The three things a Cummins fears most:
    1. A Headwind
    2. A Hill
    3. A Cat Engine

I just replaced a 3406E with a brand new 6NZ. In a 98 Pete 379. Cat still makes the 6NZ as a replacement engine for older trucks. The 3406E that was replaced spun a rod bearing and needed a crank. Just the crank alone was $11,000. The brand new 6NZ was $53,000. With today's prices, you can't rebuild your old engine for that and you get a 3 year warranty.

I agree with you 100% on Cat reliability. I have a glider kit with a 2WS Cat, which has 1,047,000 miles on a platinum overhaul and my oil analysis comes back as clean as it was when the motor was freshly overhauled. Very happy with this motor.

I've got a 1985 Autocar with a 3406B Cat 616,000 miles on truck and motor that I've had since new. The engine has never been touched the oil pan and heads have never been off even turbo is original have only changed a couple starters, alternators and one water pump in 39 years. Doesn't burn or leak oil. Just drive it to truck shows since retiring.

I recently bought a brand new w900 with a 605 x15 I'm impressed with the power hopefully it's as reliable as the b model cat in my 359. I've been subscribed to your channel for a while . Watching your videos inspired me to save for a while and buy a new truck instead of a used one. Thanks for the great content

Dave, i cant help it think you also helped to keep the power of the engine working.
You drive it like it likes it, low rpm causing them pistonrings to seal up better creating more torque than if you would rev it waaay high.
And the oilchanges also help it prevents premature wear and the engine will work flawlessly.
As for me in The Netherlands, i once got a Curbsniffer that was thrashed high rpm all the time... no torque it only worked at high rpm, this curbsniffy was the replacement for a day due to my own Curbsniffer being in the garage for maintenance.... Exactly the same model and same engine/tranny... Mine driven low rpm and full trottle at low rpm was much stronger and had a wide powerrange.... The Thrashed one did 5mpg, mine did 12mpg. (not to get started about the dpf trouble that thrashed one had all the time due to oilusage)
Both Curbsniffers where MAN TGS 400hp's with the small single turbo D15 (9L)
    Greetz from the Netherlands

Was driving a Mercedes-Benz cabover in South Africa long ago with a reefer trailer. The truck really struggled one day... When I stopped to take a break, I noticed I was driving into a strong headwind 🙄 Luckily the wind was so strong. Otherwise, the truck may very well have overheated from running with my foot flat on the floor all day🙄🙄

I agree about maintenance contributing to reliability. I'm a cummins guy. I like cat but found parts cost can't compete.

Years ago I found something that brought my Cat to its knees: I was driving a Mack R754, with a 3406, pulling a loaded gravel dump trailer. All of a sudden it felt like it was losing power, and I had to keep dropping gears. I thought maybe it was starving for air or fuel but no smoke and it seemed to be making boost but for some reason I just kept slowing down. Eventually I came to a stop and even first gear wouldn’t move it. Sitting still there the truck was making a rocking motion and weird shaking. I looked up and realized I was in the middle of a tornado and the wind was so strong pushing on the front of the truck and flat face of the dump trailer it stopped me cold. Luckily the wind was coming straight at me or it would have flipped me for sure. The tornado passed, cleared a huge swath of forest behind me and then it was over and I carried on. Crazy!

CAT got tired of chassing the emissions standards and quit building truck]engines.
CURIOUSLY, CAT is a leader in EV off highway electric power and jobsite recharge
    solutions.

Dave, I’m gonna disagree with you about one thing: you said that Cat engines were cheap to fix as compared to Cummins and Detroit? Are you kidding me?
I hope you are, ‘cause Cat engines were everything else but cheap !
Up to and including the N14 series, Cummins, with the 855 inch^3 NTC Big Cam of ‘76, Big Cam II of ‘79, Big Cam III of ‘84, Cummins sold the most class 8 truck engines throughout the 1970s and 1980s in North America for a reason: affordable, cheap parts and service which were available in the most remote places allover the country, acceptable reliability, decent performance and the darn thing made you money, right?
Even if Caterpillar was considered by many enthusiasts as the pinnacle of diesel engines quality, you always had to pay a hefty price for that nice yellow cat purring under the hood of your truck and it always had it’s share of problems too, things like spun bearings, failing injectors, leaking head gaskets, cracked heads, etc.
Anywho, the best truck and the best engine is the one that gets the job done and makes you the most money with the least amount of investment. The rest is just emotional gobbledygook !
PS: Dave, lets be realistic, nothing got you over the hill pulling a multi-axle RGN + jeep + booster hauling a D-11 dozer back in the day faster than a 600hp KTA Cummins with 5&4 Spicer boxes behind it and big detroit lockers 48K 4:11 rears, or a bit later in the mid ‘80s a Mack Super-Liner or an Ultra-Liner COE with a Mack E9 V8 and the matching Mack drivetrain behind it.
And one more thing, the 2WS prefix 14.6 liter Cats were much better than the 6NZ. I preferred the 70 pin ecm 1MM 15.8 liter
