  • At one of NGI's laboratories, researchers have done their best to mimic the conditions that are 384,400 kilometers away from Earth: The conditions on the Moon. By studying 10,000 particles from the Apollo expeditions, they gather valuable information for the first Moon expedition in 50 years - the Artemis. This time, the aim is to build a habitable base on the Moon, with permanent constructions and, for instance, a system for food production. After all, there are no lunar food delivery or takeaway services available for future astronauts.
So, what are the conditions on the Moon like? How do materials, like a grain of lunar soil, behave? Is there, for instance, sufficient minerals in the lunar soil to grow food? And what about water?
NGI's senior geophysicist Dylan Mikesell and senior researcher Luke Griffiths have the answers to this and much more exciting information about the Moon and why knowledge about the ground conditions is essential.
