offered directly through Pontiac Motor Division, the word was on the streets.

The poncho is a monster - was there any doubt? Royal Pontiacs were the real deal with one of the smartest tuning packages out there. Combine that with the Ram Air 4 and you have a true gem.
I could tell just by the sound of it that the GTO hadher going on. Sounded mean as hell!
Those Royal Pontiacs are no joke.
One thing I love about these shootouts by year is checking out how the auto makers hopscotched each other with platform changes and body panel changes. Here in '69 it was the first year for the new, much larger Mustang design, though still on a ten year old Falcon platform, the GTO and Superbee in their second year showing how cutting-edge Pontiac's designers were, and finally the Camaro, Chevy's late entry on it's third and final year of generation 1 body design.
Just wanted to say cool, I followed you exactly, I was lucky enough to ride along with my brother in a rebuilt 69 scrambler. Just nice to watch.
Well I was watching "Dream Car Garage" back then but don't remember this episode, Thanks for letting us see it again.
Miss seeing Tom & Peter going at it.
The trailer for this was out in 2006 on CZcams and was due to be aired on December 6tth. But after 15 years of waiting I have seen it. Just wish it was on CZcams sooner
Thank you guys for posting this. I've waited over a decade to see this shootout, and it did not disappoint.
Man! ... at 09:00 he's full second granny shifting that B-M Camaro... prolly to keep it out of the 11's !!!
same here, I watched this video long time ago in an internet coffee and suddenly was ereased, I was in shock and I could never watch it again
It's good to "see" Tom again. Always had a good time with Tom. I remember teaching him Performance Driving at Shannonville back in the early '90s. He was always fun to be around. You are missed Tom.
He had such a quick wit!
Tom was great, definitely missed.
Old Pete's style working the clutch looks like he is foot-stomping at some hootenanny, or trying to kill roaches.
Lol
I owned a Ram 4 Judge and the times are legit. 13:1s at 105 all day long..
Back in 1991 my dad let me ring out his ram air 3 judge on the street at night and the strip, 3:90 4 spd, although the ram air 3 and street tires i could shift that car full throttle and pound 14.2-13.8 all day, couldnt come off the lines for shit but on the street it hooked up with no wheel spin, beat many cars with this judge but did lose to a 70 chevelle with an L78 by a fender

The yenko nova needs the traction bars that Baldwin put on the Camaro
Back in the late 60's, my neighbor bought a 'Judge' package GTO; it was green, same color as the goat in this roundup. I, of course, figured that they would have gotten a hemi or 427 vette or something. Now I know that they had the right info, and made the right choice. I'll always remember the T handle shifter in that car. His wife drove it at the track instead of him, and usually came home with the trophy. Ah, memories.
Chevy knew too... Torquey GTO's / 442's owned stoplight to stoplight... where more people saw them... took a full 1/4 mile for the overcammed Chevy's to get a fender ahead:

Awesome video, showcasing some awesome classics. I'm happy to see the poncho as top bandito
When I was a young man, back in the last millennium and year 1971- I bought a 1967 Pontiac firebird for $1,800 off a Pontiac GMC Cadillac.used car lot. The badge on the hood was 326, but I soon found out that it had a 400 ci, 325/330 horsepower engine with a TH 400 slush box..Watching those burnouts, oh yeah, my bird would do that without power breaking. And, I could beat anything I raced..Your Professionally thought out and selected muscle cars for the shootout, represented a good mix of the machines that roamed the streets back in the day.I was a 23 year old GI back then, and home from Vietnam . I'm 73 now but still enjoy going back to those days and times with the aid of these types of videos. Thank you for the memories.
Don’t get me wrong I like the new episodes but the older episodes are nostalgic. They are classics with Peter and Tom!
The GTO is my favorite car, ever.
Thank you for re-uploading many of the American Muscle Car episodes and clips. It was one of my favorite shows to watch with my dad when I was younger. And I really like the new content as well.
I’m happy the gto actually did good in this one. You hear so much lore about the ram air cars and the ram air IIIs never performed that well on here so having the ram air 4 clean house was epic
Those ram air cars always did great. It's no surprise to old school rodder's.
I was never really impressed with the RA III's, and I never encountered any RA IV's. The RA IV in this GTO is tuned perfectly - its really to bad the RA IV was not more widely available, because it shows great performance in this shootout.
I always see the RA III being compared, ans I was so happy to see a RAIV in this one. Woulda been cool to see a RA V conversion but this is perfect either way
Always liked that boxy styling of the AMC. Same reason I always preferred the look of the earlier Novas to this one.
Do you know the story of the IKA Torinos?
@@javierzorzoli3646 Yes, I do! Impressive.
not for me..those 2 looked boxy n boring... the best looking were by far the Baldwin Camaro n Shelby GT500!
Now i know why they used a RA III GTO in the other shootout. The RA IV sort of ran away with this one, LOL.
I busted them on that too. A Hemi car, an LS-6, and a Boss 429, against a RAIII. This car should've been in that episode.
Pretty lucky no one had one of the half dozen or so 428 ram air 5 GTO tucked away in a barn somewhere.
I loved all of them. I know it's not the most valuable one, but I would prefer cruising in the ScRambler, followed closely by the GTO.
Thank you very much for uploading this episode! I remember seeing it back in the day and was blown away. Well done!
The ram air IV gtos were always underrated but kicked ass on the streets. Father had one back in the day and don't remember it ever beaten.
They kicked ass on some tracks, too. Neighbor of mine bought one new, and they would take it to the track on weekends. Turned out his wife was quicker than he was, so she wound up being the one to drive. Usually came home with trophies. Hers was a 'Judge' model, only green.
I drove a '65 GTO convertible tripower 4 speed back in the day... I remember one day my high school Buddy saying: " I can't believe I've never seen you beaten, Punk!"...

Classic episode, watched when it came out many years ago now!!!!
One of my fav carshows from back in the Day. Loved Tom - so sorry to see when he passed.
Man, what a great episode! Thank you for the content and driving these baby's the way they were meant to be driven.
Really enjoyed this video! Thank you for doing this. Learned a lot about the history of these cars. Looking forward to your next video.
Wow, I didn't expect to ever see this in it's entirety! I saw the trailer on CZcams about 12 years ago, and after searching for months, I came up with nothing. Thanks so much for uploading.
Love this! Would have loved to have any one of these back in the day. But on a serious note, the fact that modern day performance cars stop from 60-0 in less than HALF the distance....😳
I really love the old screamers people were so innovative and still are. Just awesome to see.
My first car, I purchased in 1976, was a mint condition 1969 GTO Judge Ram Air IV. I remember that my uncle and I drove up to the guy that was selling it, and we both looked at each other, and said, this is the one. One the way, as I was diving her back home, I was overly cautious, actually downright intimidated by the power this machine had. I remember that I took the back way home, and there was a little import following me way too close, honking for the passing lane. I slowed down to about 45, and he pulled into the passing lane. I heard his little 6 cylinder doing all it could do, as his tranny shifted into passing gear. Instead of me dropping into 3rd, I simply floored the GTO, and as the secondaries kicked in, I looked over quickly, to see a frustrated import not being able to pass, and me pulling swiftly away. I'll never forget the look of disgust on the other drivers face, as he was completely unable to pass me. The amount of pure torque that engine had was really something. I really miss that car. Lots of great racing and memories.
I might add, Baldwin Motion cars did 11 seconds, It did'nt leave the shop until it did. A friend of my brother had one, The story goes, He drove the garbage trunk and one morning he saw the car. A 1969 Chevelle, purple with the white hood stripes. His wife came out and got in it, started the car and lifted the clutch and the car planted here foot on the gas pedal and it ripped out the driveway, arched into the driveway pillars and smashed into it as it spun to a stop. she got out ran into the house and screamed, YOUR SELLING THAT F-ING DEATH TRAP! The next week it came back from the auto shop and with a for sale sign on it. He stopped and bought it. That was the fasted car around. Again Baldwin Motion cars didn't leave the shop until they did 11 sec. times. The shop was on my Island years ago.
Well that one certainly didn’t run 11’s LMFAO!
@@505Tempest stock non did...

AWESOME _ I must have missed this episode!! Thanks for uploading!
The gt500 and scrambler did well for underdogs, being more factory options than “tuned”. The Shelbys of 1965 were more in line with this type of work. They even say ford pretty much built these later cars in the video.
My best friend in high school had a super cool Dad who would let us cruise his 69 GTO Judge Out had a Ram Air 4 engine and 4 speed man I loved that car.... he got it for graduation... lucky dog

I love most anything GM made back in the day. I had a GTO that I mostly bracket raced and a daily driver Corvette that was lots of fun. When people wanted to race my GTO I usually raced them with the Corvette first to see if they were worth firing up the old Pontiac. Many times I didn’t have to. The Corvette was a high 13 second car but it could beat better cars on the street because it hooked up so well. I’m talking about 1980 era.

I wasn't old quite enough to drive in 69' but remember this era like it was yesterday. Such a baddass time in history and to experience such a fascinating automotive street scene. I loved looking at those cars as the idled at stop lights sitting next to you.

Poncho for the win.
Been waiting 17 years to see this... Awesome shootout! :D
Dad had a ram air 4 judge with 4.33. Such a fast car. Little disappointed in the bee tests show they do better. This is a great show and keep it coming.
That pontiac slayed the competition! But now im wondering if a Buick GSX Stage 1 could've toppled the Bobcat...
Wonder how the weights compare between the two?
@@bw3506 i think the pontiac is about 300 lbs lighter, but hey, the GS Stage 1 in the ordinary muscle car shootout was faster than an AMX (700 lbs lighter) around the slalom..

@@douglasduham9749 - Took 7 years because GTO had a big headstart in mid size muscle......
I don't even remember how I stumbled upon the Baldwin Motion cars 20 years ago, if I saw it at a show or read it in a magazine, but I do remember they came in stage levels coined "Phase I, II, III, IV, etc". I didn't see them mention what Phase the Camaro was in this comparison. A Phase III and IV car was supposedly extremely fast of all of the tuner muscle.
The baldwin motion cars with the phase 1 option, just got jetting, and a tune, the phase 2 option, im not sure what else they added to the phase 1 option, but the phase 3 option was the package that would do 11 seconds in the 1/4 mile, with drag slicks and if driven by Nhra driver, and phase 4 was what ever you had the $ for, baldwin would do for you! The car in this shootout was the phase 1, with slicks, is capable of mid to high 12s.
That Rambler S/C is sharp!
Great vid. 67 and 70 owner in the day. Thank you for the great competition vid. Loved my Pontiacs.
The AMC should have been the Javelin SST 401 now that's a fast car I had one. Did great at Trans Am racing as well.

Too bad you couldn't get a Royal Pontiac with Ram Air V. That would have been the 'Holy Grail'.
Ya as a GM man mainly Chevy,GTO RAM AIR 5 THE BOSS ,ESP. A BALDWIN
The RAIV did not come with forged rods or crankshaft. It did come with forged pistons. Round port exhaust like the RAII, aluminum intake, 735 - 750 cfm Quadra Jet, cast iron headers, and the largest Pontiac camshaft at the time 308-320-113.5+1.5 LSA and .517" lift at both valves using 1.65 rockers.
I liked the GTO's I had back in the day. I sure miss those times!
Excellent and accurate specs. The only question is how did that GTO mile an hour at 106 with factory exhaust and that puny quadrajet ?? The Camaro had the hottest engine hands down because it was NOT as factory delivered. It had headers and aluminum intake AND aluminum heads and a 930 cfm 3 barrel Holley, the mile an hour difference between it and the Goat was too close to matter. That isn't correct.
Lots of mysteries that don't add up in this shootout.
@@crazyoilfieldmechanic3195 The Q-Jet has a 735 - 750 cfm rating. The RAIV came with cast iron headers. The GTO could run these times. The Rat motors should have done much better here, I agree.
@@crazyoilfieldmechanic3195 the GTO wasn't a factory Pontiac, it was fully modified by Royal, that's why it was so powerful. I'm surprised it wasn't a 428ci, since Royal would sell them that way in '68-'69 before the 455.
Funny in the 69 RamAir lV 400 only a 730-750 CFM Quadrajet. I parted out a rusted out 1976 T/A who’s OEM 400 had its original 800 CFM Quadrajet. It’s now been built up by Cliff Ruggles to 830+CFM and feeds my Butler/Murgic Racing 1969 406. My 3212 Lb 1964 Tempest runs 11.03 @ 121mph in the 1/4 currently. I still have a set of 340CFM CNC ported KRE heads with portmatched Northwind intake to put on and fiberglass hood, trunk lid & bumpers soon to install. I’m pretty sure it will be a 10Sec car after that, 😉.

Most of my cars are 4 speeds but now i will try the new Tremec 5 speed in my 1969 440 Cuda i am working on now.
The Pontiac was built to beat all these other guys...
The Tremec is a good tranny, but that 440 is going to have a lot more torque than the newer engines it has been mated to. A good clutch will be necessary.
I'm a Mopar guy but I think that the 426hemi in the b body car would have been more representative of a b body hot rod for 1969, but the 440 was a more common option
@@dinadaughtry8993 i agree with you. It was common because of price. But it will be hard to say .
wicked fun! well done too!
as great as they looked, they were that much fun to drive... today's cars are fine pieces of machinery, but they have no soul - The MUSCLE era automobiles HAD HEART & SOUL!!
Spot on!
Very cool. I never saw this episode.
Love the shootout!
this is cool! thanks!
Wide Track, Wins again !!
It would of been great if they could've included an Olds 442 or a Buick GS Stage 1. There was a reason why they called the Buick 455 the "Hemi Killer".
There is another episode where they ran both of those cars in the same test is this was
They already did it it’s like 2 clicks away lol
Never killed a hemi where we run the streets in northern va.
Street raced all the way thru the 80s nearly every weekend
But even 340 dusters and darts would run close or with street hemisphere because a police tire was the best you could get in the early days
Mopars ruled and Sox and martin proved it so can't be disputed
A 440 super bee was not the best Mopar had to offer should have run Mr norms 383 or 440 dart or demon
Goodbye competition
All these test where already done in the late 60s and early 70s at small towns and drag strips across America
I was there watching Sox and martin win so many times it wasn't funny
Dominant if it wasn't Ronnie it was 1 of many other mopars don't take my word for it
The leaf springs on the Nova looked like spaghetti during the burnout lol 😆
Needed Buick GNX rear suspension setup...
That guy driving is certainly no Ronnie Sox, Herb McCandless, or Bill "Grumpy' Jenkins shifting those cars. Looks like he was trying to yank the tranny through the floor of the car and stomp a hole in the floorboard with his left foot. I did love the selection of cars- all heavy hitters.
He was lifting his foot up two feet above the pedal then stomping the shit out of it 🙈
The 68 Hemi Darts and Barracuda STILL hold the records
Epic shootout! Would have been cool to have a RA IV TA on here for the superior handling, but since a Pontiac won anyway...
I waited 15 years for this. When I seen the 3 minute trailer in 2006, could not find it anywhere.
I was in CZcams searching and Searching , I even commented on the trailer. The other muscle shootout was on CZcams but very shocked not one person had this and uploaded.
Royal was very fast, Baldwin motion was it a phase 3? I heard there was no phase 1 and 2 but phase just sounded better.
Sixpack launched great but shocked about not pulling near top end but I guess the weight held it back.
Today a 2 litre Golf R with 320hp runs 12.2 seconds , who on earth would of foreseen that 50 years ago.
Burnout was a draw I agree, I the Royal Bobcat sounded awsome , Ram air 4 cars did sound great. I wanted the Mopar to win but never mind.
Great video 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
People essily could've seen it 40 years ago with the Omni GLH
Enjoyed............................. 👍👍👍
That Rambler is so gorgeous! HOT DAMN!
I was 17 in 1973. I had a ‘69 GTO, Windsor Blue black vinyl top and interior. 421HO motor Ram Air IV, 4 speed Muncie M22 Rock Crusher trans. It was tuned by Nunzi Romano “Mr Pontiac” of Nunzi’s Automotive in Brooklyn NY. I loved that car. Then I had a ‘69 Baldwin Motion Phase II Corvette built by Joel Rosen of Motion Performance. My last hot Rod was a ‘70 Chevelle SS454 LS6, 4 speed, cowl induction hood, Birch White with black vinyl top and hood stripes, also tuned by Motion Performance. They used Sunoco 260 gasoline. If I only knew then what these cars would be worth $$$ today…
How so little subs great videos 👍🏾
Super Cobra Jets were underpowered vs most other 400+ cubic inch big blocks
That Shelby is no different than any other 69 mustang 428 scj Shelby did nothing to the 69-70 cars they were built by ford and not super tuned like the other cars
I owned a '69 Mach 1 428 CJ 4 speed 3.50 posi, I was surprised at the Shelby in this episode. It was quicker than mine was stock, I had lots of 1st and 2nd gear tire spin at OCIR - but mine trapped 101.X mph almost 102 mph. With the Shelby's 3.91 gears I thought it should have done 103.x mph passes. There was no hp difference between the '69 Shelby and any other production 428 CJ/SCJ.
Yes, in '68 GT500 lost its 2nd 4 bbl. carb. and Shelby's influence was waning... in '69 GT500 lost its hotter camshaft... was considered a 16 second car... Shelby/race shop tuning on this one plus Super Cobra Jet engine got it into 14's... Summer of '69 Shelby parted from Ford... back in the day a neighbor had a GT500 and it seemed like a slug for the spec.s it had...
This was my favorite car since I seen it back in 1977 was only 10 years old but the looks and the power was unreal I like how he didn't change for the two years and that car has more horsepower than what advertised I would love to have this one at raceway park englishtown New Jersey 🔥🍟🍔🥇🧨🐕🦺🐀🦮
I think the 1969/1970 Shelby 500 for identical and they were both the best looking cars and 69 and 70 the 428 Cobra jet had good horsepower 335 but I think you had a lot more than that that's my favorite muscle car the hardcopter
65 was the best.
Now thats your real American Muscle run’n down that Strip! 💯🦅🇺🇸
Pontiac GTO is my favourite car Respect from the UK
TOM HNATIW was the real legend here !
What happened to the dr. Olds 442 cutlass
I'm a BBC bloke, but I've always had a soft spot for 66 to 70 GTOs, especially Green 69s. Another category you could list is anger, how angry does it sound? The Baldwin/Motion Camaro sounded plenty healthy, but it needed some slicks and ladder bars to step into the ring.
The Royal Pontiac GTO sounded like it took a deep breath, got up on the balls of it's feet and came out swinging.
All of the others sounded tired and flat. The Nova was clearly not sorted (as described). An L72 should sound crisp, not flat. The AMC, Dodge and Shelby all needed a decent exhaust to let them breathe.
Pete just karate kicking the clutch lol I was taught the complete opposite of that.
I haven't watched this yet so I want to place my wager beforehand on the Yenko Nova.
You didn't come back to pay us off...
Of course... Torquey GTO's owned stoplight to stoplight... where more people saw them... took a full 1/4 mile for the overcammed Chevy's to get a fender ahead:

Just like always torque gets it moving and horsepower keeps it moving
Wow《☆》The GTO is a Beast. Let Nick's Gararage ave a look at the throttle linkage on the SuperBee⛾He likes to mount a camera next to the engine to verify all SIX barrels🤳are opening when they should◇¿.😎🎱☮🔊🖖👍
It was 12 years ago.
This originally was 2009 when this episode came out.
The big guy died in 2012 Tom Hnatiw
Dodge front end didn't like that 50 MPH headwind... GTO didn't mind it...
Nice bang shifting.
The Chevy Impala/Biscanye was a good model too, but very heavy
