  • The number of shoplifting offences recorded by police in England and Wales has risen to the highest level in 20 years.
A total of 430,104 offences were logged by forces last year, up more than a third (37%) on the 315,040 recorded in the previous 12 months to December 2022.
The figure is the highest since current records began in the year to March 2003, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which described the latest increase as “notable”.
Former police superintendent Leroy Logan joins TalkTV’s JJ Anisiobi to discuss this further.

The man who made New York a safe city said to police officers "If I see you ignoring a crime, no matter how minor, you're fired"

Sure nothing to do with Police taking less and less action against crime. It’s all cost of living, that’s nothing more than an excuse for lack of effort to do the job.

Nothing to do with the cost of living. Many people have always been hard up but didn't throw all decency out of the window and just decide to take what they wanted. It's the total lack of discipline in first schools, then policing, that's to blame for this.

Crime Watch gone. Mugshots got too colourful for the BBC and the Guardian. Poor people should NOT be blamed for crime. No one in my road had money in the 1960s and 70s. Crime was very rare, but white peole were very common.

As a child i would have been belted from one end of town to the other by my mum if i had done anything like like steal from a shop. Then afterwards she would have reported me to the police herself.
Back then, growing up in the 80s, my parents wouldn't make excuses for me or defend me if i had ever done anything wrong and i clearly knew that was their position.
Today there are too many parents whi defend the bad behaviour of their children. Maybe it's a reflection of the parents themselves.
