You talking about how you want to go back to some of the nostalgic books from your childhood hit SO HARD because I've been feeling the exact same way!! I decided to reread the Percy Jackson series because I've been missing it so much and I've loved every moment of it. It's amazing how much you can forget about a book after five years. I'm going to be rereading the Heroes of Olympus next!
(This totally isn't me trying to get Jesse to read HoO heheh-)
Yep, definitely a mood reader here! I can only make priority tbr lists and even then it's really whatever I'm in the mood for at the moment. I tend to prefer something light as a summer read. Anything spooky or set in cold seasons gets automatically pushed to november/december.
You're absolutely right that pjo gives off intense summer vibes. I think all of the books except titan's curse are actually set in the summertime since most of the demigods are only at camp half-blood during the summer and percy goes to various different schools during the school year.
Definitely read Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe, it has the biggest (melancholic) summer vibes! Since i read percy jackson series last year, i plan to continue with the heros of olympus soon!
I've been in the mood for middle grade/childrens books! They're just so light and cozy, which I think is perfect for summertime.
As a fellow mood reader, I definitely get it!
For me, Summer is for MG and light hearted romances (I'll be rereading the Redwall series), Fall is mystery/thriller, Winter is for chunky epic fantasy, and Spring is for not knowing what to read, so staring at the bookshelf in dispair and reading nothing 😅
im a time traveler with a bit of subject matter expert and bookworm!
time traveler:
You're timeless. From your taste in fashion to the titles on your bookshelf, you appreciate the beauty of the past. Your creativity, passion, and curiosity mean you're always daydreaming about other times and places. If they ever invent time travel, you'll be the first in line.(why is this so accurate)
If you want a mystery that's more summery, I would recommend Lady Hardcastle mysteries. I really enjoyed it listening to it and definitely feels more lighter than a murder mystery set during winter. It also just reminds me of taking a vacation to the countryside in the summer so I think you'd enjoy it.
I absolutely love that series!!!
omg you would love Where Our Oceans Meet- it has childhood vibes, it’s fairycore, has Percy Jackson vibes while also being super unique? I feel like it also gives off The House in The Cerulean Sea with wholesomeness, adventure and sort of themes of ableism and found family? ITS SO GOOD.
Sounds great, but I can’t find a book with that title. Who’s the author?
I took the Bookfinity quiz, and these were my results!
#1 Young at Heart
Here's the best part: you're young at heart. Unique, lighthearted, and loyal, you march to the beat of your own drum, and you're okay with that. Your fun-loving spirit and Peter Pan attitude make you the life of the party. Who says growing up has to be boring?
#2 Subject Matter Expert
You're discerning in your tastes and genres, but once you find a subject that catches your attention, you go deep. Whether it's scaling the mountains of Mordor or making the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs, you've got a taste for adventure and exploring other worlds. Brave, loyal, and full of heart - you love to be in the middle of the action. Get excited. There's a lot to explore.
#3 Bookworm
We know what we are, but know not what we may be. You know, however, that that was a Shakespeare quote-- and poorly referenced at that. As a Bookworm, you're all about the classics. Intelligent, curious, and creative - you are a true book lover.
I'm not huge on aesthetics, but I have to appreciate the changing of the headphone pads to match the coloring of your surroundings/clothes.
YOU CRAVING PERCY JACKSON HAS LITERALLY BEEN ME SINCE SCHOOL ENDED 😭❤
My reader type is Modern Romantic: You're a born romantic. You know what you want and aren't afraid to go for it. Your kind, curious, and fun-loving nature shines through in any situation. You take on the world with your nose in a book and your heart on your sleeve. No matter what comes your way, you will create your happy ending!
I'm also a little bit of young at heart and a bookworm type.
Under Lock and Skeleton Key is one of my favorite mysteries, it focuses on a family of stage magicians and it's really fun!!
I’m a mood reader so I’m ready with my notepad to take notes.
house in the cerulean sea is basically adult miss peregrines. you’re gonna love it bestie
percy jackson taking place during the summer for the most part is perfect bro
Legends and lattes feels summery to me. So does The House on the Cerulean Sea, The House with Good Bones, How I Magically Messed Up my life in Four Freakin' Days.
The Spiderwick series is that nostalgic summer time read for me, especially the beyond the Spiderwick books. I still love the first 5 the best though :)
Malibu Rising is amazing but definitely not a shot of happiness. It’s bittersweet and heartbreaking at points. 10/10 do recommend but not if you’re looking for something lighthearted and fun!
I can’t make a tbr this big 😂 it always changes. I just read The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea and I loved it so much! I don’t know if you’ve read it but I highly recommend it, it was very immersive and unique and I loved it so much.
the audiobook for sadie wowowow yes!
The House in The Cerulean Sea is such a lovely read of found family!! I love it so much.
as someone who reread percy jackson last summer and reread heroes of olympus this summer, DO IT!! it’s so fun
I’m the total opposite. 100% a TBR reader, and in April I tried to mood read… by pre-selecting a longer list of books I was most excited to read and choosing from them as I mood-read. 😆 Whatever works!
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware could be a good thriller for the summer! It takes place on a cruise ship, so it definitely has some summery vibes.
I have been watching your videos for well over 7 years, to this day I get so happy when I see you post.... favorite book tuber out there
Tress of the emerald sea and the wicked bargain are two excellent pirate fantasies, and idk something about adventuring on the high seas feels quite summery! I highly recommend!
I really enjoyed Malibu Rising. I think TJR's writing gets better with each book. I also like that her last 4 books (Evelyn Hugo, Daisy Jones, Malibu Rising, and Carrie Soto) are all standalone novels, but there are little strings that link them together to make one TJR universe.
Killers of a Certain Age was a fun read as well.
mood/vibes/season reading for the win🏆📚
I associate the most random things to other random things, it’s super crazy, but it works, so I get ya!
i'm glad we're all feeling like a percy jackson reread at the same time
Every Summer After by Carley Fortune is a MUST for summer reading! The vibes are just...perfection! She's super similar to Emily Henry, so if you enjoy her, you'll probably enjoy Carley.
For The house in the cerulean sea, maybe you can't lower your expectations, but you've got to have the right expectations. Because if you are searching for an epic battle, a story full of plot twists and big magic things... you've got the wrong book XD that's not gonna happen. It is fantasy, but actually it's giving contemporary novel's vibes. It's more about the relationships between the characters and how they fit in the world. Some of them have magic powers, but it's not the point.
Vivid by Ashley Bustamante is such a good summery fantasy book with a great magic system and incredible characters
I'm loving this jesse uploading everyday "era" ❤
I recently read To Kill a Kingdom. It has dark little mermaid vibes and it totally felt like a summer read to me. It has flaws but I thoroughly enjoyed.
Six Crimsom Cranes is a beautiful summer vibed fantasy that I highly recommend!
i just read that duology! i loved it, was so cute
Also some murder mystery books that may interest you are any of the Hannah Swenson murder mystery books. A lot of them have very summery vibes as well great mystery’s and bonus lots of recipes for amazing desserts!
Omg Jesse. PLEASE read Summer's Edge. It has a bit of mystery, death, and unreliable narrating/confusion. It's so fun and it's set at a lake house. Also recommend A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series. So fun and easy to eat right up
A really good and comedic mystery book is The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman! It's about a group of retired folks in a retirement community solving murders together
I love the new vibe in the videos lately! It’s so much more candid and conversational! I love whatever you’re doing with the ✨ mic ✨
slay. love a jesse video to end my day
If you enjoy audiobooks with sound effects, I STRONGLY recommend Graphic Audio productions. My favorite of theirs is ACOTAR. I have only listened to their dramatized adaptations when it comes to ACOTAR and can't go back to the normal audiobooks now. I also recommend their dramatized adaptation of Red Rising. SO GOOD!!
Fantasy wise - maybe the Tea Dragon Society. Cover wise! I haven’t read this series yet but I am looking forward to it
My reading life is suffering cause ✨life✨ 😭 teaching high school science as a day job and doing Masters online during the evenings- honestly watching your videos is keeping the reader in me sane at this point so thanks for that, bestie 😭
Malibu rising is the best summer read, i read it at the beach last year and the sunburn happened 😂 but the story just gripped me ya know?!
SADIE ALONGSIDE THE AUDIOBOOK IS FRICKIN AWESOME. It was my last read for last year, and I couldn't believe I didn't pick it up for so long. Absolutely go ahead and read it nowwwwwww.
Good luck with you’re reading!!
I love Sadie!! I’ve read it three in the past 5 years and I always find something new! I really hope you get around to it and love it
Also, I'll leave a tip for series that has been working for me. If possible, read 2 books right away, as in, if you start a series and love the 1st book start reading the 2nd one right away, if possible. If I don't have the book I make a note to get it. I started Percy Jackson in January and read the first two. When I continue (soon) I'll read the 3rd and 4th. I've been doing this to actually have some progress on the series I have started and it's been working out so far.
Stop rereading the books in the series you want to catch up on. Bold I know, but trust me.
You sound like me, so what I do might help: I only read recaps until I get to the one I haven’t read yet and then I read. So if I’m seven books in and I can’t remember? Reading seven recaps and then getting stuck into book eight. Saves me from getting fatigued by the series and not continuing. Good luck! Obviously this isn’t always an option, but I recommend it when it is.
I just finished Killers of Certain Age and really enjoyed it! I'm a seasonal mood reader too and it is definitely ✨summer vibes✨ For a nostalgic(ish) fantasy read, I recommend the Fractured Fable series by Alix E. Harrow! It's a duology of fairytale retelling novellas that are really quick & fun. I loved them!
Summery thriller type book - The Castaway
THE MID-SNEEZE PLS
Not really a vibes mood reader, but for summer, I often try to pick a theme of book to focus on.
This year I'm trying to focus on SF. Mostly because my brain decided "Hey! Let's read this nine book series" and I'm hoping to get through it before my mood shifts again.
I suspect for summery mystery vibes, you'll do best exploring the cozy side of the genre. Not a genre I read often, so no actual recommendations.
I remember loving The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland back when I read it, but I remember the last book coming out several years back, so now I have to check if I missed something.
Perfect you're reading Malibu Rising after Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones! They all connect loosely :)
reading vibes instead plans is a complete mood
I just finished The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James. It’s a murder mystery, ghost story thriller, and the second book by this author. And I think I’m in love! 😂 I will seriously read anything she’s written (at this point).
you do NOT sound stupid, i think the same way😂 i plan my reads based on the season and what i know will be going on in my life at the time! like, if i know i’ll be super busy and stuff, i plan to reread a favorite cause it’s easy and familiar
Love this video! Don’t worry I’m exactly like you, an absolute mood reader and I DO attach seasons to books 😂 I keep some books specifically for some seasons and I can’t read them until it’s the season that feels right!
If you wanna read a good book and get a magic vibe to read in the summer should be 'Ronja the Robbers Daughter' by Astrid Lindgren
I think In Other Lands is a fun summer vibe fantasy book. it pokes fun at the genre but in a fun way, doesn't take its self too seriously
The characters are the heart of the story and fun to watch grow up and evolve
I try to get around to reading this book every summer
Emily Henry’s books are so good! I read people we meet on vacation and beach read last week and I’m obsessed. I plan on reading book lovers next. Her books are such good summer reads fs
I am TOTALLY a mood and season reader too! :) I'm with you!
Nice to see your videos with a short gap. Your Vlog was so cute. We’d love to see more of them.
"Summer" mystery makes me think of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency coz it takes place in Africa. It was really fun, 5/5
loving that you closed out may with a shinee colored hoodie 👀💎🩵
I get the urge for nostalgic reads in the summertime too! my rec for you is Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn; it’s like a cozy slice of life fantasy that takes place over the summer. it also came out in like 2001 or 2003 or something, so maybe that’s why I find it nostalgic too? it has a certain writing style and reminds me of my childhood, but I could also be projecting 😅 also I totally attach moods and seasons to my books, you’re not alone!
The House on the Cerulean Sea is amazing (think MG style for adults)
your smile is so cute🙃
Agatha Christie murder mysteries are comfort reads for me, which some people would probably find super weird lol
And a lot of them do occur while people are on vacation, so slightly summery vibes?
If you’ve never read The Princess Bride, try that! I don’t know, when you say summery fantasy my brain goes to swashbuckling lol.
And yes give into Percy Jackson!!!! It is top notch summertime reading because it’s mostly set during summertime at a summer camp. I forget if you ever read the heroes of Olympus or trials of Apollo, but you MUST read those eventually they are SO GOOD!!
Took the quiz. Result: Serial Reader 🔍👀! Subject Matter Expert and Dissenter were close second and third.
Seasonal TBRs are the best for mood readers.
Me: Just chilling eating a bagel while I scroll through my phone.
Jesse: Yes I'm intimidated by you.
END OF VIDEO BLOOPERS ARE THE BEST 🤣
I’m a mood reader so I totally relate! Some summery fantasy books for me are The Ravenspire Series by C.J. Redwine (especially The Wish Granter), The Heirs of Neverland duology by Kara Swanson, and The Story Peddler by Lindsay Franklin.
I got young at heart on the quiz!
6:59 yes that book’s also on my tbr! Middle grade fantasy books is definitely a ‘why does adult life suck’ mood
12:21 ooo yes I remember you recommending this book and I was hooked, one of the ships carried me through the series!
I want to re read percy jackson too this year !! And i don't want to sound cliché but you HAVE to read t j klune books there are so good , every time i read his books it feels like a warm hug to me.
Have you ever read "Nothing to See Here" by Kevin Wilson? The book is set in summer. Its genre is fantasy, and contemporary.
It contains friendship and human drama, choices of life, etc. Plus, it has some "peculiar" vibes, I think. 😉💚
if you want a middle grade fantasy, you should read the Nevermoor trilogy by Jessica Townsend and the Heroes of Olympus series feels like summer to me because I do my reread of it every year around summertime
for mystery novels try the witch way librarian mystery series
If you just see the part of contemporary and murder mystery books, you would think it's pretty possible for him to read all of them, but then he appear with like 7 books in the fantasy part 🤣🤣🤣 amazing XD
Also got subject matter expert!
Mood and seasonal reader, I'm like that too 😅 As for recommendations, Five Survive, by the author of A Good Girl's... takes place during spring time I believe and it's a really fun thriller. The Inheritance Games gives me a bit of a summer vibe too, Idk if it is because that's when I read them tho 🤔
BA Paris and Liane Moriarty are good thrillers for the summer. Except Behind Closed Doors, that one is rough any time of year.
“the girl who circumnavigated fairyland” has been on my radar since mynameismarines gushed about it, so I'm excited to see what you think about it as well! I'm also rereading ADSOM this year in anticipation of the first threads of power book but also bc it's such a comfort series - I'm right there with you, the more times I read it, the more I love it! and Sadie is the nr 1 book I recommend to everyone who asks for audiobook recs, it's just insanely well done and the story has you hooked. I also read "I'm the girl" by Courtney Summers last year and I think she's slowly making her way up to becoming a new fav author for me. I wish more people talked about that book bc it's so heartbreakingly powerful and relevant.
I am a mood reader and I make tbrs. But it is not like this. Mine does not have a read by date. I finish the list when I finish them. And that is how I make it work, and the tbrs a lot of the time is just about me getting to certain books on my shelf, or making a list of books I am in the mood for at the moment. Like, at the moment, it is a lot of poetry. Among my current reads are Poems of the Sea, one that is from a tbr of books I'm sure I'll love because I had not had the best reading year, and Art and Artists Poems which is the borrowed book that I am currently reading. Each of my current read have a place for it and I reason as to why I am reading it whether it be whatever I want to read at that moment, or a reread of some kind, or according to tbr, or something along those lines. Most recently I made a tbr of each unread book that appears first and last of each section of my bookshelf. According to that one of my current reads is Pride and Prejudice, but I haven't picked it up yet, and it will be followed by The Poetry of Walt Whitman. So this way I am reading more of the books I have not read yet on my shelf. I will most likely finish The Wild Wood next, and I have a short novella lined up afterwards called The Wolf Girl (????? I believe that is the title) and then The Sea People. Also, I hope you get into the wayward children series because I love that series and I have read the most recent instalment in the last few weeks so my mind is very much focused on that series.
Idk why, but I really like the mic. Haha
Youre my comfort CZcamsr for sure. Love you amd your book recs! ☺
I took the quiz and found out I'm a young at heart reader type, which seems pretty accurate!
I got recommended old videos of yours from 5-6 years ago and decided to check out your more recent content. Subcribed aswell. Love it here the vibe is great 👍💜
I've changed a lot! Haha. Thanks for subscribing! :)
Broken Monsters was amazing!
If you’re interested in summery reads with unreliable narrators - The Guest by Emma Cline and We Were Liars by E. Lockheart were two I literally finished yesterday
Society "A microphone isn't a personality trait"
Jesse "Yes it is :3 "
The Merlin series by TA Barron is one of my favorite childhood fantasy series, and it mostly takes place on this spectacular island. I think you'd love it for the adventurous fantasy elements, the unique world, the "seeds" that you see "planted" early grow, and it has that comforting vibe of a childhood book without being too simplistic. The series technically has several, but books 1-5 follow Merlin in his youth in this "world between worlds" and are outstanding. Please check it out - this seems like a great fit based on your fantasy selections and what you described you'd like to get out of your reading experience this summer.
the truth witch book is amazing i have read all the books in the series i love it defiently recommend reading it.
14:04 PLEASE THE ZOOM OUT IS SO FUNNY
The Thursday Murder Club by RIchard Osman! Old people in a retirement village solving cold cases
Book recommendation! "Under the Whispering Door" also by T J Klune. One of my favourite books total
Okay, so the only book I could think of that feels like summer to me is In Deeper Waters by F. T. Lukens, which is a very sweet mainly light-hearted queer middle grade book with princes, legends and magic. The Sky in the Cerulean Sea feels more like an August read to me but please don’t let me stop you, I think that depends on the reader a lot.
The house in the cerulean sea is my favorite book, hope you enjoy!
Can recommend the Broken earth trilogy by NK Jemisin. I think it has summer vibes
