Wow! Thank you so much for supporting the Real Doctor Reacts to series. I said that if you get the grey's anatomy video to 15k likes I'll do another episode and you CRUSHED it by getting it 200k+ likes. I dove into the comments section to see what medical tv drama you wanted me to review next and it seemed like the good doctor was the obvious choice. Get ready TV Doctors, because Dr. Mike is coming for you =]
Full disclosure, I have never watched an episode of the good doctor on ABC so I decided to go ahead and start my tv medical drama review off with the first episode ( good doctor 1x01 ) of the series. I was really curious myself to see if the good doctor is a medically accurate show.
I really did enjoy this medical tv show because I think it did a lot of things well. It gave an interesting look into what life is like a for a surgeon and a resident. Being a surgical resident is not an easy job and to make the situation even more complex Dr. Sean Murphy has autism so they did a great job of breaking down these circumstances.
I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches The Good Doctor / Real Doctor Reacts to the Good Doctor. If you want me to continue making this tv medical drama series please like the video and leave me a comment on which medical tv show or episode you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

The most unrealistic part of this show is that all the doctors spend a lot of time with their patients and even perform procedures aside from surgery. They even visit the patients as a group. In my experience it's hard to get one doctor to come and spend 5 minutes with you at a hospital, much less a group of them.

    • @erindreams5610
      @erindreams5610 Před rokem +237

If you're in a university or large teaching hospital, a large group of doctors will come see you. I'm currently in a hospital since Sept., and the head surgeon comes with his residents to see me almost daily. Same thing happened when I was in a big university hospital in Chicago 20yrs ago. Smaller hospitals don't tend to do it. But then I seem to be a teaching case, so that's why they might be bringing all the students with.

They won't usually if you don't require surgery, but that depends, sometimes they do. However, I've had three open heart surgeries at Yale (I live 10 minutes away). Before surgery you generally meet with the whole surgery team, I've ever had them come when surgery wasn't yet on the table at that point from different disciplines and meet at the same time as a group, which isn't normal but can happen if you're a patient with a lot of issues that need addessing.

The issue I have with early intervention stuff is that it mostly teaches masking (ie looking in the eye), which is a delicate balance. Not making eye contact isn't just unnatural, it's uncomfortable. Masking takes a lot of energy which can lead to burnout, it can also prevent someone from accessing necessary support because they are deemed "lower support needs"(previously known as high functioning) the thing to remember is, 'higher functioning' doesn't mean you find it easier to deal with, it means it's easier for other people to deal with.

Never say someone. Point directly to a few people and tell them to call/get help. During a situation like that people wont take action because they are to busy staring. Which is a normal thing to do but then everyone is also busy thinking someone else is making the call
Pointing to someone directly will be more likely to get an actual result.

i remember in school, we were taught to *POINT* at someone to call for 911 like:
*"HEY YOU, IN THE RED SHIRT OR YOU IN THE BROWN JACKET CALL 911 NOW."*
because apparently, people are too busy looking at the accident and won't do anything unless ordered to.
edit (1): people have been commenting that it's actually because they're thinking other people have done it (calling 911). i just forgot to add it here. this was also said by my professor. we need to point at people so that 1.) no one would call another ambulance and have a few more people calling and have like 10 ambulances in the area, and 2.) to prevent the people not doing anything (or at least don't want to get involved).

The actor Freddie who plays Shaun spent a week or something like that. With an autistic person. He said that he wanted to portray it right that he didn’t want to offend anyone by just guessing at it. (These aren’t his exact words but you get it).
Freddie is an amazing actor and I can’t wait to see more.

And yeah by staring I meant, I intensely stared at that too. My brother is 6 years older than me and he still refuses to go to the meat market with my dad while I'm the eager one.

I'm Autistic and the guy who did my assessment always said that it's not for Autistic people to change its for other people to accept it. Forcing yourself to maintain eye contact and generally pretending to be "normal" often just leads to massive breakdowns further down the line as you are constantly working at not standing out.

My son is autistic. It has taken me years of failure to learn how to accept his idiosyncrasies as okay and not necessary for me to change. It’s a massive struggle for the neurotypical to adapt to the people who are autistic and make the different social connections that they use, translating them to what that means in neurotypical. It’s like constantly translating body language where one version means things other than what I’ve come to associate with them.
Parenting is hard anyways, prone to error with lasting consequence. Parenting an autistic child, even high functioning, is a whole other level of difficult.
All I can say is thank God for my wife who has refused to let me not learn better.

This, like of course there are some things we must learn to do. Like if something stops us from functioning then we need to work on it, but forcing yourself to be normal or forcing yourself to do things that make you uncomfortable that are not at all beneficial to do are just not needed. Like if how you are stops you from having a job then you need to work on that (assuming it’s possible to help) but clapping your hands when your excited doesn’t need to be, it’s others fault if they find that weird not you.

Haven't seen the show tbh but as I've been a person with Asperger's ,
I feel great to have it , especially when you work on your speaking. I remember as a kid i used to be too mischievous to handle but after age 5 , for some reason I was finding it hard to speak with people I met 1-2 times, even after knowing a lot ( people with Asperger's know) i used to get straight blank so on a nice day my Dad took me to a doctor & i think that doctor actually changed my perspectives about this disease which i actually don't consider as a disease. People with Aspergers are great at things that normal People may get good at but after they try hard. My change in speaking & public relations started at 13 , now I've almost corrected my blankness , can talk in multiple languages all at once with anyone. It took years to overcome but itt feels like a bliss now.
