Fanfare is probably Dorian's most accessible album so far, but something is missing amidst its maximalism.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? - Hudba
You arent allowed to dislike this record because I like it lots. Stupit
I’ll never understand the consensus online that fantano’s fans follow everything he likes when every comment section is filled w mostly rebuttals
Right?
@@anthonii.x people who say that have never been in his comments, they are just hating
music nerd is that sort of animal, especially… japanese sh*t
Tbh people who are mad are just more likely to leave a comment in rage
@@francesoxberry6816 I’m just saying the discussion off CZcams everywhere I go of what people say are fantano fans is that “they just follow his word like gospel and only like bands he likes” and I think that’s wildly off base lmao tbh for me besides the memes that get old on the comment section, I really like that this is a cool music space to have discussions about albums w people.
anthony obviously just wants to be the 9 to dorian electra’s 6
dayum
I feel soo dumb cause it took me a while to get that stupid joke lmao
I personally read Manmade Horrors as being more about the ironic transformation of sexual deviance and anti-capitalist symbols into capitalist consumerist products. The manmade horrors are not the things themselves but the irony in their construction for mass consumption.
This 💯
Excellent take
especially evidenced by the line "bought a Che Guevara shirt from Zara on sale".
There's an anti capitalist through-line with the sexually liberated tracks like Sodom and Gomorrah, too. That track remarks on the absurdity of commodifying tragedy. Unfortunately that theme mostly comes out in the music video and less so in the lyrics.
The problem is it drags on with similar sounds and vibes so much it's hard to pay attention to whether there is something clever to it
Which is absolutely a continuation of the themes they introduce on Sodom and Gomorrah
imo my agenda was a collection of really great songs, while fanfare is a great _album._ on fanfare, every song flows into the next, building a cohesive narrative with a consistent POV. originally the singles felt a little meh, but i fell in love with them once i heard them in context.
everything just feels incredibly intentional too. sometimes hyperpop can devolve into unmotivated noise, simply loud without a thematic or melodic purpose. but in fanfare, everything from the lyrics to the music to the placement of the tracks in the album feels like a deliberate, careful choice. it’s beautifully done and dorian should be proud.
sorry, hard disagree. my agenda is one of my fav albums ever because of how thematical it is. Fanfare seems a lot more like a very loosely connected collection of tracks with no cohesive theme. still liked the record tho
Hard disagree almost on a flipped opposite. My agenda has one POV, one central theme and character that goes thru it from start to finish. Fanfare similarly tackles a lot of ideas and themes and TRIES to tie them together but the character POV is nowhere near as solid as My Agenda so it sounds cohesive (especially musically) but thematically it feels like a lot of disconnected concepts.
I have to clarify that I liked fanfare a lot and I think it’s lyrical themes are THE BEST part of it. For me though, it doesn’t always mesh hand in hand perfectly with the music imo like flamboyant and my agenda did.
Flamboyant was glittery and ultra queer pop music as a big exploration of different types of masculinity toxic or otherwise. My Agenda is loud ass EDM cause it’s a satire of gamer culture and uncle culture that’s loud first and hides a lot of sentimentality under layers of irony. There’s no reason from a thematic perspective that I can tell, why the music side has to be so nu metal inspired. The critique from the lyrics feels like it’s all about nihilism and sexual repression n such. Idk how much nu metal fits there.
@@ShaiGuyzhard agree
I totally agree with you. I thought singles were meh until I heard them in context. Then I was like 🤯🤯. This album is a banger
Here's my unsolicited take: The album is actually a commentary on the underground pop community. It demonstrates how DE could literally put out the safest, on-the-nose themes and dump a load of hyper-pop instrumentation on it and we'd eat it up. Notice the lack of facial expressions and posing that DE does in the MVs for the tracks. They're ridiculing how even the most alternative of spaces/artists and creative platforms are becoming commercialized and shallow. I am convinced this is all performance art meant to make us question the sincerity of the supposedly alternative artists we follow and listen to. 🤷
Well that makes me feel like shit because I like this album the most
Ahh it feels good to see someone with a similar take. I got this sick feeling in my stomach halfway through listening to the album that I didn't understand at first, but something just felt... off about it. As I listened more I got the feel of how by the books, bare bones some of the elements are, while also being very dramatic and catchy, and the up front dissonace at just the perfect moments... I think they're saying... Why are we all falling for this shit? Why are you falling for it?
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my take and now I'm a bigger fan than I was pre-fanfare😂 Blessings
100% you can also see that in listening to the music through the video vs the album. I couldn't even make it through the music videos for puppet and anon, they were just so repetitive and annoying, but on the album, in the context, they're still not great but they at least are listenable. The videos seem specifically designed to annoy with the constant repeating of the same visuals. It all clicked when I heard yes man tho. "cut the fucking fanfare"
I'm honestly surprised there was no mention of Yes Man. It's one of the most epic songs on the album, and it seems to be part of a trilogy (Manmade Horrors, Yes Man, Anon). I do agree that it's oddly more pop adjacent than previous albums, despite the heavy sounds. But I think the album is much more cohesive than Anthony realizes.
I might just be a simp for them at this point because i loved the hell out of this album lol
yeah but maybe it’s also the clarence clarity production lol
“Them”? Isn’t it just dorian?
@@poopy_fingers3324 they can be used as a gender neutral pronoun
@@NZsaltzdidn't dorian say they exclusively go by they? if not please correct me!
@@nickyheart yes, and they is being used as a gender neutral pronoun when referring to dorian. that's the point
Man, I mean I know it's not as crazy and ambitious as the previous 2 records but it's just bangers on bangers on bangers and I absolutely love it. Been on repeat since its release for sure.
Second this. And omg this is produced so good
I think this is they monst ambitious album
Fanfare is the modern mbdtf 😔😔
You still mad that he rated the most overrated album a 6 ?
I think this album is a story. Aside from the opening song "Symphony" and the ending song "Wanna be a star," the 11 songs in between feel like they have a dramatic three-part structure.
I think the peak of this album is "Yes Man" which you didn’t talk about. It was very artistic to sublimate a painful experience into a piece of music, and to dramatize the flow of their personal emotions into the song. Even though the songs are made with great care and attention to detail, they maintain an honest flow of emotion, which gives me a sense of catharsis. I thought that many people would be saved by this song.
The highly entertaining sound has the fun of involving us fans in the drama, and the unique sound effects inserted at perfect timing are amazing and make the mood even more exciting.
I did think while it's a lot of fun and has highlights to match their other albums, it is a 'safe' Dorian Electra album that doesn't move them forward as much as boil down what they've done so far. 7/10.
Puppet is my fave track though, wth mr.needledrop
I love this record but puppet is atrocious 💀
@@Derangedlefty Nah, Puppet goes HARD
Agree on everything, including Puppet being the best
Was coming to the comments to say this exactly lol. I'm not sure why Puppet was interperated as something that felt disingenuous to Dorian. Give Great Thanks set the tone pretty well as what kind of sexual content we can expect, I think Puppet is kind of a great follow up.
thanks for always covering Dorian's releases especially since other outlets seem content to ignore them forever *cough* pitchfork *cough* your flamboyant review is what turned me onto them and I've been a stan ever since - seems like a lot of your audience is finally catching up xp
I do think the “vision” behind Fanfare isn’t as cohesive and unique as My Agenda or Flamboyant but I still enjoyed all the tracks. It still feels like a Dorian Electra album even if it’s relatively safe compared to their other albums. Lots of fun and I liked the heavier moments too
I actually liked this album more than My Agenda. I think that album got a bit too zany and memey for its own good and this one was more back to basics. It is a bit inconsistent but I definitely think the best songs are very solid and welcome additions to the Dorian canon.
I agree. We needed to have something more listenable, if less conceptual after "My Agenda". Im questioning if the themes on queer liberation in face of demonization and commodification are just lost on Fantano. The party-in your face sound matches this wondefuly.
@@snoozley853he listens to one or two new albums almost every day. I struggle to get through an entirely new album a month!
My agenda was definitely fun but it fell under this vein where I was glad I got to listen to it, but I won’t have it on repeat or anything. I just prefer fanfare’s overall sound way more, it reminds me of the classical influences from flamboyant, which were one of my favorite things about that album. Overall, I’d say flamboyant is still my favorite, but fanfare is a strong second favorite
Agree. While Fanfare is obviously more accessible, I can't say it's a bad thing for Dorian's music. I enjoy the album a lot!
agreed 😌
Glad we finally got a review of a classic tune, “Fanfare”.
all this time waiting only for him to give it a 6… manmade horror’s message flew over his head
I can't believe "Yes Man" didn't even get a mention, it's my favorite track by far!
That being said, I'm surprised how much the rewiev aligns with my own thoughts about the album
I agree! Yes man was the best one imo.
Yes!!!! It's been on repeat ever since it came out
Same!!! I've been having Yes Man on repeat every day!!
And same for the rest of your comment!! This album definitely feels a bit toned down compared to previous ones. But as long as it still sounds catchy, I'm alright with it.
idk, to me, this album felt like the culmination of all their work! So many bangers, and how did you not even mention more experimental tracks like Yes Man, if you were looking for more out there moments... Appreciate your take as always though!
Completely agree. This felt like their most well rounded project to me. Not sure how it missed his taste so much. Surprised, but there’s always a few each year I’m ‘really?’
ima have to respectfully disagree. i havent stopped listening to this album since it came out. i genuinely think Dorian is one of the most interesting artists around and will always support them!
although I do agree it is a safe album I can understand why that may be necessary to build new listeners. I dont think this will be their final form.
How do you feel about sodomy?
you have to remember that fantano is the musical equivalent of a porn addict
Great review, honestly interesting and I can't help but to agree this is the most palatable of their work, but I would defend the 2000/2010s pop aesthetic as an intentional choice since starting with My Agenda you get a ton of sonic references to early Internet-originated electronic music styles. There are absolutely some tracks on this one that just straight up remind me of MCR's Black Parade with those big stadium rock sounds in some of the tracks as well as some very specific compositional/structural choices I've never really heard outside of music from that time period.
Fantano is showing his age by not responding positively to the Y2K pop/nu-metal vibes.
In the realm of hyper pop, would love to hear your thoughts on the recent release of Slayyyter's Starfucker album.
Yes! Although I wouldn’t call it hyper pop
@meteorical8036 Yeah she definitely toned the hyperpop down for it and focused more on her vocals and pop sound imo. But there's still some hyperpop beats in there.
2023 is the year Anthony is turning his back on hyperpop, a genre he help get noticed.
he's a grifter fr

He's turning back the dial on poptimism in general. And it also seems to me that pop artists are starting to veer away from the snob class as well. I blame Jack Antonoff for the divorce.
You only gave this a 6 because you use a numerical scale from 0 to 10
I really thought you were not going to formally review it
You dead wrong for this bru
I get that Dorian doesn't have the surprise factor anymore, but not even mention "Yes Man" is just a big oversight.
Omg I literally just commented on another video wondering where your review was. FanFare was a 9.5/10 for me I really hope we get a deluxe!
Symphony does seem like Dorian’s version of Rina Sawayama’s Dynasty to me, especially once i found out Clarence Clarity had his hand in some of this record.
I...i actually really like Puppet...
That’s the beauty of opinions, you don’t have to agree. Enjoy it!
yea fantano trippin LOL
One of my favorite songs on there Fr
I can’t believe he didn’t even mention Yes Man 🥲
Easily my favorite album from them.
same!
Flamboyant is more fun.
um wow. as someone who wasn't a big fan of dorian's work in the past this kind of is my favorite work by them. im surprised the consensus is that this work isn't as good as their previous stuff
I give fanfare an 8+/10
I’ve been a fan of them for a long time, and while I don’t think it’s a bad album, a lot of the intentional “cringe” themes are getting pretty redundant imo
You weren't a fan of Flamboyant? That is like one of the best Pop albums ever made!! Period
this is the one time where pronouns fqed with me. I thought it was a band and that Dorian wasn’t one person like I thought all along
every dorian's album is a masterpiece, we love dorian here
Loving the hardcore moments on this project !!
This album really reminded me of a Britney Spears record as weird as that sounds. Like the bridge of s&g and the cvnty verses on manmade horrors. It’s so Britney coded.
I don't get why every album needs to be groundbreaking and monumental or have a clear ongoing theme to be enjoyable. Yes, This record played into some normal pop conventions, but this was contrasted with some alternative rock and edm production as well. The lyrical themes while disconnected gave a great perspective on Capitalism
Great record imo
6/10 Is a good score.
Yeah but previous albums had the same sounds. It’s just watered down on this one. Also I guess he was more disappointed in the themes and songs themselves than anything else
@@joaquin5929 Sometimes toning down the isnanity in favor of moderation to put more focus on other aspects of the music can act as a good stylistic choice
Let's not act like this album wouldn't be pretty out there and eccentric for like any other pop artist
@@drewknox1 Light 6 is meh if anything
@@DietDrKelp-ti3zs But he clearly stated he didn't find it to be the case in this album. He didn't say "it's toned down therefore it's bad", he said "it's toned down and that didn't favor this album", which is obviously subjective because, well, it's a review. Personally I'm more inclined to listen to the album now that he said it's toned down even if he didn't enjoy that, because Doran's previous records are a bit too much for my taste.
I really enjoyed this album despite it being less adventurous from the last album, it's still just executed so well. Though this may just me coming up with justifications for the fact that I just couldn't turn it off for weeks.
Everything you pointed out after the first minute is why I like it, but thats how it goes. Its one of my favs of the year, even if its not amazing. I actually like that it is somewhat less chaotic and unhinged. We have to move away from the iconic, but overdone "pots and pans" gecs hyperpop sound eventualy. Tracks like "Idolize" and "S&G" are good examples of accessible poptunes with edge to me. I will agree on "Manmade Horrors" sounding almost oppositional/conservative out of a sudden. A lot of the lyrical content is funny and hits home for queer people who see their identity demonized, yet commodified at the same time. The album encapsulates that dichotomy very well. This feels more so like a transition than a safe zone imo. I want to see more unusual pop that pushes into the mainstream, than just staying unaccessible for the sake of it. The overall concept was a bit weaker and less layered than "My Agenda", but I prefer this one musicaly, more bops. Its a light 8 for me. Im suprised the opinion on this Album outside the core fanbase is pretty bad. To me, it was obvious we can not get something as extreme and pop-culturey as "My Agenda" every time - if they leaned even more into memes and references to reddit incels etc. Id even say that would have been a big mistake. Being that "noisy" and only understandable with urban dictonary again would have coined them as _that artist_ for sure. Im excited to see where they go next.
i'd take pot and pan gecs hyperpop over whatever is going in the mainstream anyday
when’s the jane remover review comin?
Dissapointed this took so long just to get a six. Really enjoying this album. Ah well, regardless of our opinions it's good for Dorian to get more exposure.
there was a clear lack of dylan Brady production on this album after he coproduced their first two projects, really think the best moments on this album are when the likes of umru and Clarence clarity take over the production for dorain and his team on this album
Fyi Dorian’s pronouns are they/them :)
@nbgav thx for the reminder, prolly was accidentally referring to dylan in my mind while typing lul
%100 agreed
Eh, can't win em all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm really enjoying this album but I also took awhile to distill my thoughts on it. I would say it is Dorian's most mature and personal release by far, with richer instrumental palettes (the branding used horns for a reason) and a very cohesive mood. It feels nostalgic but fresh and uniquely Dorian by taking 90s-2000s music trends and influences from their youth then throwing them all in a blender. Didn't expect to be emotionally moved by a ska finale for one. I think it's harder to pull out a core thematic thruline from this album than Flamboyant or My Agenda where you can easily draw the line from whatever a song is talking about back to masculinity. There were over a hundred demos in the development of this album so it makes sense that it would be less laser focused. I think the overarching thruline for me is commodification, which links in with the pop idol rise and fall arc. Both pop stars and literal stuff are created in "factories" to be consumed for novelty and entertainment then trashed. I think the horny lyrics that are explicit rather than innuendo have an immediate shock value reflecting this. The aged, degraded elements of the visuals and costuming tie into this really nicely with a decaying, lonely, maybe even store-bought opulence.
I'm so glad you reviewed this! I was afraid to see it pop up in a Why You No Review segment one day lol. Love Symphony, Anon, and Wanna be a star in particular, they may be somewhat safer than their usual stuff but they're all bangers nonetheless
I dont know, i feel like this album was better than My Agenda (most of it anyway) but not as good as Flamboyant. There's some bangers on this album for sure, but some are a bit lacking in classic Dorian Electra style.
Im surprised to hear ff as more widely appealing/safe, especially after seeing them perform on tour. To me the sounds of this album are often harder to listen to, the poetry harder to understand/decode, and the show has some funky ass elements like a solo a capella opera interlude
big L take IMO - for me the album was great, not quite as good as their others but definitely not 6-worthy. also, puppet being least favorite track is ABSURD!
Fantano seems to think Puppet is about extreme sex, and yes, it uses sexually coded language. But it's really about being a modern celebrity -- you know, the explicit theme of the album -- and the addictive love/hate feeling of being controlled by an online fandom. Using fisting as a metaphor for internet fame is exactly the kind of conceptual strangeness he says the album is lacking. IDK, it's like he listened to it once or twice and didn't really give it any analysis before writing the review.
For me it's their best album
This album is real music
After I heard this album all I could think was Mindless Self Indulgence. Now that Melon has confirmed I feel vindicated.
when i was at the Fanfare tour it seems like tracks from Fanfare were more about the performance (amazing btw, dancers and costumes and set) whereas the other songs on the set were played as fan favourite for the music's sake.
Flamboyant is still my fav but it is definitely the most accessible dorian album not Fanfare
I don't fully agree with your points on the instrumentals, but yeah the songwriting just dragged this album down for me. A bit of a shame
The track "man made horrors" is about overconsumerism/capitalism not degeneracy.
i agree this album is relatively safe for them, but i’m just glad they’re not toning it down to radio levels ala rina and charlie. i can’t complain at all - the songs are great, still weird, still fun, all bangers and well executed. your flamboyant review was what turned me on to them, though, so thank you for that. seeing them for the second time in the spring, couldn’t be more excited!
He thought about this one for a while
I love fanfare lol. I get and agree with a lot of the critiques here but I appreciate that the album here is much less pointed, because I love that it leaves the songs' meaning and intent up to interpretation. I've spent a lot of time reading their artist statements, and its' interesting the way they double up meaning with their lyrics and stacking themes on top of each other.
i really liked all the singles and manmade horrors is really good. i saw the first live show for it and it slayed.
Feeling like he’ll have similar views on the recent Poppy LP if he ends up covering it. I was definitely left with a similar impression with both. In that they certainly are not lacking in ambition or creativity fans have come to expect, but unfortunately not quite hitting the bullseye in the execution. But both have enough really great moments to leave me somewhat content.
im kind of sensing that he'll give it below a 5, honestly
but. i actually kind of have a few highlights on the album. i was expecting it to be awful but really it's just on the good side of mid. remove the first 3 songs and that horrendous title track and you're left with a rather decent EP
@@wpbn5613 I’m strapping in for the possibility of the dreaded red flannel myself 😬
And that’s hilarious, you’d take out some of my favorite tracks lol. I do get if the lyrics of Zig turn you off as they aren’t my favorite, but the instrumental GOES. And I think Hard might actually be my overall best song on the album. I hope that if this sister album that’s being teased ends up being a thing that I enjoy it more, as I hate to feel sorta mid on anything Poppy as I’ve liked to loved everything up until this one.
@@JoshLeitzelI can get past the lyrics but I hate the instrumental of Zig. Easily the worst mixing on the album too. The "I'm awake I'm AWAKE IM AWWWKWKWKWK" is the final nail in the coffin for me lol
I liked this album more than My Agenda, its what I wanted to hear from Dorian since Flamboyant. My Agenda was a bit too experimental and weird for me. Maybe I just have boring tastes lol
I think this was their best album to date tbh.
this album has to be at least a 7/10 bc it has 4 tracks produced by clarence clarity
God I love trans music
If this was named To Pimp A Dorian it would have got a 10/10
I honestly thought you were taking so long bc you were going to buy a combo red and yellow flannel to match the cover
warning signs iconic tho
Just because you don’t like medieval times does not mean you can give it a 6
yay dorian electra’s review! it was a mixed bag for me too, idolize in particular sounds so generic to me 😭 but i liked explosive energy of phonies and manmade horrors
Anfare Fantanfare
Puppet being the worst track bro huh 💀💀💀
it -IS- the worst track! So repetitive and cringe
Nah hes right on that one it wears thin super quick
Yeah its fucking terrible
puppet is top 5 for me, really like the instrumentals and their singing on it
I agree. I still have Adam and Steve and Flamboyant on my liked playlists but I struggled to find the same appeal here. That being said, idolize was just too catchy to ignore. I think the album deserves an 8/10 for the catchiness and the irony.
its a 10 for the track lifetime alone
The only two tracks that I didn’t quite click with were “warning signs” and “yes man” I dunno, those ones just didn’t really do it for me and “idolize” and “anon” almost don’t click but I ended up enjoying.
My favs have to be “phonies” and “manmade horrors” though. The pre-release tracks would probably rank higher if I didn’t hear them so much already.
to pimp a fanfare was secretly ur aoty
This album was a perfect intro to Dorian, allowing space to dive deeper. Definitely made to appeal to a wider group, which is partly how all of my friend group came to enjoy Dorian… each of us prefer a different album from the previous releases, but we all agree on this one.
Fantastic album, even though I think the green album is better
This is so weird to me because I thought Touch Grass was the worst track with puppet, I'm kind of blown away that not even Anon or Yes man are on here...
Yeah I was a little bummed with this one, figured it was going in a yunoreview tbh.
It's ok to be wrong melon, like always
Weird but serious question- when you listen to the albums that you do reviews on, are you listening with complete focus (not doing anything other than listening) or are you driving, doing chores, etc ?
I play guitar and I realized if I don’t put 100% focus into trying to learn or even create new sounds, it just doesn’t work
Just, beyond wish that Dorian would head back to the same vibes as Flamboyant, it literally meant so much seeing them live during that era, and now i just, dont personally enjoy the new stuff 😥
please review the new parcels album
I feel like fanfare will grow on people in time
As a huge fan of my agenda I was so disappointed by this album. Tbh I thought it would’ve been a 5/10 Dorian has done so much better
Love the hardest moments on here
I honestly think this is their most experimental album and their best by a mile. I feel like this honestly expands on some of the best ideas that were present on My Agenda.
Thanks for the honest review
anthony pls census designated
You're right that it's not particularly thematically interesting, but it's great to listen to
Need a sequel to flamboyant, peak dorian
I kinda get where you're coming from. You didn't say anything I necessarily disagree with. I think it's a 7, maybe an 8 on a good day. My straight friends were not too overwhelmed when I played it, and that says something. I can't believe you didn't mention "Yes Man" or "Lifetime", though. Two of their best songs ever. I'm also seeing them live in a month and I feel like it's going to be an absolute blast to experience.
it's a modern version of a night at the opera by Queen , and it's fantastic
Review dsiboys pleaaase. It came out earlier this year but they deserve recognition
Idolise was the first song I heard from Dorian from a good friend (I may have heard Flamboyant eons ago but I'm unsure) and, yeah, while a song I very much enjoy, it does not represent Dorian as a whole, I found out. I've found it a bit difficult to journey through but I've found a lot of what I like (Ram It Down, Manmade Horrors, Freakmode etc). I'm seeing them with this friend in January so hopefully the vibe can ease me in more.
i agree with this take. i love dorian and their work but this album did seem to lack some of the bite of their other albums
completely 100% agree with everything fantano said here which might actually be a first time experience for me
Rate the new Bombay bicycle club album pretty please
Awesome, haha WARGASM - Venom, that would be an interesting review.
Anyone have any recommendations for someone who reviews more progressive rock tilted music? I'm thinking acts like Tesseract, Night Verses, Closure in Moscow, The Ocean, etc...
While Fanfare isn't my favorite album from Dorian, I still really enjoyed it and would probably rate it a 7.5 if I had to give a rating. Sure, it was a lot more "safe" than their previous albums, but for me that didn't stop me from enjoying it. It's a solid album IMO, just not Dorian's best work, definitely could have been better but I still really enjoyed it. My favorite song off Fanfare is probably actually Idolize, simply because it's a really fun and catchy song that is very reminiscent of early 2000's dance pop.
My least favorite album from them so far, most of the songs sound kinda half-baked
