  • Hello Guys,
This Video About Rescue Sea Turtle, Removing Barnacles From Poor Sea Turtle [Animals, Nature, Ocean, Moana] CHIKA BOY
Barnacles are a highly specialized group of crustaceans. They have developed a sessile lifestyle as adults, attaching themselves to various substrates such as rocks, ships, whales or to sea turtles. Mostly found barnacles on sea turtles. Barnacles attach to a turtle’s shell due to its hardness. Barnacles need a hard surface to bind with so that they can thrive. A single barnacle does not harm a turtle. However, excessive barnacles can make a turtle inactive, impact its vision, make eating difficult, and sometimes lead to infection. Excessive barnacles on a turtle’s shell are a sign of bad health. Excessive barnacles are an indicator of a slow and inactive turtle. The overloading of barnacles will prevent the turtle from moving and swimming properly. Then turtle will become slower than usual because of increased weight on the turtle’s shell, it will find it difficult to search for food. Also, if the barnacles are attached near the turtle’s eyes, its vision will get impacted. Barnacles attached near the mouth of the turtle are also harmful. The turtle will not be able to eat properly due to excessive barnacles.

Turtles are around for millions of years, so how did they deal with barnacles before humans start to notice and help them to remove those pests?

Can anyone tell me why barnacles appear on turtles and what they actually are ??
The thing is, I didn't know this actually happened 😳 to turtles and I used to work in a seafood restaurant and I used to scrape barnacles off the mussel 🐚 shells
I was a bit younger back then and didn't query what the barnacles were on the mussel shells I just did it whilst cleaning them before cooking
      Please reply 🙏🏻 💙
Ps this guy is amazing 👏 😍 well done 👏

Aw thank you for the 💙 - how kind - acknowledgement of your viewers☺ I'm just a new sub from yesterday, but can anyone tell me why and what barnacles are? Are they like 'ticks' in a land animals?
As I used to scrape them off mussel shells when I was younger (I used to clean them in large amounts before they were cooked) at Scotland's oldest seafood bar - Glasgow's Loch Fyne shellfish bar est 1956 - and still opened to this day.
Was my first job as a teenager at 13. I then worked there for a few years when I was out of work in my late 20s. I gained so much respect for the men seafood pickers: whelks (sea snails) 🌊 🐌 were picked by hand at all times and most of the mussels were hand gathered too.
These mens' hands were always sore and inflamed looking.
I didn't give it much thought as a child working in there, but as an adult I learned things, would listen to their stories & experiences about the ocean as they had also been fishermen too at points, I saw these men in a different intriguing light.
🌊 🦭 ⛵ 🐚 🐢 🐟 🐠 🎣 🦀 🍥 🦈 🏝 🐋 🌊 🦑 🐠 🦞 🦂 🐡 🐙 🐳 🐚 Everything about the oceans now fascinates me; from the shells that wash up; creatures that live there; the food we eat from it; the crustaceans and fish different cultures eat and how they use them to cook specific dishes.
We in Scotland, well we eat the cooked mussels in salted water and sell bags of them or plates in the seafood bar. People buy bags of whelks and we give pins 📌 so they pick them out & eat as they go. Whelks are very popular, same as mussels, I don't know what other cultures would call 'whelks'. We sell smoked mussels too but this is a new thing, whereby they are put in a smoker and are eaten doused in oil. This gives a weird salty flavour. We sell bags of 'dulce' which is a type of seaweed we eat - again very salty! We sell mostly cartons of hot mussels to go: and people add vinegar and buy 'cups of mussel brae' (the juice that the mussels cooked in) to drink hot. We sell prawns, squid rings and crab sticks in seafood sauce (these are the only things that are pre packed but fresh) I still visit the bar often and they also sell cooked prawns from fresh in small tubs, people mostly eat them with a seafood type sauce: tomato 🍅 sauce and puree, mayonnaise, garlic, soy sauce, paprika and give it a good mix lol, I used to make loads of it up when I worked there.
Anyway, we don't have fancy dishes or add sauces/vegetables or herbs to the seafood like I've seen on TV like other cultures may do.
Our shop historically, and still to this day has always been more attractive to the 'working class' and poorer folks from the inner city. Hence why the shop has never sold lobster as it is very expensive where we live.
However, I have visited some nice restaurants in the North of Scotland and have gotten the same dish as we cooked at the bar : hot mussels cooked in salt water. Plain old Scottish delicacies. So it is similar all over Scotland - we just plain and simple cooks lol and have a salt problem!! Our salmon is also 😋 👌🏻
Anyway the reasons why I've left such a long comment: firstly if anyone can answer me about barnacles? Secondly, I am just so fascinated by the sea and wonder what it is like eating seafood in other cultures.
If you have read this far then peace ✌ out 💙🙏

Excessive barnacle cover can be a sign of general bad health of a turtle. Usually sea turtles are debilitated first, and then become covered in an extensive amount of other organisms, such as barnacles and algae.

KNOWLEDGE IF YOU FIND A REAL SEATURTLE COVERED WITH BARNACLES:
*Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project* : PLEASE DON'T REMOVE BARNACLES WITH SHARP TOOLS! Take the sea turtle to a marine rehabilitation center!
The barnacles are not the problem with the animal but, they are a *symptom* of some other ailment. A healthy turtle can control its barnacle load so if it has excessive barnacles; this is a symptom that something is very wrong with the turtle and, most probably, it has been sick for a while..
*- Appearance of the skin and external surfaces*
The inspection of skin and of external surfaces of the animal is fundamental and
must be done very carefully. First of all, it is necessary to evaluate the presence of
ectoparasites, their localization and extension, as well as the identification of types
(barnacles, limpets, leeches, algae, etc..) If present in excessive amounts,
they may be a first sign of the turtle’s discomfort because they tell us that the
animal has recently been moving slowly. Because ectoparasites are very tenaciously
attached to the surface of the animal, *their removal should not be done
mechanically using knives, chisels or other tools that could be traumatizing, as they
risk to severely damage skin and shield. *For a removal without trauma, it is enough
to maintain the patient for two or three days in fresh water, resulting in death and
      detachment of all ectoparasites.*

To all the ignorant people who wrote "thank you for helping them" in comments: this is causing more harm than good. First, turtles have nerve endings on the shells and scraping them is like using a sharp knife to scrape off nail polish. It can cause more damage and hurts.
And healthy turtles can remove barnacles themselves. So when they are covered with barnacles, it means they are sick. You need to bring them to specialists or conservation centres to heal them.
When you scrape off the barnacles leaving wounds and throwing them back into the sea, it causes more infections to their already bad health.
Please educate yourselves. Google. Plenty of information.

I have absolutely no doubt that you're doing this out of a kind heart, but I found this article:
In the United States, the removal of barnacles needs a proper permit. In the absence of a permit, barnacle removal is considered a violation of the Endangered Species Act and is a severe offense. It is considered harassment to the listed species.
Forcibly removing the barnacles can be very painful to the turtle. The turtle’s plastron and carapace are soft. So, removing the barnacles with force can damage the turtle’s shell. When several barnacles are attached to the turtle’s shell, it becomes all the more important to remove them carefully.
The barnacles sometimes get etched into the turtle’s shell. Trying to remove such barnacles with force can lead to the shell getting injured severely. Besides, once the barnacles are removed from the surface, they leave an open wound. If this wound is not treated with proper medication, it can get infected. This is more dangerous than the barnacles themselves.
Most of the barnacles are not harmful and do not hurt the turtles. However, if there is an infestation of barnacles on the turtle’s shell, it is not a healthy sign.
Excessive barnacles on a turtle’s shell is a sign of bad health. A healthy turtle can control the number of barnacles. So, if a turtle is overloaded with barnacles on its shell, it can prove fatal to its well-being.
In a wildlife center, some specialized people are well aware of the barnacle removal procedure from a turtle’s shell. The Center places the turtles in the freshwater. This procedure ensures no further growth of any barnacles, and any existing algae fall off in the next 2 to 3 days. Also, keeping the turtles in freshwater makes it easier to remove the barnacles.
Besides, the Center staff also carries out a blood test to check for any other ill-effects. With proper care and medication, most of the turtles recover within a couple of weeks and are then sent back to the sea.

@@sarahgeorget89 I don't keep articles But You can find related articles easily. It's not a secret, You can just google it, ask questions if removing barnacles from turtles is safe.
Most of the answers from experts are same : You shouldn't do it in most cases. Some of them say you shouldn't even touch it in the first place.
I must stress though, majority of people (non-experts) DO think it's ok to do so 'if you're careful'. unfortunately. Just like people think it's okay to touch baby seals.
So just look for articles written by marine biologists or aquarists, for example. Not those 'well I think it's ok..ish?' answers.
I personally think CZcams should demonetize some of the amateur 'rescue' videos so that they don't encourage unnecessary hurting of.. well, turtles in this case.

Don't compare US article to that of India. Here the government takes no good care or has much thoughts for the animals. I don't support any of these so called actions of help, but the situation at the other end is also very bleak. One Chiku Boy isn't responsible for hurting as many turtles as the government is
