To quote Kate Sanders from ‘The Lizzie McGuire Movie’: “YOU, JESSE, ARE AN OUTFIT REPEATER!”
Well youuuuuuu are an outfit remembererer which is worse.
I like the mic. It makes the video ✨cozy✨
This is my first books before bed. It’s so lovely. I also loved Borders. Can you imagine if someone started a company with the scholastic style leaflet to distribute in work places, you could put you order in then feel the happiness when they arrived one boring Tuesday 🥰
Alix E. Harrow is quickly becoming a favorite "Once and Future Witches" and "Ten Thousand Doors of January" were both absolutely fantastic
Ten thousand door of January was amazing! Easily one of my favourite books!
Yes i loved ten thousand doors if january, i havent read once and future witches yet but definately looking forward to it!
My daughter still gets those scholastic order forms but they just send the books directly to us. She’s missing out on the fair coming to the school. It was always so fun! And omg!! I loved Boarders! So sad when they closed & I still think about them to.
So my elementary school went HAM with the reading events.
Did anyone else have independent silent reading time in like 1st grade? My teacher called ours SQUIRT aka super quiet independent reading time. We’d get I think half an hour where we had to read (whatever book we wanted) silently but we could sit wherever we wanted. At a desk, on the floor, under the sink, you could even lay on the floor or lay over some desks if you wanted. It’s something that just pops into my mind sometimes and makes me smile.
I also remember that we had to do those AR or accelerated reader tests. We literally had a pass we could take during study times that said “shhhh! I’m taking an AR test!” We could get excused from class to go take one. We had to take I think 5 over the course of the year in order to pass the grade. I know it was required work but I actually liked it
That same school was also REALLY into a series of unfortunate events. Our teachers read them to us and we’d discuss them. I remember we had a whole day themed around the series. There was a scavenger hunt, a costume contest, an invention contest science fair type dealio, they made us parsley soda (which was literally just sprite with a sprig of parsley in it but WE DIDNT CARE IT WAS FUN), we also had this game where our principal wore a picture of count Olaf and had to run through cones while we threw pies at him. I also won the slippery slope in a drawing! I still have it ❤
And of course we did a grade competition to see who could read more when I was in 4th grade. Guess who won 😁 I forget what we won but I remember they used a pie chart to fill in how many minutes we had read and 4th grade’s pie slice was almost off the paper by the end of it. I don’t even think the teachers thought kids could collectively read that much but when you make it a competition…we crush everyone 😂
The mike is fine with earphones, I've replaced Book Depository with World of books and I'm loving the deals
My bookish nostalgia: I miss as a kid packing myself a little picnic and a bunch of books and climbing the orange tree in the backyard and spending all afternoon nestled in the branches reading until the sun began to set and I lost the light. I even built a little pulley system with a basket to get everything up there. And when the fruit was in season pulling it straight off the tree and eating it while reading. There's nothing that quite replaces the wonder of those lazy afternoons.
I just found out yesterday that my library also does summer reading programs for all ages. I got excited , because now me and my 2 year old get to join them.
I forgot about borders.. we only had one in my area and we'd always go there after school to hang out, the cosiest of places 🥲 only bookstore near me that ever had a nice little Cafe inside it ☕️
I really enjoy this type of video to calm down before going to bed even if all I did today was read and write. It's always nice to see a video of yours pop up in the notifications also because your reading taste is different from all the other people I'm watching it's always refreshing.
I was so sad that book depoistory closed I got the news around the time when the Blurt Foundation officially closed it doors (blurt foundation was mental health charity and their resources where great (maybe the wayback machine has some saved?) and their buddy boxs described as a hug in a box were great and it really felt like a hug they sent things like brooches badger of courage and the turtle are my favourites the hot chocolate, the art, the messages were all so so good
I honestly love these kinda videos!!! Just cozy and chill while you get to listen to someone talk about one of your fave things in the world…
A book that deals in death in a different way that you might enjoy: Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune. A story about a heartless lawyer who is able to grow through his experience with death. One of my favourite books : )
Oh my god I love that book. I read it recently. TJ Klune is amazing. Like his writing is amazing. 😊
@@daniellai4403 right? The House in the Cerulean Sea also became one of my all time favourites
@@origamiislife4826 The House in the Cerulean Sea is a staple. Everyone must read it. TJ Klune's writing is something everyone should enjoy. If only I could write as well as him lol.
If you liked under the whispering door you might like Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. It has the same cozy vibes as House in the Cerulen Sea but also delves into some deeper themes.
It really sucks when a place you love closes down for good. It's happened to me many times, it really hurts.
My bookish nostalgias are probably just all my favorite books as a kid 😂 Pet Sitters Club was one of my top faves! I owned so many of those 😂
My current reads are a reread of The Summer We Forgot by Caroline George, and then my first TBR Jar read, Captains Courageous. CC has already made me snigger 🤣
I miss Borders too. It used to be next to the place I would get my clarinet lessons from so I would go into the store after my lessons waiting to be picked up.
I also always looked forward to the Scholastic Book Fairs when they would come to my school. I remember when I was in like 2nd or 3rd grade when they showed us book trailers for books that would be available at the festival's
I just picked “where the crawdads sing”! I hear a lot of good stuff about it
I just heard about it that the author is accused of murder😃👍🏻
I miss book fairs too!! My family was poor growing up so I could only buy 1 book a year, but fortunately my school had a pretty good library and I could just pick up books from there. And my dad loves to read as much as me so we would make an effort to buy some books that he wanted to read along with me.
I love my library’s adult summer reading program!
I feel the book nostalgia with borders and book fairs! Adults need fun too!
That was such a ** cozy ** video to watch before bed :)
I really miss silent reading time in classes! Like a dedicated time for everyone to break out their books and read, worked into the schedule?? Paradise for me! But trust me, I still have silent reading time every night before bed
I have been reading Dr.stone Manga and in another world with my smartphone light novel i really into manga and light novels i really enjoying reading light novels it's adds so much detail to the story
Book Outlet has a physical store and it reminds me so much of a giant scholastic book fair, books everywhere, bookish things everywhere, books that come with bookish things, I love it.
I have been reading more books on my kindle app than my physical tbr. The tbr is haunting me. Also Jesse these videos are my fav
I think about the Scholastic book fair alllllll the time! I miss it so much, and Borders too! My other big book nostalgia was Battle of the Books in elementary school, my team won in 6th grade which honestly was such a flex at the time 😂
I miss borders so much! My borders was so cozy and barnes and noble is just not the same. Every time I pass the old borders building I have to say how much I miss it lol. And book fairs, omg, I would go so broke if they did an adult book fair. I still own books that I got from the book fair in elementary school (im 27 now lol)
I love whenever you post 😍
Your videos always put a smile on my face!
I love these videos! My favorite to watch right before bed!
I love bookish nostalgia, my mum is a single mum and my babysitter would always read a book next to me reading my first books. When I was with my grandparents they would always forget they had me or assume the other was looking after me so more often than not I was alone in their house for hours on end and I loved those moments of picking up books from their endless shelves and although I didn’t always understand the books it was good and really started my obsession.
Fellow Missourian here! Our local book store is doing an adult book fair soon. It’s pretty exciting!
I personally think the way you have the microphone is really satisfying as it is! It feels...cozy, hehe. ;) ❤
Love to see another video from you Jesse! I am currently reading Starsight by Brandon Sanderson! Something you could do like show a playlist you listen to while you read or an ambience room. I know some people love that.
Also your videos always bring a smile to my face genuinely. Today was not the most amazing day for me and watching this before I go to my reading corner brightened my day. ❤
I feel your duality now that I’ve watched my first books before bed, haha! Energetic Jesse and calm and relaxed Jesse!
I’m trying to push myself into more fantasy and have been surprisingly enjoying political fantasy, which I didn’t expect to have as much interest in. My last read was Dance of Thieves by Mary E Pearson and I actually read it on my very first time going on a plane! I think it started off a little weak but picked up a lot, especially towards the end. A solid 4 star read and I can’t wait to read the second book!
if you reach for any Emma Mills book next, please let it be Foolish Hearts! that was my first EM book and it has such a lovely depiction of fandom that absolutely won my heart and I think you’d really love 💗
I LOVED book fairs when I was younger because I was That Girl Who Was Always Reading. They were so much fun!
I also remember Pizza Hut giving free personal pizzas and a medal if you met the summer reading goals for your school.
I’m quite a few years older than you. But we use to get free personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut for reading. They’d give us little cards and we’d get stamps from our teacher when we read a book and when we got a certain number. I think 10?!? We’d get the card and take it to Pizza Hut. Loved it. I still crave pizza when I read lol.
I am just as nostalgic as you! I remember the scholastic book orders and book fairs. I would always beg my parents to give me money to get a book. I think I still have a bookmark from one of the book fairs! Also, I used to participate in my public library's summer reading every single year. Our prize would always be a free book for every hour we read. It's even more nostalgic for me now cause I actually work at the same public library where we are currently in the midst of our summer reading challenge! We have some pretty good prizes if I do say so myself 😆
I feel wrapped in a cozy blanket when I watch this videos 🥰 thank you!
One thing I'm nostalgic about is being able to start a book and finish it in one sitting because I don't have a job, don't have a house to care for, can stay up all night, particularly during the summer...
Now I do have a job and a house to care for, I have considerably way less time and need my sleep to function 😂
Best kind of videos
I miss book depository soooo much. Where i live i Can’t find too many books in the stores, so it was great for me to find a lot of books there and with free shipping🥰
I really like Alix E. Harrow. I have read A Spindle Splintered and A Mirror Mended and really enjoy them both. I have also read Once and Future witches and thought it was great. I hope you enjoy them as well.
I miss Borders so much 😭😭😭
I have a Dystopian book idea in my mind, and once I am done with my horror novelette, I am gonna begin working on it. I've talked with many friends about it and we all agree that it's feel is going to be very Maze Runner, Divergent, Hunger Games feel. It seems like the nostalgia is hitting all of us!
I loved those book fairs, getting that order forms was so good especially if I got it before Christmas it gave my parents ideas
The Bookmobile is my childhood thing.
I used to love those scholastic book fairs when I was a kid, I would do the same soon as I got them in school I'd run home like "mom, it's book time !" and she knew lol
Been watching your channel since 2019 and your channel hasn't changed in that quirky funny vibe and whenever i wish to find some coziness (yes i know you're done with the wooorddd but i had no other substitution :>) i come straight here :] love you jesse
As far as headphone sound quality (for me), it’s working fine; I do have to turn up the volume a decent bit tho, but that’s just me! Great vid as always ❤!
rip book depository 💔still very sad about it. I finished reading From Lukov with love last night, really enjoyed it, and idk yet what I´m going to read next
Ahhhh Borders!!! LOVED THEM! My elementary school had book fairs and then a dance on Friday to end it... my mom always volunteered for the fair, so I'd go dance for ten minutes and spend 2 hours looking at the books 😂 My library has adult summer reading too- free book at the end and can enter for prizes- skateboard bike Chromebook.
Thanks for the nostalgia!
I found out last year that my library allowed all ages in the summer reading program. I was so fricken excited! I got a medal, a tote bag, and a coupon for a free book from the library run used book store in my town. I went up to the counter to get my prizes and they were like do you want the medal? Hell yah I do! who doesn't?! lol
I was also in to books as a child, even thou I didn't read them 😅 The thing that got me to actually read books (and also collecting them) in the 2010's was the old Booktube gang. You know, you, Ariel Bissett, Raeleen from Padfootandprong07, Caz(?) from LittleBookOwl and Maureen Keavy. You guys made me spent so much money on books 😂❤ I really miss that old Booktube era with collaborations and Booktubeathon. I never actually participated but I loved to watch it 😍😍 So thank you, you are awesome!!
(Not a native english speaker so please excuse my english☺️)
You have a cute pair of glasses.
I really miss boarders to, it was awesome though when they started selling all there books for a dolor to get rid of them. Unfortunately I was still a kid and could not drive or have a job at the time. If I had the money I do know I would have probably bought hundreds of books from them at those prices. I still got a dozen or so for almost no money. I miss the days when I was just learning about all the genres and types of books. It feels like I now know all of different types of books, which is cool but there is nothing like that feeling of newness and discovering.
I rly miss the little reading nook at my childhood bookstore, it was near my church so we were there every Sunday. The nook wasn't v comfortable (a tiny hard wood table and one little chair meant for kids) but it was beside a stand of Archie comics and I would spend hours there just reading while my parents shopped around the mall. Sadly, the mall renovated around 7 yrs ago and the bookstore never opened again :(( change is hard.
Question, you mentioned not being much of a reader as a kid, may I ask how you fell in love with books?
I was so upset when B. Dalton Books closed when I was a kid. My grandma always asked what book I wanted to get and she would always buy one for me. It was the highlight of the mall when I was young.
I can name 3 things that certified why Elementary school were the best school years in the 90s.
1. Floppy square Cheese pizza
2. Field Trips
3. SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIRS.
What a time to live.
Becoming an Adult sucks because we are expected to think and act a certain way. Gone are the days of being carefree. But becoming old and Growing up is a choice, I personally think if you're an adult who doesn't have at least the heart of a child, you're not living a healthy life.
But to touch on Borders, my town mall had a Waldenbooks years ago and it was a tiny store, but I could and had spent hours in the back just browsing while my grandma and mom were shopping. More often times than not, I had to leave the store with at least a Goosebumps book on my arm. The day Waldens closed because of Borders was a sad day and it began a nonconnected domino affect where every bookshop in my town soon started closing up shop. I miss the trips of walking into a used bookstore and that smell of old paper greeting me like an old friend.
I do have my mom and grandma and a few teachers to thank for instilling the reading bug in me.
AHHH scholastic book fairs were LIFE
also... DON'T TALK ABOUT THE BOOK DEPOSITORY THING-IM STILL EXTREMELY UPSET!!! Idk how I'll get uk covers easily now :(
yesss scholastic book fair 🙌 and similarly, book orders. my book nostalgia is pretty much the same as yours😂
I have also been thinking about the book fair lately. Going to my public library especially when I see my favorite librarian around town she invited me back to the library.
You have BayMax ! Oooh it’s so cute !
I really like this style of video, thank you :)
Oh borders, you brought me back. (Catching up on your vids sir!) I loved going there after high school. What a surprise to see my comment highlighted 😊🎉 and agree that the trilogy is flawless. That and the jade city, jade war and jade legacy trio are my two favorite trilogies. Have you read those yet, jesse?
i loveee this series. i always come home from work completely drained but in need of some form of entertainment that fits the mood, and these do it. i love hearing what you have to say. keep it up!!
My local indie bookstore does an adult book fair twice a year.
You don't have to get new pjs. If you show up in clearly well worn t-shirt, I don't think most of us will do a double take. (Or a new one.) This is the fate of many a t-shirt.
I did really like A Spindle Splintered. I haven't read anything else though.
My library's summer reading program sometimes includes adults, but I wish they were consistent.
I really need to read more. I've been in an insane slump for like a month now and its killing me
I made a StoryGraph challenge for myself to keep up with authors I want to read more books from. Would recommend.
YES keep the fun going! Absolutely a requirement for sane grown-upping. And as the mom of kids who are too old for them now, I miss Scholastic Book Fairs, too.
I actually like asymmetry, ssoo.... I don't mind when you sit slightly off center. It's very cozy/comfy for me^-^ (PLUS, I could tell that _you_ were feeling relatively comfy too, and that's the real important thing here. 🤭🤭) 💖
Hey, Jesse! I'd love to hear your take on House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Could you please vlog yourself reading it?
I’ll add it to my list of books to get to!
I'd love to get into cozy fantasy, if anyone has any recs please share 🙏
And that bit opening the last book depository order got me 🥲 my last book from there also made me so emo, they were my go-to for years 💔
I don't drink coffee but it's one of my most favorite smells coz it makes me think of borders. and my grampa. There's a BAM in our old borders so it's close. I feel like it's kinda expensive. idk I think everything is expensive
Just found your channel through an old review you posted on good reads. Percy Jackson: The Titan's Curse
dunno if this type of vid you're doin is new but keep it coming 😁
I use the `headphones` that you got when you got a new phone (years ago) and find no issues... sounds fine to me...
Get some silky PJs for Books Before Bed ❤😊
My ears are fine.
WHAT??? You're library lets adults participate in the summer reading program!! So jealous!! :D
you should check yours, cuz mine does do and I've seen a lot of libraries on tiktok advertising adult summer reading program. Only found out last year mine allowed adults and I got a medal and a coupon to a used book store XD made me so happy lol
I just looked too and all of the local libraries in my area do adult summer reading programs. The one closest to me gives me a coupon for a free used book for every 3 books I read 😮
Loved this vid was so chill definately what i needed right now aha, im currently reading living planet by david attenborough and 100 queer poems so hoping to start the greek mythology Medusa soon by Jessie Burton as it sounds so interesting...i was literally in the book store like i really want a book from medusas perspective, turned round and there it was staring at me like i really felt like i was having a main character day ahaha
This was a good video, I am reading "A" is for Alibi by Sue Grafton. It is the first book to Kinsey Millhouse Mystery It is pretty good so far.
Book Riot is scholastic for adults
Pizza kinda makes me bookishly nostalgic, because of Pizza Hut's BOOK-IT program. 😁 (I have no idea if they're still doing that or not. Our local pizza hut closed down when the owner of that branch passed away or something like that.😿😿💔)
I just remember that I always had so much fun with that as a kid ^-^
Oh wow! I vaguely remember this.
running to google to find out more information haha
@@jessethereader 😆
I remember if you or your class read a certain number of books, they'd get a pizza party right?
@@BrandontheBeldam2993 Yeah, something like that! (I was homeschooled, so I didn't really have a whole class. But, yeah, that sounds about right!! You'd get a "personal pan pizza" .. one time I even got to make my own or something, it was pretty cool.)
Take a shot everytime Jesse says Alix E. Harrow 😏
I’ve yet to find the cozy fantasy for me
14:51 I'm not crying... I'm not crying... We all have different opinions... but I think you didn't need to say so mu... Anyway, this video made me feel so COZY ♪ 😆💚
Mic is working fine w my head phones (I do keep them turned way down though).
Um, I have heard better things about Alex E. Harrow's more recent work, but I cannot rec Once and Future. I was not comfy w/ how casual she was with the use of "colored" to describe Black people. There's a whole rant somewhere in one of my worst books of the year list, but basically my critique boils down to, yes that was historically accurate but we're already working w an alternate history and the words that don't have that loaded history were also accepted and available in that time period. There were other issues I had w that book, but I can forgive bad plot choices.
Lol. Not me not even realizing I was the first comment 😂
I wish my library had a reading challenge for adults. The one at my library only goes to age 12 :(
I'm so confused Book Depository is still a thing in Australia
My library has summer reading for adults, because why should kids get to have all the fun?
Snug Fantasy Chapter
Comfy Fantasy Episode
Relaxing Fantasy Phase
I wear in-ear earbuds and didn't experience anything unpleasant due to your mic.
The mic is not great, what happened to just your regular mic, the sound is even bad on speakers :(
I’m so sorry but the Jeffrey Dahmer glasses are throwing me a bit
Awww.... the Scholastic book fairs. 🥹
