  • Edge of Tomorrow is one of the best movies of the year. It's funny, clever, action-packed, and full of confusing alien/time-travel stuff. It also has sins, like any movie, so... you know how we do.
    Snackage: naturebox.com/cinemasins
Tomorrow: A new "How To Make" video from Bobby.
Thursday: Sins of a "modern cult classic."
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins do YOU want to see recounted?

DKhisa Loving a movie is also being able to see plot holes and being objective about it. That's what makes CinemaSins interesting.
For instance, i'm pretty sure that Terminator and T2 are awesome movies for Jeremy and Chris (assuming they have almost the same age as me) because they represent some kind of turning point in movies history, but still... they took time to make a sin video about it.

Okay so the omega is a single, time controlling entity. The Alpha's are the extension of itself, and mimics are it's army. Alpha dies, the omega resets the day.
So when the Alpha's blood gets on cage, the Omega reads that entity (cage) as another Alpha, therefore when he dies with the Alphas blood inside of him, he retains his life and is sent back to the previous day. So this means that when the Omega's blood gets on him, he BECAME an Omega a moment before death in the same fashion that he became an Alpha (blood combining with his), and then when the Alpha died (after he became the Omega), HE reset the day. This is why he was still alive and the Omega wasn't, because he became an Omega via the now dead Omega's blood, and so for a split second before he also died, the Alpha died and so he reset the day as the sole survivor.
However the real Omega is now dead so mimics can no longer exist because cage isn't powerful enough to power/control them all, so even if cage is an "Omega" till the end of time, without an Alpha that's bound to his Omega blood, time can no longer be reset by him because there's no Alpha's to die.
Edit: reformatted and clarified since people are commenting on this again lol
edit 2: I just realized, what if cage remains as an omega forever and therefore any kids he has become "alphas" and any kids they have essentially become mimics? what if one of his kids dies, could he reset the day?

Kind of. The time resetter for the aliens is actually only one active Alpha. An Alpha is actually a mobile extension of an Omega's conscience. There can be several Alphas in a given moment, but only one has the "power" to trigger a loop. When that Alpha dies, it triggers a loop, killing the Omega and resetting time automatically to some 12 hours before with the knowledge of what went wrong so next time around it can try something different to win the scenario where the Alpha just got killed.
Once Cage acquired the power he "contaminated" the system, turning into the alpha himself. And remember the Omega can have only one active time-resetting alpha at a given time - as long as an human has the power, the human gets to remember what happened the previous 12 hours, but the Omega doesn't, and the Omega doesn't have any way to reset time. Only one alpha can trigger a loop, and as long as the human is the alpha, the loop only works for him.
The Omega obviously realizes he's lost control over the time loop sooner or later ,and then is where the visions begin, their object being to attract the "human alpha" to a trap, to make him bleed out and lose the power, which is then reverted to an alpha which becomes the active one. That's why they didn't kill Cage in the Dam. they injured him so he'd bleed out so the Omega could have the time reversion power back. It failed though (Cage drowned himself before bleeding out and losing the power)
BTW the reason they didn't tried the "alpha tracer" in the movie before (seen as a "sin" when it's not) is because they thought they didn't need it at all because the visions would give away where the Omega was. Once Cage realized it was only a trap (by narrowly escaping it himself), then they realized that they had to use the "tracer" as it was the only way to find the true Omega whereabouts.
Another part of the puzzle is that what's travelled back in time is conscience, not the actual phisical form. When an alpha dies, the omega dies as a result aswell, starting the loop. But that's the important part. The alpha DIES, Omega as a result RESETS. If the Omega dies first, then as a result the Alpha dies too...but the loop trigger is always begun by the alpha. So if the alpha dies AFTER the omega, it triggers a loop, but the omega is already dead so what loops back is a dead omega.
And that's why the Omega dies even after the loop. Once the Omega died, THEN the Alpha died. At that moment the time resetting power was back to the aliens because of Cage's blood trasnfer. Once the Alpha died, the loop automatically begins, causing a 12 hour loop for the Omega. But the Omega was already dead. What was transferred back in time was a dead conscience, hence when the loop was completed, the Omega automatically died as a result.
After both Omega and Alpha were dead Cage gets contaminated by Omega blood, so he regains his loop-back ability just before he dies. The Alpha has already died...so be becomes the only one Alpha active again. And so when he dies he triggers his own loop and wakes up in a world where the Omega has already died just before he's been looped back. Boom, war's over.
It's actually a bit evolved and complex but it makes sense and pieces fall in very well.

This might be me reaching a little, but here goes:
The caravan park is intended to be Normandy IIRC, which is way in the North of France, opposite the South of England. When they're driving along through the French countryside Cage is trying to get Vrataski to talk, which would suggest there's been a decent period of silence, which would in turn suggest a fair distance traveled at motorway speeds. He says that she mentioned something to him just outside of Lyon, which would suggest in past repeated days they make it at least to there, which is a good 700km south. Not only that, but the house they happen upon and find the helicopter at is shown to have snow-capped mountains in the background, which would suggest they're relatively far south, nearer the Alps. If you remember, the dam that Cage saw the Omega to be hiding in was in Switzerland or Germany, which would suggest that they drove most of the way there. Cage flies the little helicopter the rest of the way to Switzerland/Germany, which I believe to be something like a Sikorsky S-300, which (even if fully fuelled) would only have a range of 300km or so, meaning that they must have driven to basically the border of France and Switzerland for Cage to have been able to make it in that tiny helicopter. That means the car would have driven them a good 700 kilometres, if not more. Can't blame it for running out of fuel!
(Though I'm probably reading far too deep into it)

    • @joshuakilford9949
      @joshuakilford9949 Před 8 lety +27

+BooRadleyTube Also I believe them to be driving a (presumably) 2008-ish Renault Espace, which has a tank capacity of 18 gallons, and will achieve 45mpg motorway. This would give them about 800 miles at a full tank, which is more than enough to get them far south!

1 more sin: Rita doesn't immediately shoot Cage in the head once he knows where the Omega is. There's no reason for them to risk escaping when he has the knowledge he needs and can easily share it with her when the day restarts. Good job, except for 2 things:
    1. Sleeping in a chopper. OK, he's not a seasoned combatant at this point but he is the army's spokesman. It's very likely that he often travels (for instance, to give speeches or film various military bases) and of course he'd travel in army vehicles, not private jets or limousines. So there is no reason he wouldn't be used to noise and unsteady motion enough to sleep through a flight.
    2. The ending makes perfect sense. The guy died in the morning, mere minutes after the invasion and was thrown back by roughly 24 hours so he had almost 24 hours to kill the Omega, which resulted in an explosion at dawn - an hour or so before his original death. Then, he gets thrown back by roughly 24 hours too, right to the chopper flight which probably happened an hour or so before he was arrested and tased (he landed, went straight to general's office, they had a short convo and he was tased immediately which could render him unconscious for a couple of minutes maximum, so there is only a small difference between the time of his original death+ the usual return and the time of his final death+final return.
Since it's said that Omega resetting the day is an instinctive reaction, not a conscious decision, he may have acted on his instincts to manipulate time in such a way that he wakes up in a reality he hopes to see.
The only thing that could bother you is why he had the conversation with his general so early in the morning and why the sky is darker during the explosion but it's already morning when he flies the chopper. But hey, nobody says Omega's circadian sense was super precise.

But, the movie reveals that she had repeated that day. A lot. So everyone else thinks the technology is easy and deadly to use because in one day, a newbie destroyed the aliens, but really, Rita only knew how to best wield the suit because she used it over and over again. The army is going to get slaughtered using the exoskeletons, because it isn't the silver bullet they think it is!

Very big plot fail that Cinemasins failed to point out is that cage didn't have to lose the power at all...he lost because after he got the omega device thingy with the general, they left the building, got into a car, were chased, crashed, captured, passed out and received transfusion....but he didn't have to leave the general's room at all. could've used the device while in there, whilst Rita points the gun at the general, finds out where the omega is, and then rita shoots him, he resets the day and they go there. that would evidently circumvent those major stretches where cage doesn't die when he logically should've when going for the omega without the resetting power.

I'm not sure it is a fairy tale ending. It's not really clear what happened at the end. Seems to me like the omega somehow used Cage to reset the day in order to prevent itself from dying. Cage would remember everything so it needs to try and deceive Cage into believing he won which is why it seems like a fairy tale ending. May all be a deception. Stage is set for a sequel.

I've watched the movie so many times I've lost count. It's a great movie, but they could have shaved 30 minutes off it if Cage popped the transmitter in the General's office, and reset to get to the Omega without the Crew. Just Rita and Cage. Then THEIR ending scenes stay intact without all the wasteful battle scenes in Paris, and they get the same ending, with the great final smile, and WAY more box office receipts with a 1+30 movie

The light novels gives a great explanation of that, I think in the Full Metal Bitch chapter. When a mimic force resets enough to realize they are outclassed, they take minimal losses and retreats, then regroups to attack again with an overkill force to ensure victory. Most likely, they experienced enough outcomes to realize that they'd have no choice but to take the hit and regroup, leading to the beach ambush

He becomes the omega which allows him to rewind time, but since he is the only omega, there is no other one out there, just like when he kills that alpha and becomes that alpha he takes its place and you never again see it on the battlefield.

She wants to win, and for things to go back to "normal", so that she doesn't have to remember the thousands of times she's watched her love ones die over and over again. I don't know if I'm wrong here but in the movie it is said that the Omega uses the same technique as Cage: every time something goes wrong, the Omega resets the day, but remembers what has to be done differently the next time. Since the aliens are all linked up, I think the death of an Alpha is the important trigger to reset the day, as the "grunt" aliens aren't worth saving.
Also, as far as I understood, both "infections" with alpha blood were accidental. When the girl got infected, the Omega let the humans win the battle so the girl wouldn't die anymore and lose her powers (she even says this herself). Infecting Cage is also accidental, pretty much proven by the fact the he outsmarts the Omega and kills it in the end.
As I said, I might be wrong here, but I think these are good enough explanations against two of your sins. Otherwise, great video as always! :)
    Have a nice day!

      @sprinkle61 Před 8 lety

+hmong_champion vaj The movie shows that he (Cage) can sense that he lost the ability instinctively, as it was happening, so we are left to assume that she knew she lost the ability the same way, and since she woke up in a hospital after winning the battle (but not the war), there was no urgent reason to try to activate the ability by killing herself, or something attacking her to kill her, to test if she lost it. She also had the device to connect to the Omega mentally, so that device can be used to test the ability without having to kill her.

My personal theory is at the end when Cage “can’t die” is that he actually fakes it and still has the power, which is why in several scenes where he should have died, there’s a cut and he’s magically living. Similar to how before, his deaths weren’t really showed, but it just showed a cut of him the next day continuing and living. The reason he would have faked it is because nothing else was working and he wanted to try something new, and if it didn’t work no one would know, and he could try something else instead. God I love this movie, it’s so underrated.

  • @Silmerano

If you watch after killing the Omega the blood of the Alpha and the Omega swirl together around Cage as he is dieing. I think what this suggests is that time is being reset because an Alpha died, but Cage is taking the place of the Omega after the reset like he did with the Alpha. Which in turn is what causes all the mimics to die.

    4) originally the mimics never had an alpha and omega, this is something Hollywood just put it in for absolutely no reason
    5) original ending had cage and vita try to kill each other with cage killing her

    (1) Omega resides outside the traditional timeline; or it has it’s own timeline, so when time is reset, Omega is completely unaffected. Entities that share or pseudo-share Omega’s consciousness, e.g. Alphas, and the occasional human that share their blood, get reset physically but retain the memory via Omega.
    (2) The reset ability normally belongs to Alphas (their death), but when a human takes that ability away, only the human controls time reset (his/her death). When the human loses the Alpha blood, Alpha’s time reset ability is restored.
    (3) Even though the Mimic looks like a bunch of aliens, it is actually one being. (This is actually from the movie)
    (4) Single Timeline (or two timelines: regular timeline & the separate Omega timeline)
    (5) The Ending
Omega is dying. Cage is dying.
Time-resetting blood gets transferred to Cage’s body, making Cage a human “Alpha” again, whose death triggers time reset.
“Alpha” Cage dies. The day is reset.
But here, the term “resetting the day” is very vague and its parameters arbitrary. For the Omega itself and its physical and mental condition, day reset changes nothing. The Alphas’ day gets reset (their physical and positional condition), but they retain memory of the reset past because of the Omega. The tiny Mimics’ days get reset and they don’t remember what happened, but behave differently as they are controlled by better-knowing Omega/Alphas. The power-transferred human seems to behave similar to the Alpha, but when he/she dies, time gets reset to the beginning of the day that he/she last regained consciousness, and he/she wakes up at the time he/she last regained consciousness. I think the reason day keeps getting reset to the beginning of the day of the meeting and not the day of the attack is that Cage never sleeps during the night in between because he's either scared, nervous, or training. There's a reason the movie showed that sleepless night stroll fistfight scene. As far as time reset is concerned, those two Earth days in the movie are basically, biologically, one day. This consciousness principle doesn’t necessarily apply to the Alphas, since they probably don’t sleep, get knocked out and faint, etc.
Anyways, so when Cage dies, day is reset, and as the hurting Omega, retaining its physical/positional condition and unaffected by the reset, dies shortly after, Cage wakes up-after hours of the day where he was unconscious-not on the airport tarmac, but a few hours prior in the helicopter. Because hours have passed since the day was reset, Omega (and Alphas/Mimics, of course) has been dead for a while, humans have found the dead aliens and assumed that they miraculously died the night prior, meeting with the General has been cancelled, Cage never gets knocked out in the base, never faints and wakes up on the airport tarmac, thus making the helicopter wake-up his last return to consciousness.
The Alpha blood in Cage is probably meaningless now that Omega is gone, which means Cage does not have day resetting powers anymore. Cage is just a regular human being now, the only difference being the memory.
This explanation seems to make logical sense, but the premises required to make the logic work feel a bit contrived and arbitrary.

Not a bad explanation. To me it feels like they just wanted to force a happy-ending and Cage didn't need to live for that to happen imo, but if anything your explanation makes the most sense.

might be the closest to reasonable we can get. The human taking the ability from the omega doesn't make since, with the exception at the end. The aliens patterns stay the same throughout the movie so the Omega never tells them to do anything different till after the invasions normal events. If the Omega it actually independent of time, it should notice very quickly some guy doing something different every time while everyone else does the same. Direct control of each mimic also isn't unreasonable of the Omega functions similar to the computer.
More likely that the Omega and Cage can reset independently of each other, and thus reset each other. That would allow each mimic to behave the same after each reset, and the behavior shouldn't change unless the Omega does the reset, in which case, Cage should notice everything changing from the last run. Considering Cage got the ability on its Omega's ideal success attempt, it doesn't have a reason to reset. The only real problem with this is the Omega starts trying to bait cage. Though this can be mitigated by the Omega noticing one of the alphas being off after the invasion, and gets the bait plan and location sent after the invasion. this also assumes the cage died before Omega notices during the training, and doesn't try to bait him in those attempts.
The only real problem is how does the omega stay dead after the reset in which it dies. Or why the Omega cant reset after it dies.
Regardless i haven't found a explanation without holes.

talking about the ending. am i the only one that thinks Cruise and friends let the final attack more than twice and failed to not kill an Alpha. it would explain how the enemy knew they were coming but we dont see that because Cruise doesn't have the blood/power anymore

Sin 25 (or 26) is wrong ... he didn't free-fall, he rappelled down. You can see the lines attached to the ship on fire (he even entangle with others on the way down). Line only breaks when he is about to land, so he was a lot slower. Also, people have survived without a scratch from falling 10 floors (100 feet) if they don't hit anything and are cushioned (like ... a power suit?)
Anyway thumbs up on removing sins on his multiple sequential deaths, that was hilarious

anarchore The shock doesn't "become" internal. The shock *already is* internal because your insides move at a different speed than the rest of your body when you hit the ground, causing massive trauma. The body isn't just one big solid thing, man.

Seriously, people need to learn to critique a movie as a movie, regardless of adaptation. Judge the movie, as does it work well on its own. The original source material is ALWAYS going to be better. Get over it.
