  • The Amsterdam School (or Amsterdamse School, as it is known in Dutch), originally was the name for a style developed shortly after 1910 by architects Michel de Klerk (1884-1923), Johan van der Mey (1878-1949) and Piet Kramer (1881-1961), who all previously worked at Eduard Cuypers architects office in Amsterdam until the 1910s. Today it's considered one of the most prominent schools of Dutch expressionist architecture.
In the early 1920's there was an unique situation in Amsterdam:
    - There was a budget for modernisation and social housing projects from the gouvernment
    - Labour was cheap because of the great depression. And therefore the labour intensive brickstone architecture of the amsterdam school was affordable to build.
