    💑 About Hercules Candy
Hercules Candy has been on Steve’s side of the family since 1910(ish). When he took over in the 70’s, he anticipated after 10 years of hard work, he could move the business out of the basement and into a real storefront. Unfortunately, it took until 2018 for that to happen, but hey at least it happened! Steve and Terry own the shop, Craig (the social media manager) is their son, Cara (wrapper and shipper extraordinaire who is poised to take over the shop one day) is their daughter and Leah (who doesn’t love being on camera and is very elusive) is their oldest daughter. Karen has been working for Hercules Candy since the twins (Craig and Cara) were about 6 months old and everybody else is a new recruit. Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the 🔔 for more videos!

Anise seed is the flavour of Ouzo, which is a Greek alcoholic drink and probably why it was added to the spice mix by Steve’s family. A traditional taste of the old country.

Maybe to put into perspective the flavorings that were available to "early" candy makers... were the spices... the other fruity flavors came along a long time after. Early candy makers were just so ecstatic to have sugar at their disposal... they didn't really consider all the other options they had to flavor the candy. To me... this is why original "ribbon candy" at the holiday season (when I was a kid about 100 years ago) was always spiced flavors. It looked so pretty, but as kids, it was really kind of yucky.

I LOVE the flavor of your hard candies they are great and long lasting. You guys show so much care in how you package the candy and the packaging materials are high quality which definitely justifies the cost the old saying "you get what you pay for" is definitely apropos and I will definitely be ordering again, love the candy!! There are a couple of 'old fashioned' flavours in Australia, and Anise is one of them (but we call it Aniseed). Growing up, we'd have aniseed sticks (also called slate pencils - which will date them). The other one is Musk. Both are not popular in younger generations, but are for us oldies. I think cloves as a flavour goes back to 1800's? Was used as a breath freshener.

The the oil extracted from anise seed consists of trans-anethole (85.69%), limonene (2.92%) (also found in orange peel!), chavicol (2.69%), and anisaldehyde (1.79%). At Princeton University (and many many other schools), the organic chemistry students do a steam distillation of the crushed seeds (from dried Star Anise flowers) to obtain the oil. Some to the components are actually foul-tasting and it might be best to use pure trans-anethole, though it's more expensive and probably seldom done.

Salmiac licorice is a northern European confection. Basically it's hard black licorice with ammonium chloride. The only reason I know about it is because it was offered to an anime character who thought it was chocolate and promptly threw up when she put a few in her mouth.
Let's just say I'm kinda glad Ikea didn't bring that and lutefisk over here.

That "Very interesting..." was actually from "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In"......though the guy that said it was dressed like a German soldier, so was very easy to confuse with Hogan's heroes. It was one of those quick cuts like they did with Goldie Hawn dancing and "Sock it to me time".

  • @Azriel1066

Main difference is that anise flavour comes from the seeds of Pimpinella Anisum, where liquorice comes from the roots of Glycyrrhiza Glabra. Anise is spicier in flavour and is not sweet. Liquorice root, on the other hand, is more mild and contains a natural sweetener that is 50 times sweeter than cane sugar.

  • @AhNee
    @AhNee Před 7 měsíci

Anise comes from Pimpinella anisum, licorice comes from Glycyrrhiza glabra. Most licorice candy in the US is flavoured with anise, because the glycyrrizhin in licorice root can cause edema and is dangerous if you have high blood pressure.

Haven't had yours, but i'm a fan of anise! Our pizzellas at chirstmas are anise--- one of my favorites! I like clove too... Clove gum, just chewing on one until my lips go numb! Have you ever done cardamom?

Here in the UK it's pronounced Aniseed and has been very popular since I was a child in the '60's. Seaside Rock is usually Aniseed flavoured. Over here, Cloves are used in food as a flavouring, but also they are used as a remedy for tooth ache and when the oil is rubbed on the gums it relieves the pain but it's also disgusting to taste.

1:14 "Veerrry interesting, but stupid" was Arte Johnson on Laugh-In, not Hogan's Heroes.
Schultz's line from Hogan's Heroes was, "I see nothing. NOTHING."

I enjoyed having licorice buttons from Meyer Brothers in Paterson NJ as a teen. Our cousins arrived from Holland with salt drops of varing degrees and shapes and sizes. I can buy Horehound candies at the local Heritage Park candy store. I love it all!!! In Calgary AB. Keep up the good work.

I used to hate black licorice as a kid, and came to love it after I graduated from high school. Oddly enough, my husband hated it until he tried an anise caramel I had gotten, and he loves it now.

It's always a Hercules vidya that drives each season home for me.. as of I've just been oblivious to the fact it's fall, or winter etc. One of these vidyas and it sinks in. The holiday spirit is around the corner. See ya next time yall ❤🎃🍂🍁..
