My first truck I bought was a 2012 386 Peterbilt with a Paccar engine. Paid $56k for the truck with 500k miles on it. Probably spent over $30k in the first 4 years of owning it, most of it on emission bs. What a freaking nightmare! Eventually had to get it deleted. Now it sits in a junkyard. I bought a 2000 Freightliner with a 6nz. Much happier with this one. Runs and pulls much better. Plus parts are much cheaper. This guy is a mechanic. He makes money when your truck is in the shop, not on the road. Go buy a pre emission truck and rebuild it if needed. You'll be better off and have more money in your pocket.
I went through the same thing. Had a 2010 Cascadia nothing but problems even though it was already cleaned out prior. The plastics just don’t hold up. Now I got a old Classic XL 12.7 and love it so much. It has never let me down on the road and the few times something went wrong I was able to limp it to a shop. That’s the last truck I’ll ever buy.
He did say 2015 and up. So that’s why you had a POS.
It seems like the truck manufacturers got their shit together after 2015. I would imagine there would be a multitude of emissions problems when the first models started rolling out of the factories at that time peroid.
I own 2 trucks an 06 W9 with a CAT and a 2019 T680, the T680 I've had for a couple of months so far seems great. Bought it with 408k on it, it currently has 425k, bought it for 92k with a 400k warranty on the entire def system, engine, transmission, and differentials. So I have warranty out to 900k miles, I'm not too worried about it. I will say it is not smart to buy a post emissions truck as YOUR ONLY truck, if my T680 goes down ill be running my W9.

I'm still running 38 of the Original 50 1986 Pete 359's my Dad Custom Ordered in 1985. Each of the 38 are Fully Mechanical and been Maintained to Pristine Condition, Mechanical and Appearance. Each have over 5 Million miles. Proper Maintaining will keep them going.

I have a 93 FLD 120 with 243,000 original miles. It was a farm truck until I purchased it. No rust got if for less than 10k. My biggest expenses were because of dry rotted item’s.
Omg man please spray that truck with fluid film every few months. If you spend a few bucks now to keep it rust free it will be worth a ton of money someday.

As usual, you're exactly right. I've done it both ways, pre and post emissions. I run an old 98 international with an N14. It's pretty beat, 2.5m miles, a lot of leaks, and a lot of rust. But it's solid and I fix it myself, having a mechanical background as well. Got out of a 2018 cummins X15, that was a nightmare, constant wiring and derate issues, dumped it at 498k miles, bought my current old girl for 18k, put another 10k into it doing the work myself and I feel like this truck will still be on the road long after the '18 is in the junkyard. Oh yeah, screw that dealer that only does hood trucks in sandusky area.

The company truck I drive is a 2020 t680 with a PACCAR engine and I've been derated 3 times in the last year requiring me to find an authorized service place and just recently being towed over 2 hours to the nearest one. Im afraid of buying a new truck now because of this and thought going pre emission will protect me but I have no mechanic experience. Is it worth it to buy an older truck and put an extra 10 grand or even rebuild an old engine if you don't have to deal with the emissions nonsense? I drive in Canada so all the salt is probably not good for the extra electrical components in new engines
@@Josiah_Harder You should consider a glider. They were built thru 2020 model year with pre-emission Detroit 60 and Cummins n14 engines. They'll be hard to find right now but it might still be your best route to a low mileage pre-emission truck. But you do need to know gliders before shopping for one though, because all glider engines are rebuilt, and some rebuilds are better than others. Some rebuilds were done by the factory and others by Farmer Bob with his Backyard Backhoe in his brother Darryl's 150 year old barn, but luckily Bob is pretty sure he put most of the parts back in.
If you're buying and fixing an older truck, you'll want to pay attention to the condition of the chassis. A well-rebuilt engine will be like new, but the body will still have a million miles on it.

I believe also the newer trucks have a hard time maintaining the power over the miles. The older ones were much more reliable.

I got my first and still driving it truck for free and it's an old 1992 Ford aeromax with 500,000 miles on it with a Cummins 782 and a 9 speed Rockwell tyranny. Good enough for over the road.

Truck has already had to have part of the DPF system replaced, and has had to have a couple forced regens.
Last truck i was on, a 21 cascadia, this issue+a wiring harness issue. Went down for 2 months.
Definitely gonna be buying pre emissions when i get out from underneath this next year.

I have an 05 379 love it! I run Calf never had a problem. I have a C15 with a out of frame rebuild new 13 speed transmission and a new clutch came with 4 year unlimited mile warranty. My last truck was a 2017 Kenworth and it was junk nothing but problems! I personally will not buy another emission truck again.

I’ve got a couple friends who bought new both went bk after trucks were in shop more than thay were on the road I’ve got a 379 2003 pre with a single turbo 6nz I’ve owned it for 14 years and it occasionally has a problem but my repair costs average
Around 5000 a year that’s not including tires I do preventive maintenance I roll new bearings in it every 400000 miles change oil every 10000 miles the truck is the most reliable money maker I’ve ever owned

Pre. The trucking companies I know bought brand new post admissions trucks and took them back almost immediately.
Miles don't mean anything on a truck. Everything can be replaced and engines can either be rebuilt or replaced. Not only are old trucks more reliable but even if you have to replace everything own the truck. It's still cheaper than buying a 150000 dollar truck that you will still have to spend money on and good luck getting to figure out what's wrong with it and parts are way more expensive for newer trucks IF you can even get them. Old school for life!!!
Agreed with the miles don’t mean anything, I would suggest to find out the true information about the truck. Such as the mileage from the rebuilt engine.
Pre emission is up to 2002. 2003 and later are engines with EGR. Which make them an emission engine.
When people talk about issues with emissions engines, they're usually talking about the DPF system on the newer trucks, I haven't heard anyone talk about EGR having issues.
The EGR coolers give issues, but it's not really considered a full emission truck. Though it recirculates the exhaust gases back into the engine @jacksonwhittier3646
@jerseycowboy1 EGR was considered full emission at the time. EGR had all kinds of issues when they first came out. The coolers leaked, turbo actuators failed. All that still applies today.

For disclosure, my father used to be a trucker himself. From what I've heard, the 2017 & newer emission trucks are far more "reliable" than those before it. Have you had the same experience with trucks that have come across your shop?

You have to take into consideration all the breakdowns. they will cost you at least a day in pay, and that's if you can get the part and replace it yourself and the money spent on stupid sensors. NOX sensor for my old 2350 were between $500 and $1000. If you don't know what your doing it can get very pricey quick when dealing with shops out on the road. It could cost you thousands for a stupid sensor and days lost.
I had a nox sensor go out on me, wasn't throwing a direct code, just a derate warning, so I had it in the shop 3 days waiting for them to have the time to figure It out. With days lost on work and the price of the shop I figured I lost about 6 to 7 grand on a fking sensor...fk theses new trucks. I now own a 2000 379 with a 6nz. When I open the hood and see the lack of BS a it warms my heart. I run heavy so fuel mileage never changed much for me anyways

My 97 Pete 378, insanely easy to work on… my 15 freightshaker cascadia, almost impossible to do work yourself because of how technical every part is and getting to it if u don’t have specialty tools

I have the 200, it works well. But I think the 250 might have more features. If price is an issue, 200 is just fine.

I would stay away from Mercedes-Benz engines.

Those fleets get rid of emissions truck at 300k 400k for a reason. I’d stay clear if your owner operator. They’ll break you unless you know how to work on it and have the software. These mega fleets will run them 100k with between oil changes. Run away if you can’t buy a new one.
I know Justin with Flint Creek transport on CZcams is a big fan of pre emission trucks they do have some emissions trucks but the majority of the trucks they use is pre emission

It's not that difficult to find someone to service post emissions trucks with deleted DEFs here in California. I've heard many people say that their trucks with deleted DEFs have almost no problems compared to their trucks with all the emissions shenanigans. The dealership might not want to service your truck if you have deleted emissions but after your warranty is up who really cares about getting it serviced there anyway?
I've bought 3 early to mid 2000s trucks in the past 7 years with over a million miles but "well maintained" A long hood Pete with a Cat, Freightliner Columbia Detroit and Mack Vision E7. They were all worn out junk. I will never buy another truck with over 500,000 again. Lesson learned. I got into a new Kw T880 and never looked back. I still have the Columbia, but it just pulls a camper now.

Hello I bought a 2011 freightliner Cascadia that has a the last 2010 motor that doesn't have def just an egr. Is there anything special I could to keep it running good it has 705000 miles put 20000 miles on it since I bought it

The only thing you didn’t mention were glider kits - best of both worlds - pre emissions engines in newer trucks.
Just add more zero's!!! They're not making them anymore and the market on those is even crazier!! You could replace the emissions equipment on a new truck three times for the extra you're going to pay for a glider...

@@sturgelltruckingllc4074 but while you’re in the shop replacing those emissions systems 3 times, the glider is up and running and producing revenue. Comparing what a new emissions truck cost now, if you can find one, apples to apples, the glider is a better buy. Cheaper to work on when they do go down, and a whole lot more reliable.
Ryan can do it in a day, you won't be down that long, heck you won't even be able to get your 34-hour reset in..... just saying, but if you want a glider and you have $200K + in your pocket, by all means go get one
@@sturgelltruckingllc4074 A - you’re making the assumption that when that emissions truck goes down, it’ll be at a shop. One that is as competent as Ryan. B - they’re not making anymore pre emissions trucks either. But for me, if I was in the market for a truck and I’m spending 150-180K, I’m buying the glider. Hands down. Emissions trucks that were 50K 2 yrs ago are now going for twice that. Rode hard and put away wet. Not everybody has 10K to replace a one box. Then inframe a motor because you’re not going to get a million miles out of that emissions motor like you can a glider.
Great vedeo mate 👍 on my experience and my opinion I have older trucks and new trucks and the really true is ALL trucks after 99 or 2000 they have much electronics sensors and stuffs they are more economic engine's but not have a same fiability like the oldest trucks of course 🤔 but year after year if you buying a new truck with a last generation of the engine's in 5years you not save money just moved money because on this 5years you stuck in workshop many times, no makes money, loses good trips, mostly of the time you lose a company who work because the truck stuck many hours and have much troubles!etc... (my example: in case when i driving a older truck pet 379 98model with a CAT engine 3408 right now over 3.770.000kms!! without rebuilding in same trip like a new truck new engine low emissions, egr,adblue, particle filter,etc... fucking sensors, fucking electronics 😝 if not broken down I save much money on new truck of course 👏👏 but around the year after a year it's a bad idea buying a new truck!! I prefer dispend a little bit more on fuel but I making more money and I don't have problems with the work company's the truck going anywhere and back and making money if we making a correct maintenance on the trucks 1000% sure the best trucks are a oldest fucking ALL the news trucks no matter what model or make 👎👎 the problem is a political rules bolshits contamination!🤔 it's a fucking business 😤 stolen money from transportation companies for making gunes and etc... for makes wars!!! not offense fellas but on this moment it's not a good idea buying a truck if you don't understand how fixing your truck do not buying a truck! I have 97 western star 4900 with cat 3406e been a great truck for the 17,800 I paid fir it. I also have a 97 international eagle 9400i with 12.7 Detroit got it for 7,800. You absolutely can make more money with an older affordable truck. Just check the engine tranny and wiring thoroughly. Even if you replace all brakes, airbags, shocks, bearings and seals,, paint frame, and tires you still only have to put about 10 grand into it and you own it outright. Additionally, that pre emissions mfr will be more reliable and outlive all these new trucks. A rebuild on any of my trucks is only 10-15 grand. My turbos new are about 1 grand. New vg turbos on the isx or Detroit are at least 5 grand and unreliable. Ever sat next to a modern truck doing a regen? It's extremely toxic 🤮
Hello what you think about 2015 FREIGHTLINER glider with engine 60 with 700k miles?
Not bad from the spec. Still need to look into the truck itself for additional work needed to be done, such as leaking from seals etc.
Not really a good advice. You’re guiding people to get emission trucks and have them get into more issues. Please don’t listen get ya self a pre emission truck and maintain it run it for years to come make money and avoid headaches!!
What are your thoughts on buying a new truck roller and putting an older fully overhauled engine like a 12.7 in it? Trying to enter truck world and become an owner op while maintaining my own truck. I have the shop space, tools to do it I just don’t know the legalities compared to swapping engines in cars, is swapping a truck frame or buying a 2018-2022 to swap with a different engine accepted, or will you get chewed out in different states? Do you know if new chassis on trucks use vin coded modules so there is no easy retrofitting of old engines to new hardware anymore? That’s how cars are nowadays.
I’m pretty sure that’s illegal now with all the emission laws stuff.. if anyone inspects you’d be screwed…

Probably better then the ISX 15. I have a 2004 387 Peterbilt on an ISX with a EGR. Don’t know if we could consider that Pre- emissions?? No problems with that at all. Only problem I had was after the 600k miles I wasn’t paying to much attention on my oil changes you will ruin those engines if you don’t do the PM every 10 to 12k. A friend of mine went with the same engine for more then 1.7 million with 0 issues.
Most companies will not lease on that old of a truck , mostly 5 years old or newer

Not only emissions on newer trucks but air disc brakes are a royal pain. Pull a rotor guess what? You're doing a wheel seal too.
I would never go emission to much downtime in the shop not enough power not reliable and new trucks are over priced as well. Get you a pre emission engine build it if necessary everything breaks if it's man made but with the new engines it's all this technical crap guarantee that pre emissions give you a problem 9 out of 10 it's something simple I like something I can work on myself or my mechanic and stay far away from those 200 dollar an hour dealership

9 mpg is super.
My buddy truck gets 8 mpg only problem is it’s been in the shop for 4 months with all types of issues.
I'll take higher fuel consumption and peace of mind maintenance-wise over 7-9mpg but always in the shop for emissions issues ANY DAY!
@@Britcarjunkie None of them get 9 mpg! unless they are running Fl with pillows in the trailer!..i run WV vs newer day cabs, and lol 9 mpg all of a sudden turns into 6 mpg
@@Dubya9W9 Many of them are sub 5mpg once they're at 70mph: my C-15 gets 6.5mpg all day long at 75mph, and I have no emissions garbage to break down on my every few months.

Yes you can run a pre- emissions truck in california but there are state stipulations you need to look into, there is a lot of misinformation about California.

I haven't seen a "pre-emission" truck sit in the shop for over a month for sensor & parts shortage...I'll stay pre-emission as longs as I can. Brand new trucks are well over $200K & fuel approaching $6/gal. No thanks!
I agree pre emission truck has less repairs. But some of them has a lot worse fuel efficiency. With fuel getting so expensive, you will easily see that your fuel cost with pre emission trucks are $30,000 more than the newer trucks. It can easily offset the repair cost. Just a point, no disagreement

My 99 W900 has actual mileage just less than 1 million 400 thousand on it. Bought it am completely rebuilding it. It is my last truck. She is bad to the bone.
The new model hog pee trucks have way to many problems constantly and that is why they can’t get the parts a lot of the time because out of stock.
The Truck market and the sign of the times is the weaker dollar. Our dollar is worth less therefore our trucks are going up in price.
Yes, this is part of the reason everything is more expensive. For the old pre emission truckers, they are more expensive due to the demand.

Ohio truck sales buys older trucks, does minor repairs and will sometimes throw a paint job on a truck. They all seemed to have new front bumpers and stacks. Then there going to tack on an extra 40k on the price tag when it hits the lot. So if you can get financing, you're better off finding a used truck from someone getting out of the business.
I went to ots for a day and looked at over 100 trucks. Just about every one was ragged out. I wanted a eld exempt truck so that made it even harder to find. They sure look nice in their pictures on the website, but once you show up and start crawling around them, it turned into a big nope for me
All a moot point if you travel to California. As of next yeas 2023, you won't be allowed into California if you truck is older than 2010.
