I must say, Mike, I'm so impressed by your continuous creativity. Oh, when it flew off the lathe and you said you'd put it to firewood, well...I was telling you: "No, Mike! Mail it to me, I'll treasure your cast off!" But then, you changed direction on the fly and made a tennan. I bow to thee!😊
Haha thanks Audie 😂
Awesome work as always. Glad that you posted this video instead of abanding it. It is good to see the mishaps and how to fix them. Keep up the great work.👽
Thanks mate, I much prefer to keep things as real as possible
A fine example of making lemonade when life hands you a lemon.
Great results .
And I admire your ability to remain calm under a bit of adversity.
Thank you very much! Life is too short to get stressed over a piece of wood 😀
Could make a cool candle holder. I'm imaging the resing flowing red with the candle. Great to see your work around with the issues you had.
Not a bad idea Janes, although that is up to it's new owner as it's now sold!
Just have to say real quick before you get started ... those are some Pretty colors! Can't wait!!!
haha thanks
Perseverance is one of the greatest traits for success. You certainly demonstrated yours on this bowl.
Thanks, a sense of humour also helps 😂
Thanks for posting this - it highlights mishaps can happen to us all - but the way you recovered the project was amazing
Thanks Ian, I learned a while ago that the best way to improve is to always finish your project, even if it's gone wrong. You learn so much when you have to figure out how to fix something.
I really enjoy your channel. Thank you for the great content!
You are more than welcome, all the best, Mike
Absolutely lovely, and a good recovery. I can see that being used with an LED flicker candle inside as a holiday decoration.
Oh yes! That is a great idea! 😃
Great to see a project have a fail moment. As a newbie turner, yt is so very full of the successes, yet I learn much more from watching peeps problem solve. TY🙏
Then keep watching Fiona as I always show mistakes and always talk about what I did wrong and how to sort. Thanks for watching and welcome to the hobby. Mike
Fun experiment. It is nice when you can just play with an idea and not have many expectations or *need* a finished project.
You are so right Susan, it is great just being able to play with something just for the sake of it. 😀
I love the finished product!
Your color selection for the epoxy is spot on. Very striking!
Thanks Louisa 😁
Hi Mike.
Well, this was certainly different, and kudos to you for persevering.
When you had glued the broken piece back to the base but it wouldn't hold, I thought there is no way this video is ending with Mike not completing this! 😲 And you didn't disappoint.
I thought it would look good with tealight or LED lights. Wonder what the new owner has done? 🤔
Thanks for keeping your channel jam packed with entertainment, learning, laughing and heart stopping moments 🙃
Haha thanks Fiona, I know the guy that bought it so I'll ask him what he did with it 😀
I like this little bowl. It has a nice shape and could look sweet with some silk flowers in it. Or put fairy lights into it and I'll bet it shines really pretty.
Thanks, I'm just glad I got it to the finishing post lol 😀
That was very creative. I enjoyed watching you turn that bowl and workaround the chucking problem.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it 😀
Great fun to watch, and useful to see how you dealt with the problems (and explained why it happened. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Rachel, this was a whole lot of fun 😁
I am so glad to not be the only one that happens to! You made it look nice nonetheless, Mike!
Thanks my friend. These things happen to us all, it's just part of the hobby.
Fabulously inventive recovery from what seemed like a vase with a hidden bowling ball ambition. Very well done, Mike!
Haha thanks that is a great way of describing it 😂
Whoops 😮, I love your determination to get a finished article, brilliant
Thanks, when you give up you stop learning 😀
I was happy to see you continue to try to make a bowl even with the struggles. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks Mary, I like to do all I can to finish a project, does not always work but I'll always try 😁
Fun project! Love the star design on it!
Thanks Susannah 😀
I bet nobody ever accused you of not being persistent. It was certainly entertaining
Thanks Steve, no way was I giving in lol
HAHA! Thank you for leaving in the bit with the spiderwebs from the glue gun. It drives me crazy to see people do it perfectly. I would still be pulling threads off of me. Never have any luck with those things. Great job for what you were using. Hard to know what to expect from a piece of wood like that. Always enjoy your videos! Great job again Mike!
😂 you are welcome William, I hate using glue guns, it just goes everywhere, the stick gets stuck and refuses to feed through etc..... Anyway, glad you enjoyed it and glad to know I'm not the only one with glue gun issues. 😃
I tend to notice them long after the fact, getting entangled, as I cross the room, haha 😆
Very interesting idea! I love all the crazy experiments different Channels try out as it gives me ideas for future projects of my own. Keep inspiring me!
Glad you enjoyed it Matt, I'll do my best
think this is very exciting! thanks for more great content!!!
Thanks for watching Dee, more to come 😃
Well done for trying this out, I think like you I've been looking at them and wondering the same. Not got into Epoxy but may give it a go seeing how you did this. It has it's own special look and persistence clearly paid off in the end. Thanks for helping us see the drama before finding out for ourselves.
You are welcome Gary, please let me know how you get on if you give it a go. All the best, Mike
Friend you are very talented ... Congratulations on what you do !!!
Thank you very much
That turned out very nice! I like it even though it gave you so much trouble!
Thank you Gloria and I'm glad to say it's found a new owner 😊
Beautiful result ❤
Thank you! 😊
This is pretty. Cool. I'm happy you were able to save it.
Me too! There was no way I was letting this one not get finished 😃
I love your perseverance.
Haha thanks so much 😃
It turned out good despite the mishap. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!😃
Hi mike, sorry I had to reply this way (having trouble with my email) but yes I have spoken to a few of your new viewers and like me they are impressed and excited at your program's especially your detailed explanation but are finding it hard to find some of your early shows , this is a great example, brilliant.
Thanks John, if you go to my channels home page and cluck on videos you should be able to see them all. Let me know how you get on.
Great work by the Swedish Chef!
Thank you very much!
I love what you did with a bit of firewood would look great with a candle in it.
Thanks Shirley, I think you are 100% right!
You did it well didn't give up and made a good job 👏
Thanks Trevor, I just hate to give up on a project 😀
That was a very cool experiment. I see those logs around from time to time and it would have never dawned on me to try that.
Haha, those bundles of firewood could be next lol.
Your work is amazing
Thanks so much Stuart 😀
You do like a challenge Mike lol, nice work, you definitely get points for perseverance.
I certainly so and I hate giving up even more lol 😀
Great channel! Great bowl!
Thank you very much Kevin 😀
It tried to stop you. You did well getting around the issues. Great job!
You need to shout a bit louder next time, Thanks Doug
Great idea...Nice save.
Thank you! 😊
Very intersting project , the fact that there is no bleeps when it left the lathe 👍 if that had of been me there would have been an awful lot of editing 🤣, nice looking bowl I love it ..
Haha, thanks Jon, I'm usually quite calm about these things 😂
Another awesome video
Thank you 😂
Glad you enjoyed it Mike, more to come I hope 😀
I have been looking at those swedish logs myself and wondering if it can be done, you have now confirmed it for me and I will be having a go myself soon. Amazing work by the way...
Thanks Richard, please let me know how you get on, all the best, Mike
Wow, glad you were able to rescue this piece. When you mounted with jaws in external mode, I was concerned the soft grain of the wood may not be strong enough, and in a short time we found the answer.
A very interesting experiment. A LOT of resin though, so likely the cost of the resin was much more than the torch log.
We do not get these logs in the US. I wonder what the machine looks like which punches the shape in the logs.
Well done.
Dave.
Morning Dave, must admit I have wondered about the shape of the machine as well, does it cut them all in one go or bit by bit. Yes there was a lot of resin, far more than I would have liked and in cost certainly more than the torch. I had some old resin I need to use up so did not feel too bad about it.
All the best
Mike
I’ve heard of the Swedish torch, never saw one for sale before though. I live across the pond from you though. What a fantastic idea. And who could argue with the results. You always continue to impress me sir.
Thanks mate, they are pretty big over here are you can find them all over.
I like turning weird things to see what happens, I once turned a hollow mahogany egg but instead of hollowing it from the end I went into the side and hollowed out the large end of the egg befroe turning the shape, making the finished egg weirdly off balance and point heavy when you hold it. it also sits a bit point down so I made a stand to hide that so its even more surprising when you pick it up.
I had to make a chuck to hold it for the initial hollowing then turn it 90degrees to shape the egg. It was great fun to do but hollowing an accurate ball in an off center piece of mahogany was quite challenging.
Resin has made a huge difference to what can be turned and the kinds of projects that can be attempted, things like this are fascinating so thanks for sharing ...I like it.
Wow sounds amazing! Thanks 👍
Very well saved Mike and a good final result..... I love turning hollow forms....
Thanks so much Steve, I appreciate you sticking with the channel all this time 😃
@@MikeHolton I love this channel. My favourite turning show and I eagerly look forward to your postings. I also love watching your turning career and your videography progress. Keep up the good work....
@@steveriggsartandanimation8473 Thanks Steve, the videography is certainly improving as well as the editing skills. I did a bit of animation and editing for my masters but not had much chance to use it till now. I should ask for help from my brother-in-law who is a director/film maker and my sister who was an animator for film and tv for many years before becoming a lecturer but I like to try and sort out my own problems and progress in a way that feels right for me and the channel. All the best, Mike
This turned out cool Mike I was scrolling around Utube and stumbled on this turning I think it looks cool we don't see Swedish logs here in Canada I really like the way it looks Blessings
THanks! A fun project and glad I manage to get it to the end 😀
I like seeing how you resolved a minor setback. Yes, I have lost bowls the same way. Sometimes I remount, sometimes they heat the house.
Haha, I was determined to not let it fulfil it's potential of providing warmth 😃
Well Mike, that was an adventure! By coincidence, I came in from my workshop because I had a 'mishap' and decided it would be safer to try again tomorrow when hopefully I will be concentrating on what I am doing. So I tuned into your video for some inspiration, and what do you do?? - ably demonstrated that "mistakes happens to all of us", which made me feel a bit better! I can't say I will be following your lead and buying one of these logs to turn, though. I liked an earlier comment about putting a spiky cactus in it, that would have been very appropriate. Well done for selling it! Enjoyable as always, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks David, these things happen to all of us and I would much prefer to show it than just hide it. Funny that you had a problem just before 😃, I have a bag of unhaveable bowls.
Great work. I never thought about turning one of those. Lol
Give it a go, I would love to see someone give it a try. 😃
I actually like the way this one turned out. Not bad for a mass produced fire torch
Thanks Jeffrey, I must admit, it does have a certain charm about it.
I've always giggled at the cost of those things but never thought to turn one, very unique.
Thanks must admit, I would never buy one to set fire to 😃
nice to see some of the tribulations of wood turning. Excellent recovery though!
Thanks Rob, just keeping it real. These things happen to me as much as everyone else 😁
Knew you could fix it!! Very pretty.
Thank you! 🤗
Hi Mike 10 out of 10 for perseverance 😀
I'll take that, thanks Ian
Wow... that one was rough!! But its still came out a nice little interesting lil cup!! Great job making it work an finishing!!!❤
Thanks 👍,this was a lot of fun 😊
@@MikeHolton lol fantastic idea! Great job!!😍
Festive holiday bowl/vase!
Haha yes it could be 😀
Nice to see something that was made for burning used for a better purposes
Thanks Gary, although some may say the end result should have been burned lol 😂
Hi Mike, no idea what a Swedish Torch Log is, unusual design, not for me but interesting watching you turn. Thanks for sharing
Hi Jim, it's a bit like an outdoor camping stove. If you search on CZcams you will soon see what they do. I appreciate you watching, all the best, Mike.
Been watching for some time now. I’ve bought one of these to burn it. Watching your video, makes me wonder now, why we burn them. It actually finished off better than I first thought it would. 👍 (Commenting to also be in with a chance of the competition 😉)
Thanks Harvey and I appreciate your comment whatever the reason. Good luck with the competition.
Quite nice! Certainly unique, has a Native American Pottery vibe, would love to see one done with contrasting primary colors, say yellow & blue, or simply black & white, also think it would an excellent canvas for inlay.
Thanks, this just started off as a bit of fun but I do like it.
Nice work, and good to See, that these fails not only my Problems are😂
Thanks and fails are common in wood turning, don't worry 😀
Since I started watching this evening, I see you've hit 30,000 subs - congrats! I actually love this project, pity the quality of the wood gave you issues 😊
OMG you are right, I have been at work all day and trying to catch up with messages since I had not even noticed 😂
its kool in a strange way ... i love it
lol thanks Greg
Well you’ve got tenacity
First time viewer who… is going to view some more.
Thanks Peter, I do tend to take on projects I wish I had never started but I'll always see them though. Welcome to the channel 😃
Even with the oops , I think the bowl turned out great !
Thanks Jon, this one seems to be liked by many 😃
Thanks for the experiment. I have one lying around here, too, since a year, when I bought it for my daughter's birthday, and didn't get to burn it. And for the last weeks, every time I looked at it sitting there in my garage, I had been wondering if I should take it as a challenge on my lathe. Yours seemed to be made out of birch, mine seems to be from pine or spruce, I'm not sure yet. I should take a closer look. And now I'm sitting here, wondering even more...
Haha, go for it, I've already demonstrated the worse that can happen 😃
I've often wondered about those logs myself, like many i expect. I got one and it burned perfectly down to a little black crumbly "bowl". I left it for the fairies.😅
Did I comment on the giveaway? I'm sure I would have if I've watched it. Maybe I'll go have a wee look right now.
Good luck to All 🏴🤔😊🏴
Hi Charles, I'm pretty sure you were in the giveaway 😀
Love it
Thanks Brenda
I really like the outcome despite the bottom exploding!
Thanks Allen 😃
Hi Mike, Apparently like many I have looked at these torch logs, ( Yes we have them in the U.S. you just have to keep your eyes open. ) & wondered f if it was worth the effort. Your project turned out well and has provided some good insight. I always seem to learn something and this time I learned I can use an epoxy resin without the pressure pot. ( I hope that was listed in the usual place " below ". ) Working with resin is interesting but I'm just not willing to make the investment for all of the acoutrements that go with the process. It's always interesting watching you work. I might just get one of these and work it just for the hell of it. LOL. Note to self; Tenon not a recess... LOL.
Cheers,
Bill Riley
Haha thanks Bill, I don't have a pressure pot and at present I have no desire to buy one. As long as you get a resin that can degas itself you are generally fine. I've never had any issues with any of the resin bowls I've made. 😃
Also think this would make a great Christmas dec, using silver/gold resin
Hi Fiona, that is a very good idea, don't tell my wife or I'll have to make another 😃
Determination. Thanks Mike for showing us that sometimes it is good to persevere, that there is always hope in the right circumstances.
I was going to comment on another of your videos along the lines of; you always make beautiful pieces of the highest quality and finish never leaving any stone unturned to get the best out of the blank, yet do you ever consider perverting your own ethos? About making something much more rough and less finished and in that forced opposition and tension maybe you can find some new truths...
Then I watch this and here you are indeed starting with an utterly inappropriate blank and exposing its flaws and its beauty and your creativity to us. Jaw droppingly good.
Hi Martin, thanks indeed! I'm still relatively new to turning so my creative journey is still in it's infancy. I have so many ideas I want to try the only problem I have is finding the right wood and time to do it. But we will get there and there is certainly no rush. All the best, Mike
@@MikeHolton Mike. You seem like a seasoned pro to me already...your videos are fascinating and so well structured and explained.
@@MikeHolton Do you know Andy Coates from Cobwed Crafts BTW? He doesn't do CZcams but he loves a rant on Twitter and he makes some amazing things.
@@loopinnerthe Haha, thanks so much, I've only been turning for 2 1/2 years but have been teaching for the last 22. I work hard on making the videos as good as I can, I don't script them so the style you see now has evolved over the months I've been running the channel. And my editing skills and production ability has just been plain old hard work and determination.
@@loopinnerthe I've seen his work but I don't know him personally
The bowl reminds me of the Walmart symbol. Love this🎉
Haha yes it does 😁
If you turned it top down and went for a bowl you might have gotten the star pattern to form in the bowl. Would look like six slices held together by epoxy, with the rings in the wood for added effect ❤
Great idea! Thanks 😀
You're a far more patient man than I am... I would have chucked it. There's plenty of other wood turners on YooToob making glorified firewood anyway.
Haha thanks, I don't like to give up 😂
Love it. The one side looks like an eyeball.
Haha yes it does 😀
To be very honest, I really like how this one turned out. I also think its a very nice little project. Great video.
Thank you very much my friend, It's already sold so that's two of you that liked it 😃
@@MikeHolton im happy for you. If shipping to South Africa wasnt too expensive, i also might have tried to buy it. Lol, sometimes someone else’ pieces just seem better than your own 🤣
@@PotgieterWoodturning I know just what you mean, there are a few turners I follow on Instagram who's work I would just love to own.
@PotgieterWoodturning hi fellow South African.
I said the same thing to Mike, with the exchange rate it's a bit out of my reach, sadly.
But I can dream 🙃
@@fionacrouch1732 very true
Nice recovery on the break.
Thanks Brad, it was close, there was precious little wood left at the bottom.
Nicely done. WOnder if you could part turn it, then fill in the gaps with Milliput to create a different finish??
You could do but it may become a little unsafe to turn.
I can't believe it. About 2 months ago, I said to my wife that I'd never seen anyone turn a Swedish torch. So I did it. But I did it as an end grain turning. Similar "OK" results.
Haha, yeah they are dried quick and not really made to be turned 😀
Sometimes it's fun to experiment and play.🙂
You ae right there Jen, I love trying new things, variety is the spice of life as they say 😃
Could you try to place a light in the bowl? apart from being on theme, it could look quite nice depending on the thickness of the resin.
Hi, you are not the first one to suggest this and now I wish I had before it was sold lol.
What a great idea
Walked past them many times but never crossed my mind to turn one .which is a bit strange as I'm always on the lookout for wood
So after seeing my effort are you going to get one or keep walking past? 😂
@@MikeHolton think I'll keep walking past 🤣
Have to lookout for something else in the shops tho
@@woodys_woodwork I think that's the right move lol
Some Indian ink and red-orange resin and you can do Empire Strikes Back bowls 😅
Haha I would love to make a Death Star one day 😀
Haha I have been there with a project. "It's personal now!"
Hahaha 🤣 yep, it was not going to win
That is definitely different. Good recovery.
Haha, thanks Jason 😃
Nice. Do you put a light in this?
I didn't but I guess you could. Not sure what the new owner is doing with it. 😀
Well I said an "Ah f..." when it went flying for you. Turned out okay in the end, nice save.
Hahaha, thanks Deb! 😂
I think it ended up looking pretty good.
Thanks James ☺️
thought about buying one to cut up for spoon/figure carving, dont think i will now
Ha yeah, the wood is not great.
well that was different I like it
Haha thanks Colin
interesting... the resin dye concept reminds me of some of the indians creative artwork here in the US.
Thanks Irene, that is interesting, it certainly has a raw crafted quality. All the best, Mike
still turned out good I think, would look nice with a light or LEDs in it
Thanks Ant, yes a few people have mentioned that, it's now sold so I'll have to pass a note onto the new owner, I've no intention of making another any time soon 😀
i like this vase a lot! have you already sold it?
Hi , sorry yes it sold on day 1. All the best, Mike
@@MikeHolton I bet it did :)
and thank you, very much!
"...and then I'll add another colour to the tangerine to change it subtly..."
