      Not really a problem with proper species selection, especially with the Geosesarma as an Apex Predator. It's more of an issue with overstocked systems that deplete the microfauna population and require feeding, especially with species like Mandarins in a Marine Aquarium that're obligate copepod predators. As long as the system's housed in an Enclosure of sufficient size and volume...

You mentioned not being comfortable with leaving the gekos in the tank... but then crabs are just allowed to rip each other apart. It is just an interesting observation how the instant something has a skeleton instead of a exoskeleton we start valuing its life more than other animals. Like when I saw the baby gekos I felt a pit in my stomach about them being killed and eaten, but then stopped and asked myself why I didn't feel the same way for the other animal babies. @MsScarletwings Před rokem +133

      Well, I assume (hope) with most people it’s not about invertebrate vs vertebrate, but rather level of sentience. Crabs are neurologically much more primitive than most reptiles... and people eat them pretty often too. Viewing certain animals as a food source requires people to either forfeit some of their perceived value OR adopt a cognitively dissonant view of it.
      The short answer is that crabs are not proven to perceive pain and suffering to the same degree that a gecko is known to, crabs are often viewed as a food source while captive geckos are often pets, and crabs have way fewer characteristics and expressions that humans can empathize with.

    • @MsScarletwings
      @MsScarletwings Před rokem +1

      @@kid14346 oh Theres no real solid “why” behind how certain animals became food and others became pets besides the luck of geographic distribution and time. Typically, animals that become major cultural food sources are either
      - plentiful in the wild and easy to harvest on a large scale sustainably
      - easy to domesticate and breed in captivity
      Crustaceans like crabs are a good example of the former. Shrimp are basically the cockroaches of the ocean, and they are a very nutritious AND low-Mercury source of marine protein. Crabs breed like crazy and coastal civilizations learned quickly that they make for good eating when cooked properly.
      Chickens are a great example of the latter. They were not only useful to human populations for their meat, but also for their egg production. The original wild chickens (red jungle fowl) were unique from other known birds in that their reproduction speed changed depending on the availability of food in the environment. Farmers learned that if you kept them very well fed, they kept laying eggs and breeding rapidly.

      Part of what I find interesting about owning an ecosystem is it's like you're their god. If you really wanted to, you could cut off their water supply for 3 days and incur a drought upon them, or you could add hazardous new environmental factors to see how they cope with it. But since the majority of us aren't bug sadists, we just let them live peaceful and happy lives (as happy as nature gets, anyway). Basically, their fate lies entirely in your control.

      My buddy has a fish tank that turned into a snake tank, that turned into an entire terrarium over time and it's been in his living room for years. Every time I go over there we end up staring at and talking about it for at least an hour or two. Having an entire ecosystem that can take care of itself is such an accomplishment and such a good way to teach your kids about life and death.

    I always knew ecosystem balancing was no small feat. Losing one species or introducing an invasive one can destroy it entirely. This one is no exception. The dominant species has grown too much both times. I wonder what else it needs to reach a perfect balance?
