Airline Pilots Use These Small Computers For Almost Everything

- Cockpit scenes filmed under Part 91 with permission from Envoy Air, Inc… Airline pilots use the FMS, or Flight Management System, almost as much as the autopilot or flight controls. If you're a student pilot or flight instructor, you've probably never used one before, and it's one of the most important things you'll learn as you get started. The FMS is used for anything from programming routes, messaging dispatch, and printing weather reports, to calculating fuel and managing crossing altitudes.
While in some cases we are legal to fly without even a single operating FMS, that's highly unusual and the FMS remains one of the most important resources we have in the flight deck.

What else do you want to learn about jets and flying for an airline? Leave me a comment with an idea!
How do you progress from second officer to captain and the requirements needed for each promotion stage.
Question: Do people give a pilot that's retiring soon or is retiring due to some medical reasons a tribute ?
Can you make episode about checkride, how airlines looks at checkride failures in early training, instrument or commercial, and how big is the effect on getting hired? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks
An updated video on what your daily routine looks like from getting to the airport to lodging at the final destination for the day. I know you have made separate videos for those, but maybe how it all ties together in one video for a day in the life!
Bidding.
One day I will see you in a larger jet or perhaps in a corporate jet. Something you might think about is a "Meet Swayne Martin in person event".
Yes what a smart guy, he is well on his way to fly the A380
@@chemybamford9919 Unlikely unless he went to the ME3 their is really no path to get their
chemy bamford the a380 is slowly retiring, not a lot of airlines fly it, a more reasonable goal would be a 777 or 737
Long time no see. I’ve missed you man. You’re my inspiration.
Thanks Tristen!
Swayne Martin Np, keep up the great work
Thanks for that FMC guide! It looks similar to ATR and different with B737. Nice job! Keep it up!
I wish the videos were longer but I can’t imagine how busy you must be!! Thx for the quality content 👍
It's hard to manage everything but I try to make it work for you guys!
non-qwerty keyboard layout is evil.
You get used to it.
In fact I’m not looking forward to the day I have to transition to one (most new ones are QWERTY).
You one hand type and the longest words are typically five letter fixed with nonsensical names.
I'm used to it
Totally agree
That was me that just shook your hand at O’Hare while you were on the phone just a few days ago! Didn’t want to bother you and had to get to my gate but just wanted to say big fan and thank you! Hope one day you can pilot a plane I’m on.
nigel002 Thanks for saying hey! Sorry I wasn’t able to chat more
Swayne Martin No problem. Completely understand. Stay safe
Very cool content Swayne
If you need a video idea, you can probably talk about things to focus on when picking a flight school for training. Thanks for the content, it’s awesome
You never fail to impress me with your detailed and understandable explanations of systems. Love the footage, while in the air, from the cockpit.
I love watching your videos, Swayne! I have long been fascinated by the inner workings of airlines so your content is much appreciated. I have shared your videos with my father, who also loves planes! Keep up the great work!
Working towards my PPL right now. Your work here on CZcams as well as on Boldmethod have been unbelievably helpful for me. Keep it up man.
TheBoeingRailroader That’s awesome!!
Wow, i thought it was bit easy to control the FMS in ERJ. But it is more complicated than A320. Good work bro. Keep learning.
Thanks for the information about the FMS! Always enjoy your videos!
Thanks!!
Love the info and insights! Keep up the great work!
Love your videos..Happy to see you after so many days.
Swayne, your videos are fantastic! Especially for someone considering becoming a pilot one day! I learn so much about the planes and the process of being a pilot. Keep-’em coming!!
Another great job as usual! Keep up the good work!
Awesome video swayne. Very informative
Swayne, thanks for the videos! Your work helps me get rid of some of the uncertainty I'm feeling for when I switch careers.
You've been so much of a help from when you worked on the caravan to where you are here. Gave me an understanding on what I should to when i get older to work my way up to a airline pilot.
Well my morning is made.
Awesome!! Glad you liked it
You’ve really inspired me to become a commercial pilot, thank you so much for giving you information about airplanes in your videos!
When are you going to make “how to taxi through Chicago O’hare airport? Good vid by the way.
Dev Patel That’s coming soon
Uh... call ground and ask for taxi clearance?
And writing down even the most complex taxi clearances are easy.
Swayne, you never, ever disappoint with your videos. Very professional, good editing, (I'd like to know where you get your background music from!). Seeing your videos is not just a joy, but remarkably educational and informative. You have a great 'camera presence' and all of your b-roll is outstanding. Loved the L-wing/sunset/rise shot towards the end. It is always a better day when there is a new Swayne video. Don't ever look back sir, keep going forward always.
It's really sad that the video ends
I honestly love small looks like this into pilot life! Well done friend.
You should consider doing a video on the growing trend of lost passenger luggage and what can be done to improve the situation. The inconvenience caused by such unfortunate events on passengers is massive
Thanks for the great vid Swayne, you're gonna make airline ground school much easier for us!
Pretty sure that you flew me on New Year's Day! I love your videos!
I love the inside knowledge you provide about the career i’m working towards now. You’re a great mentor.
Iker Almasia glad it helps!
Good video as always, keep them coming.😎
One of your most interesting videos so far 👍
Awesome production quality! 2 Thumbs Way up!
Envoy is coming to my flight school next week, I will be looking into their cadet program. My instructor has already been hired by Envoy
Great, informative video as always! Really enjoyed this one!
Nice video on behind the scenes flight management. David Clarks! 2:51 - awesome!
Great Video and information. Thanks!
Nice to see you inspiring future aviators with your videos. I just hope flight school was more skill-driven than money-driven.
Swayne great video . Thanks for showing how the FMS works .
great stuff as always!
Hey Swayne thanks for the great video and information. This Friday ive got my CFI ride im pretty excited.
Awesome! Good luck man
Your videos are so interesting and informative. I’m sure you enjoy flying the ERJ. As a passenger, I’ve been on quite a few ERJs myself. They’re great for short hops like SWF-PHL, which I fly a lot. But I once flew on one from EWR to MSY, and it wasn’t comfortable on the longish flight; too much wind noise, and an unsettled feeling, as if it couldn’t maintain a stable ride. I asked my son, who was traveling with me, and he agreed that it unsettled his stomach after awhile. But we arrived safe and on-time, so that’s what counts!
Awesome vlog Swayne!! It was nice to see how the FMS works on the Embraer. Thanks for the tutorial. How do you guys handle turbulence?
Never stop learning. You get some great angles
Once again Swayne another well done and informative professional presentation.
Always love seeing new vids! You inspire me to follow my dreams! ✈️
Nick Sintora Awesome Nick!
EXCELLENT STUFF to know!! :-) Hope all things work out the way it should today!
Great video Swayne. Already looking forward to the next one.
Very nicely done!
Big fan of your videos Swayne; I even went back and saw the ones at Mokulele. I'm currently studying for my CFI myself. I'd like to see a video on all of the intangible factors which go into choosing a regional airline that most people may not consider aside from airframe and domicile. All the best.
Can't believe nobody's made a reference to the TPS reports... classic movie...
But the main thing I want to mention is about the shot of the pushback with the headphones hanging out of the side of the aircraft still. Different airline last month had an incident where someone forgot the headphones and the regional aircraft arrived at its destination with the door open and cord still attached. headphones themselves, a pax saw it hit the wing and explode during the take off roll! YIKES!
So much i didnt know about the FMS!!!! Very interesting thanks!!!
Part of a pilot's job is to engender confidence and hospitality to all Customers. You do a great job doing both !!!!
Well done !
Once again, a superbly done video! Keep ‘em coming. The information as well as the camera “effects” are very entertaining.
Thank you so much for what you do!🙂🙃🙂👍🏻
Don Anderson Thanks Don!
I get so excited when you upload a video. Keep it up!
Thanks David!
Need more Swayne Martin content. Keep them coming bro!!
I don't know a channel better than this. Congratulations, Pilot!
Good video swayne
Great video as alway. You represent Envoy in a very professional way with your great videos. Hope to see more cockpit videos. Maybe do a video from going from dark to start up.
like2fly I’ll look into that!
I love your videos, congratulations my captain 👨🏼✈️ excellent explanation of the FMS greetings for Mexico City!!!
You are very well spoken, eloquent and have an excellent lexicon. Congratulations on your videos, I have watched all of them and have inspired me to continue in my studies to become an airline pilot. Since video 1, you have set-up a remarkable quality.
Daniel Aristizabal Thank you Daniel!
Once again Swayne, you've produced another outstanding video! I love following you on your journey in aviation, and stared following since you started at UND. I always look forward to your new videos being released. I will be interviewing with Piedmont on February 3rd, and all your videos keep me looking forward to my career as a pilot. Keep 'em coming! :)
TheInfinitiStig Thank you!!
Wow! Captain Joe must be proud of you
Really nice channel, i'm sure you've inspired hundreds of people to become pilots with your great content. good job!
thanks man ivebeen confused by this little thing for so long
Another good informative video, really interesting!
sirjasonakana appreciate it!
Great video. Very informative👍
Thank you!
Awesome! Can't wait to get there some day!
Let’s go.....We got another Swayne vid......so hype
Thanks Bryan!
Low time private pilot that will soon follow a path similar to yours…Thanks for all of your content. You answer every question that I come up with reference commercial flying.
another great video thanks
Most of my flying was done without these. Without anything more than a handheld GPS which was much more valuable than the WWII surplus ADF we also had.
I scoured CZcams for a video on FMS and it came up pretty short at the time several years ago when I transitioned to a glass cockpit. Even how the scratchpad and line select buttons was difficult.
But like almost anything we learn by doing. Videos like this really help as well.
Crew Scheduler for a regional here. Love your stuff!
Wow. That was overwhelming. Lol. Thanks Swayne. You’re the man!
Great video! Lots of good explanations.
Thanks Elvis!
Thanks Swayne
Great video as always Swayne, but I was really wanting to know where the Chemtrails additive options and deployment menu was located in the FMS :p
Lol
@@SwayneMartinPilot I have watched your videos from the very beginning Swayne and have enjoyed watching you grow personally and professionally. Keep up the fantastic work.
Hi Chris,
We operated a similar FMS in my previous aircraft, the Q400 and there the chemtrails menu was located between the Flat earth data base, and mind control performance page. Have a great day sir.
@@LinkinLoris I can;t like this comment enough! Thanks for the great laugh Edgar!
Oh no! I was taught that it was the red button just to the right of the ejection seat switch.
lol
Yes! Keep em coming
Will do!
I like how you blend in music with your presentation
Very very nice vid bro I always wondered how it works. I never knew that they go so much nice vid the vid was the one I actually waited for nice thx
Great videos !!
Have a safe flight always captain.❤️
The CDU layout if a little different but the software looks very similar to the Dash 8 Q400. Very nice video as always, Swayne. Thanks again!
Keep going..best of luck👍👍
Thank-you for your information....😀
Superb video!
There are not many videos on CZcams i just press the replay button at the end, but it seems every time you upload it happens. truly amazing videos and incredibly motivational and inspirational to see what you have achieved at your age. I hope one day i will end up just like you.
Colin Green Thanks Colin! You’ll be here soon man
@@SwayneMartinPilot I wish you the best of luck and opportunity in your aviation career, you deserve the best.
Beast of a video! I myself hold the Boeing FMS style you find on the 737 classic series or the 757, 767, 747-400 and all that as the best FMS. The Universal you guys use is pretty cool once you know how to use it though
Yeah I’ve never heard anything good about the universal FMS from any of the guys I’ve flown with coming from Classic Dashes and older Beechcraft products.
I love the Collins Proline series. It takes a lot of getting used to but once you know it it’s very good. It most closely represents the FMS on larger aircraft.
Like the VNAV profiles. All the charted restriction on the STAR are already inputted... we just verify them during planning and approach briefing. The FMS will create a VNAV Path to cross all of the charted restrictions as smooth as possible.. and if we get an unrestricted descent we can do Vertical Direct which will plot a VNAV path at a constant descent angle to a hard altitude we’ve inputted at a fix.
Of course the flip side of this is all these young kids who forget how to calculate a 3:1 descent or an appropriate descent rate to use when on vectors after an open STAR. Some try and use the ILS glide path to guide them.. which means 2000+ FPM on a 90 degree intercept trying to catch it.. then blowing through it and dragging it in at 2000 ft AAE on a 14 mile final.
I use the same FMS on King Air 315. Very easy to operate it.
Great post Swayne.
Thank you!
Loved that 737 max I saw keep up the great work
I hope your company never discourages you from making these videos. You represent the business as a calm and prepared professional
Not at all! I actually went through months of planning to make these videos happen. They're all approved and coordinated with the company!
@@SwayneMartinPilot Is United the same?
@@SwayneMartinPilot And you’re my favorite pilot CZcamsr
@@SwayneMartinPilot I’m twelve years old and you inspired me to be a pilot when I was ten so thanks!🙏
Your videos are mind blowing for me as an Italian teenager that wants to become a pilot and move to the US, really thank you from the heart ❤️👍
Just a question. If pilots don’t like the weather they see on their route or at dep/arr airports, do they have the discretion to cancel/delay or is that all up to dispatch. Really enjoyed the video man!
ah, nice! The embraer fms keypad looks long lol
Hi Swayne! Great video as always. I noticed at around 1:55 that you're putting ABE into the FMS as your arrival airport. I'm a student pilot based out of an uncontrolled airfield about 5 miles southwest of ABE, just outside the class C. I've done the majority of my controlled airfield training at ABE. Small world! Keep up the great work!
Allentown is a good spot! One of our longer flights on the E145 out of Chicago!
Swayne Martin welcome to ABE! You’re correct, it’s a gem of an airport. Worked there as a teenager on the line crew of the FBO while I got my private ticket over 50 years ago.
Amazing video like always. I remember you from your early days a few years back. You've progressed a lot overtime. Keep up the great work 👍
Thank you!
Would you be willing to do a video on all the gear that you bring on each flight? As well as what flight bags you use. How to keep your clothes so clean. Stuff like that would be great.
Very light brief FMS over view.
08turboSS yep there’s a lot more of course!
