  • Welcome to this woodturning tutorial where we take red oak and work to turn it into a beautiful bowl. But the all did not go to plan, have you ever had a near death experience? well I think I just did.
This woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects or any other wood turning projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

Whew!! That was a close one!! Oak has a mind of it’s own at times and when turning it, I “doctor” it with thin CA glue, letting it drink all it wants and let it cure naturally without using any accelerator.
DO NOT stay in the shop while the CA glue is curing!! Open the door and turn on a fan to blow out the fumes!! Go eat a meal for about an hour and let it be.🤠
Oak has a mind of it’s own and wants to be the boss sometimes.
Put some thin CA on the bowl and use it in your shop.

Wow, a major brown trouser event. Glad you were not injured by the large flying piece. This did not break where I thought it would break. You are a braver man than I turning this piece with too much checking and large cracks. After the second round of milliput and the bowl moving due to moisture loss, I would have sanded off the milliput and tried to leave the bowl with the non-round shape.
I would not say this is in your hall of shame, perhaps the hall of the pieces which almost caused injury.
I was not expecting a video on Xmas Eve. Thanks.
Trying to survive the bitter artic blast at this end. A power outage yesterday was only a few hours, but with outside temperature 5 deg F (-15 deg C), any power outage is not good. I am thanking the utility workers for getting my power back quickly.

There was a lot of balance at first. One of the negativities I fear most in the lathe is BALANCE. The explosion of the dish is a great misfortune. Your technique of repairing cracks was interesting. 19:38 is a disaster. You brought the bowl back to life with gluing. Working with such trees is always a risk. It was nice of you to find solutions to the problems. All the best.

I wasn’t satisfied with the depth on a project I was working on, got a little too relaxed on my safety protocols, and caught a 1/2 bowl gouge handle directly to my cheekbone. Could have been much worse than the end result. The only things still hurting from that experience is my pride for being so dumb. I hope someone will read this and spare themselves any injury by getting in a hurry.

I watch a lot of wood turning videos, but I’m no expert as such. However life has taught me certain constants, for example, whenever the milliput, or other filler, sets and hardens, turners insist on attacking it immediately with a gouge. Would it not make more sense to take a more delicate approach and sand down the excess filler protrusions first? Especially when the sides are so thin? This would remove the extra leverage and reduce the chances of such an incident. I saw this one coming a mile away.

Wow Mike; Firstly, how come you have time to make a video on Christmas Eve?? - superhuman or what? I have to say that I was begging you to stop quite early on, that piece just didn't look good! I am glad that you survived unscathed to share the experience, I guess we all have a similar story (or 2 or 3 or ...) to tell; scary just the same. Keep up the good work, my friend, and keep safe 🙂

Yeah I should have stopped but that is just my inexperience with wood in this condition. Next time, I may not make the same mistake 😆.

To bad that happened! Were the wood was still wet you could see it was warping as it was drying on the lathe you should have stopped with thicker walls and let it dry slowly for a few weeks in a cool dry no light place then turn it again it's called it's called twice turned there are other procedure's to go through doing twice turned and video's explaining how to do it! Again sorry that your peace broke apart happy turning to you!
(Turn a bowl) has a good video of how to second turn and why 👍

Hi Jon, thanks for your comments. If you watch this video which I released about a week after this one you will see me turn a twice turned bowl from the same log czcams.com/video/hUfCmWGHmt0/video.html
I mention at the start of the video I wanted to turn it thin so it would go misshapen to enhance the feel of the piece (some people like the natural look) but the problems I had with the miliput meant that the first batch failed and I was stuck going down a one way road with no chance to turn back. Hindsight could have saved me but sometimes my vision is a bit cloudy :)
I watch a lot of Turn a Bowl's videos and Jim Spraug, all his bowls are twice turned.
All the best and thanks again for your comments and for watching, Mike
