  • 3 models from Set 9 1970-1977. Meccanograph (9.2), Bulldozer (9.4), Travelling gantry crane (9.15). 1974 price £31.65. There is a separate video of the Meccanograph in operation. Mistake! The crane has no string steps.

    Man, I love meccano!
Had all kinds of sets when i was a kid and still have them.
My nephews loved building stuff with them when they were kids too!

Thanks for posting this Brian. Great introduction into what's possible with the no. 9 set. Sent a link to a friend who's interested in getting into the hobby.

I do, and a lot more. At the SELMEC exhibition recently I had two set 10 models constructed at the same time, the gantry crane and lifting shovel. In 2007 I only had something a bit past a set 9. Some of the SELMEC members must have several set 10 sets given the size of their models.

@newspaniard The set 8 models turntable I made had to be totally rebuilt for this, my first use of large toothed quadrants, excellent. I had trouble with some of the replica parts. The double angle strips are slightly too long and I had to replace them with normal strips and angle brackets.
At last I have a Meccano sets playlist complete, though I will add two more set 10 models and some 4EL models. Some 1978 models should also show soon.

@ MECCNUTTY, so you actually do have a set 10? or not? I noticed that you have videos all the way up to a set 9 and quite an extensive inventory of parts.

@laphant1 I know you would have to buy parts from abroad. However can you get the current sets there?

I wonder how many Set 9s were sold? I can't help but think that if Set 9 was within your budget, you'd be able to afford Set 10 so you may as well get that.

Set 10 cost 5 times more than set 9. By today's standards set 10 was about £1500.

@@MECCNUTTY Really? I had no idea it was such a big leap.

I dont know what you mean by the current sets. Over here in the States, it is called Erector and is completely different from the Erector of the 1950's-1960's. Modern "Erector" sets were at one time available here. However they were rather boring looking and soon the sets disappeared from the store shelves. Also Lego and K'Nex have a much larger fan-base around here. As for myself, I have grown to love Meccano and build all the time. Most of my acquisitions are from E-bay, which is expensive.

This was last sold in 1979. They are available on Ebay. You are talking between £500-£700 for this. You can also get it from www.meccanoman.co.uk for £400. This is a respectable seller.
