Barnacles are a highly specialized group of crustaceans. They have developed a sessile lifestyle as adults, attaching themselves to various substrates such as rocks, ships, whales or to sea turtles. Mostly found barnacles on sea turtles. Barnacles attach to a turtle’s shell due to its hardness. Barnacles need a hard surface to bind with so that they can thrive. A single barnacle does not harm a turtle. However, excessive barnacles can make a turtle inactive, impact its vision, make eating difficult, and sometimes lead to infection. Excessive barnacles on a turtle’s shell are a sign of bad health. Excessive barnacles are an indicator of a slow and inactive turtle. The overloading of barnacles will prevent the turtle from moving and swimming properly. Then turtle will become slower than usual because of increased weight on the turtle’s shell, it will find it difficult to search for food. Also, if the barnacles are attached near the turtle’s eyes, its vision will get impacted. Barnacles attached near the mouth of the turtle are also harmful. The turtle will not be able to eat properly due to excessive barnacles.

Barnacles can occasionally be found etched into the turtle's shell. Attempting to remove these barnacles with force might seriously harm the shell.
Furthermore, once extracted from the surface, barnacles cause an open wound⚠. This area may get infected if it is not properly treated with medicine and can be more harmful than barnacles.🚩🚩

This is well intentioned, but please do not do this if you find a turtle covered in barnacles.
A. Forceful removal can seriously injure turtles
B. The correct way to remove them is to just house the turtle in a freshwater tank for 2-3 days, the freshwater doesn’t harm the turtle but quickly kills the barnacles
C. When a turtle is covered to a dangerous extent in barnacles, it’s because they are likely also suffering other immune issues, they naturally get rid of barnacles themselves in the wild, but if they are ill they are unable to, meaning the turtle is probably already in need of specialized care from a rescue professional if they’re completely covered like that

That turtle was so patient, he could feel the relief and the weight lifted. It must have been so hard carrying that excess weight for no damn reason but to be leeched on. PRAISE the most high for healing this turtle and for the man helping. I just rescued two kittens and got rid of their fleas, and paying for their physical and shots next month and medicine today.

I appreciate the beautiful effort, being a marine biologist and working with turtles ...just sharing a bit of knowledge....if the turtle is kept in fresh water for 24 to 48 hrs the barnacles will fall off that's the best way of removing barnacles. Sometimes the barnacle will be crusted deep in turtle carapace/she'll and methods like this can cause carapace damage and pain for the turtle.

I asked a vet if this was helpful fir turtles. She said that normal healthy turtles should not attract barnacles so the turtles are probably sick (or have been), so yes, it helps the turtles.

His heart was in the right place but he injured the shell by forcefully removing the barnacles. Instead you could put the turtle in fresh water for a few days and the barnacles will fall off or easily be scraped off.
I studied earlier in college that barnacles did not gave any harmful effect to both whales and turtles in topic of Commensalisam

@@HdHd-hp6qz Incorrect. Sea turtles can be in fresh water for a short period of time. In fact, it's how they clean itself from parasites. Sea turtles don't stay for long periods of time for the fact their main food source are found in saltwater.
