  • Sharpening a chainsaw is time consuming when you have 20 acres of trees. I decided to try out an electric chainsaw sharpener to put the edge back on my Stihl 34 (20") and my Stihl 038 Magnum 2 (32"). It's faster and more consistent than sharpening by hand, AND it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
    You could pay someone to sharpen your chains, but the cost builds up quickly, plus the time it takes to bring it to the shop.

    I got this sharpener. After making a few mistakes, then I figured out how to operate it. I am very pleased with this machine.

    Thanks for the review. I have looked at this sharpener in the store and wondered how well it worked. Now I know!

    Thank you very much for the review! You can’t go wrong with that price! It beats the sharpening by hand! 👍👍🥲

    Be sure to look at the Stihl 2 in 1 Sharpener, it does both teeth and depth gauges at the same time. It's probably faster than the powered sharpener, to do both at the same time. With a stump vise, you can quickly sharpen in the woods - with no power needed.

    I just bought one on a whim while in town. I've been hand filing for 20 years, and I can't even approach the level of sharpness this grinder puts on a tooth. Even new chains aren't as sharp. From now on, I'm only using a file for 1 or 2 stroke touch-ups in the field. My only complaint is the soft phillps screws that hold the wheel cover on. I doubt they'll survive more than 2 wheel changes before camming out. I'll see if I can find some hardened Allen screws to replace them with.

      Harbor freight screws and switches are always suspect, but luckily they are the easiest to fix and replace

      Glad you enjoyed it! I try and keep up with the channel, but unfortunately I have a lot of other things happening in "real" life right now. I am hoping to have more time in the near future.

    Is there any wheel dressing involved? Do you just replace the wheel when it loses the radius? Or? Thank you.

    • @innerbarkoutdoors
      @innerbarkoutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah when the wheel gets too small and slow for your liking. The abrasive wheels are inexpensive to replace

    I've got one of these. It does an incredible job of sharpening, and is fast. But..... I only use it on my saw I keep around the house. Due to how this machine sharpens a blade, you can't touch up the blade with a file if you're out and about.

      If you do multiple light touches rather than persistent grind, the temper of tooth is not altered & hand file able to be done in field.

    Years ago a landscaper friend said this is realy good but you only get like one sharpening out of a chain with it. DO you think it was the way he was using it or it inherently cuts more material?

    • @innerbarkoutdoors
      @innerbarkoutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      It's easy to take off too much, but if you just take off a sliver of material and go slow so you don't ruin your heat treat, I think you will get plenty of sharpenings out of it. It's not as conservative as a hand file, but I'd reckon you'd get 1 or 2 less when compared to doing it by hand.

    It seemed like you were taking off a lot of metal. I'd think you only need to "kiss it" lightly to get a good edge.

      @innerbarkoutdoors  Před rokem +1

      I took off only enough to get past the rolled edges of the worst teeth. Gotta keep it even Steven.
