Biggest problems for me as a fairly hardcore fan:
    1. Minimal cohesion between stories and lack of "world changing events" actually having any impact
    2. Multiverse fumble - completely underutilized and disappointing concept/theme in more ways than I can count
    3. Short Disney plus "shows" which lead to lack of a fulfilling story 80% of the time
    4. No "face of the mcu"
    5. Bad stories and writing - majority of content we've gotten has been disappointing and/or very underwhelming.
Endgame was not the end of the mcu but the end of a storyline. The mcu DOES NOT need a reboot, It needs better stories.

  • @josh-suber

The end of the MCU was End game. People went crazy for it, but that movie was kind of a mess and made no real sense narratively. And it set the tone for where things are now.

  • @JoshArtisto

Got rid of the most popular heroes (Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, T'Challa - RIP Chadwick) and introduced way too many new characters that we can't grow to love because there are way too many all at once, VFX issues, script issues, Thor was really good until Love and Thunder, too many shows that are required to understand the timeline/overall story, and other studios are doing R-rated comic book things that look better and have better stories whereas Disney Marvel is a little too safe.

  • @natelundstrum4903

Phase 3 was just so dang good. We got spoiled with Infinity War, Endgame, Thor Ragnarok Captain America Civil War, and Black Panther. In my opinion we were given gold and now that were getting bronze and silver movies. Its just like eehhh its not as good. Well you can't make number 1 hits forever. I'm confident that Marvel can still make great movies but we might have seen the peak of greatness with Avengers Endgame. - just my opinion

    • @benm5970

I feel like the MCU is like Star Wars in the sense that people hold the golden age of the franchise (The original trilogy/The infinity saga) to such an astronomically, almost unreal height that for them it’s physically impossible for anything else the franchise puts out to even come close to the golden age stuff

If you want your franchise to be big-make it big. No TV shows. Only movies.

  • @WastedPo
    @WastedPo Před 11 měsíci +3

I totally agree with John that there isn't a sense of "coherence" between the stories. Part of this is that, yes, there aren't consistent rules in how they're presenting the Multi-verse.
But worse, this is an inherent problem with having a shared movie universe at all. Because now you have to come up with all kinds of excuses as to why the other superheroes aren't helping out in any given situation (assuming you acknowledge they exist at all). I remember a downright comical scene in Spiderman: Far from Home, in which Nick Fury gives a list of excuses about why the other superheroes are busy.
And this isn't just because it's too expensive to pay all the actors to keep appearing (though that's surely a factor). It's because the very fact that they even exist in this world, all at once, means it's pretty implausible that there can be any big villains or supernatural conflicts to begin with. You just have to conveniently forget they exist. Only the people currently on your screen exist. And that takes a suspension of disbelief that wasn't required in the earlier entries.

Disney+ just dug a big old hole that Kevin Feige was told he had to fill with Marvel content. This not only produced lacklustre mini-series for streaming, but had a knock on effect on the movies too. So many great storylines that could have gradually been introduced in the movies had to be used to make barn fire content for streaming...

We got used to climax. Civil War, Ragnarok, Infinity War, Endgame in annual succession… and then back to Phase 1 -esque movies. It’s a cycle that’s going to have ebbs and flows due to its nature. But, the over-saturation has emphasized this and lead many to feel that the MCU is dead. I’m not saying I don’t feel that way, bc I do, but the sheer number of Phase 1 quality movies and very little interconnectivity (ie Phase 1 where it’s all expository) feels like a massive downgrade

  • @jonathana6429
    @jonathana6429 Před 11 měsíci +4

It’s honestly jarring that the MCU doesn’t recognize or reference the snap as much as it should be. It’s the biggest event in recorded human history that half the cast was around for yet it’s pretty much forgotten. It’s like the writers got tired of addressing it.

I said this about "The Blip" two years ago after watching TFATWS. Full disclosure, I haven't watched Wandavision yet. So I don't know how they handled it. We have had two stories that take place post-Blip. FFH and TFATWS and I don't think we still have any idea how fucked up the world was in those five years or the chaos that ensued when all those people returned. We saw it briefly in FFH, but was done more for comedic purposes than anything else.
There are times I feel like "The Blip" is going to wind up being one of those plot devices that was a good idea in theory, but wound up being poorly executed.

  • @TeatimesB

To add to some of your points -
Turns out multiverses seem really difficult to write meaningfully and intentionally, beyond a character standing there statically explaining exposition dialogue that there are multiple worlds, "let's hop into some wacky ones!" etc
The perfect (in film) model is Everything Everywhere All At Once - the concept is totally a part of what the movie's story wants to say emotionally. Animation also has a get out that every multiverse can be an interesting new artistic style, definate sense of place, and the reason to be there IS the art style in some ways. I'm not well-versed enough in the comics, but I think what we're finding is just deciding to have a Multiverse phase in film, without thinking through how it's going to be emotional and visually exciting, is surprisingly boring. Instead of an amazing multitude of worlds, without thought to emotion or diversity of aesthetic, it gets same old, same old.
Aesthetic sameness - CGI in the hands of Marvel is getting a very decided-upon, set aesthetic, there's lots of blues, lots of grey, theres lots of seen-it-before, mediocre CGI (and that's on Disney, not the creatives) A hegemony of aesthetic has set in for Marvel. It's not surprising, it's boring, and often ugly. It might be time to consider (within reason) SOME practical effects were at all possible.
Respect Special Effects/CGI workers - the crunch has to stop, the exploitation has to stop. Against this backdrop, there's a lot of rush going on, there's simply not time to create in a creative medium, or be basically humane to people.

I agree with your entire list, but I would add a very large problem in Thor. A character we have been so endeared to, and have watched toil and lose so much in such a short period of time in rapid succession.. Yet he continues to bafflingly devolve and regress. He is dumber now, but he ever has been. He has taken loss after loss and has learned so many lessons that are immediately retconned the following film. I like that he is arguably the funniest character, but he had the highest potential of being the new focal point as the identity of the MCU. Now he is an absolute buffoon, who has a backstory that has made no impact on who he is.

I personally would have made this phase way more underground. What i mean by that is, i would have started with Shang Chi and made the big threat be a war between the hand and the ten rings. Shang Chi Moon Knight ( not the supernatural version) and Blade and Daredevil would have films along with She Hulk. Loki would still have his show but that would help build on things to come way later.
Eternals would be a game of thrones style superhero family drama on Disney + with 1hr long eps.
I would cultivate them and make them the new faces. War Machine and Captain America still fit well within those parameters too. And thunderbolts still fit well too.
Thats just a bit of my “fantasy set up” lol

When marvel announced TV series on disney+ my thoughts were that they will do these series to fill in gaps along the way in between movies. Kind of going a bit deeper with all the characters presently in the MCU. and introduce new ones with the quality and scope of a movie. I think bob chapek with his bad decisions destroyed the plans that kevin Feige had for the shows. Also most producers and writers working with marvel TV series aren't comic book fans or neither does their homework properly prior to hitting the studio to star filming. Marvel needs to assemble a smal team of directors and writters whom are trully comic book fans, that undestand how each character works and bringing them to the big and small screen the right way. Instead of hiring any director to handle these tv series and movies on its own just have a small number of them working on two or three different projects whwre they can work better and more efficient.
For example daredevil and echo. The directors of daredevil shall work on both projects because those characters are related, same appliies to hawkeye. They series were connected ao it make sense that the director of daredevil and echo also have a saying on what happens in hawkeye for a better and more continuity storytelling. This is how i personally envisioned the marvel's TV series.

I honestly think the lack of a Thanos level event running through the newer films has hurt it a little bit. Did not care at all for Thor: Dark World but since it had a subplot with the reality stone in it it became required viewing and deepened the overall lore. Likewise GotG vol.1 gave a whole backstory to the Infinity stones but when you left the movie you still were more invested with the main cast. So whether it be a good MCU film or a bad one the run through story helped tie everything together even if it was subconscious. The 2 films between Infinity War and Endgame being Capt Marvel and Ant-Man & The Wasp would not have made the money that they did if everyone wasn't thirsty for even the most minute clue as to how to get our heroes back. Ant-Man maybe didnt have the biggest impact but there is no way that Capt Marvel released today would earn 1 billion. The tease at the end of Infinity war hyped up that film. I agree that you don't "need" every movie to be reliant on watching the previous but the MCU has programed us that way. It's why Endgame made the money that it did. I mean if you were telling someone that's never seen any marvel movie but was interested in starting with Guardians of the Galaxy and watching them 1 - 3 everyone would stop that person and suggest watching Infinity War and Endgame before watching vol.3 even though they are not GOTG movies. It only seems like now that the MCU is attempting to break that formula and going in several different directions which clearly is not working. Other than that they truly do need a "face" of the MCU. If WWE has taught us anything is that you need a champion. Just bring out the Fantastic Four already and start there. The best thing the the MCU can do at this point is at the end of the next Avengers film have the post credit scene be something flying through the universe revealing itself to be Silver Surfer finding Earth and then cut to black.

John, the literally built a whole business and studio around the franchise comic brand. at this point if you havent been following the story, you have time to catch up. The continuity is actually one of the greatest strengths of Marvel.
A new fan might not be able to jump in. But if they took the time to watch an older entry point film. Then it all starts to make sense.
Then again, theres enough info to catch anyone up looking to get into the space.

With the new wave of female heroes they introduced leading the way, they probably gave Gaia all the powers because they’ll need a woman villain. It’s gonna get visually problematic if they only have women heroes and the male villains beat on them… and if they beat up the male villains too easily, it’s not gonna work well for fans that want great battle action.
