  • This is a slightly scaled down version of an automatic transmission in the June-Sept 1976 Meccano engineer publication made by Robin Schoolar. It uses both input speed and load to decide which gear to use.
    From the motor to the output shaft 1st is 36:1, 2nd 27:1 and 3rd 18:1.
    There is a video link at the end describing the constant mesh mechanisms.

    I couldn't agree with you more. Additionally the demise of decent construction toys in favour of quick assembly kits. Children need to learn about patience and proper achievement. Meccano France are starting what looks like a decent plastic Meccano range shown on the MeccanoToys channel. I hope it does well.

    Tricky. This is not a model that you can buy from a shop as such. The parts can be bought at the meccanoman com website. The magazine to build it may be available on ebay. However this is going to set you back quite a bit, the brass parts are expensive.

    Can you explain how these ratchet mechanisms work, and how they keep the gears engaged? Thanks!

      +Brian Meccano Leach Thanks, that explains exactly what a ratchet is and how it's made from Meccano. But how does this help with the shifting between gears? I think I understand: when the mechanism switches into a higher gear, it is still driving the lower gear, but because of the ratchet those gears are simply being pulled along. Is that right?

    • @MECCNUTTY
      @MECCNUTTY  Před 8 lety

      +Daan Haeyen I don't rightly know. All I can suggest is you buy the magazine where the model came from. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MECCANO-ENGINEER-No-12-JUNE-SEPT-1976-FINAL-ISSUE-IN-EXCELLENT-CONDITION-/182002801956. The explanation is difficult but when a high gear is engaged the lower gears freewheel.

      To the best of my knowledge the instructions are not available on the web. However it is in the June-Sept 1976 Meccano engineer publication. Maybe you could find that on ebay.

      I can do but it does mean rebuilding the model. I would suggest you try to find the article for the junior engineer magazine Jun to Sept 76. It should be on the Web somewhere.

      Set di costruzioni Bral (Il Costruttore Meccanico/Bral) Il Costruttore Meccanico era il nome dato da Bral al suo sistema costruttivo. In seguito fu chiamato Il Costruttore Bral. È stato realizzato in Italia dai primi anni '20 al 2004. Il sistema può essere suddiviso in due fasi principali. Nella prima le serie erano numerate da 000 a 4. Successivamente sono state rinumerate da 1 a 9 con alcune serie aggiuntive aggiunte nella sequenza.
