When 29ers first came out, local guys were racing on Mavic Ksyrium road wheels. They couldn't have been wider that 19mm...on the outside. Granted, the newly manufactured 29er tires were probably only 2.2s since wide wasn't really a thing back in the early/mid '00s, let alone disc brakes.

I have 2.3" Maxxis DTHs on a bike that has Araya RM17 rims. That's a 17mm rim for those who aren't familiar. It rides fine, the major criticism I do have is cantilever brakes aren't easy to set up well when the rim is so far away from the brake posts.
The biggest risk is eventual sidewall failure of the tyre as the rim has potential to "cut" into the sidewall, especially with lower pressures. Just ride it like you stole it and who cares!

My road bikes all have alloy rims that were designed to max out at 23 or 25mm tires. They all have rim brakes. I'm a believer in staying within design specs, and I grew up using even skinnier tires, so it's not an issue for me. I could probably make 28mm work, but I don't need to. I don't even want to.

I've had shops tell me that the max suggested to run on rim is 2.3x its internal width. So on an i13mm that would be 30mm tire. 28mm is less than 30mm. You don't get the same psi advantage of a 28mm on say an i19 rim, but it still would lower than 25-26mm on that rim.

2.0" Conti Doublefighter on 15mm internal width here. Runs fine. 1.9" GK slick needed too much pressure (got harsh with alu fork) to not kind of fold unto itself in turns, probably because of its more slender casing. Not out of safety, but I've found 2.5WT and larger tires (prefer Maxxis DRHII/Dissector combo) just don't feel as grippy in hard turns. I think its because the side knobs just don't engage as early or as well. Different tires likely differ, this is just the tread and size combo that suits me best in my normal terrain.

Only downside with 2.6 on i23mm is, one doesn't get the low psi advantages 2.6 offer. It makes the tires a bit more like a light bulb in shape, which in some terrain it's a con as you know. I'm sure you can find some $40 take off wider rims on pinkbike just to have another option.

Ok so you won't die... but any notes on the ride quality of the narrow rim? I always thought the biggest disadvantage to a rim that's "too narrow" for the tire would be the tire getting squirmy on high speed turns, but it doesn't look like this particular trail had those (at least not that made the cut). what pressures do you run? I feel like at certain low pressures with no cushcore and a tubeless setup that you may have problems with a wide tyre on a narrow rim or narrow tyres on wide rims like pushing in corners, I feel it would just fold and come off the rim more easily.

So much depends on your weight, sidewalls of your tires, tubes/tubeless, riding conditions, etc. I can feel more squirm on my 23mm vs my 27mm on the same low low tire/pressure 50mm tire. You can get buy pretty well on narrow rims. Just be a bit more careful at your limits of cornering traction.
