The Wiper Blade Rant: Unnecessary Wipes & Designs • Cars Simplified

  • Steve needs a minute or so to talk about wiper blades. Rear wipers on so many cars make an extra wipe that they don't have to, and if it was necessary, that speed/urgency can be selected already.
Also, what's with all the different rear wiper blade attachment designs? Every manufacturer seems to want to come up with a different size attachment pin or a slightly different guide, and none of these designs actually improve the wiper in any way!
These designs make replacing rear wiper blades needlessly more difficult for DIY consumers and pros alike, and can sometimes even result in broken wiper arms.
Bosch Icon wiper blades are mentioned twice, and Trico rear wiper blades are mentioned once, but neither of them are affiliated with Cars Simplified.

The foldy flap thing definitely needs to be the new standard.

I have a 2008 Subaru impreza, no rear wiper blade and yet this makes sooooo much sense.

I see Trico has Exact Fit wipers for our Crosstreks. Both front and back. I still have my original and my car is 2 years 9 months old but only 6600 miles. I also wipe the blade of dirt and grime and the newer designs seem to last several years. Your videos are great and NEVER a waste of my time!!!

      Thanks for the kind words!
I'm quite confident the rear wiper they make will fit well, but I'm curious how well the front one will fit given the interesting design choice Subaru made with the front connectors. I have some extra fancy Trico Force wiper blades on the front, and while I think the driver side fit without modification, the passenger side again had to be modified, both for fit and to not block the washer sprayer stream.
That exact fit line that I will probably try out next; they don't have a lot of the advantages of many of their other offerings, they do tend to be designed to overcome any challenges the original manufacturer creates.

@@CarsSimplified it looks like it has the same coupling as the OE. Maybe even made by Trico for Subaru.

Nice! I'll definitely look into those next time. I should have checked for something like that this most recent change, but I am just too hooked on premium wiper blades.

Entertaining rant 😅. Don't have a rear wiper blade so I can't share your frustration but you make sense, why wipe the other way again? Variety of hook styles can be annoying too though, just make them universal!

I only just encountered the rear wiper issue on a Pontiac Vibe I think. Looked really weird. I'm just used to old Subarus where the rears were still all J-hook.

Fun rant, hahaha. I get like this about "trivial" topics a lot. You've probably noticed.

Must be nice! I wonder when they changed.
I think if both parties don't think the topic is trivial, they don't notice that it is, which is what I'm going with to explain not noticing.

@@CarsSimplified Hahaha that's very fair. If you hadn't prefaced this video by telling people to bug off if they don't care, I probably wouldn't have thought of it either.

The HHR had that goofy ass rear blade.

  • @ISawSomethingOnTheInternet

Wow a complaint that no one else has. I spend less time worrying about my wiper blades than I spent on this video. Lame. You have better content. This one is a reach man...

You are the person he was talking about in the beginning of the video. Like he said, you're needed back in 2012

Sherman Harris Just because you start a video saying “hey this is garbage, but I’m gonna talk about it anyway“ doesn’t give you a free pass for lame content. This guy does a lot of great stuff, but this isn’t part of it - I think anyone who watches his other videos would agree.

You probably spent more time responding to this video then you purportedly spend worrying about wiper blades.
