A performance with humour, that didn't happen so often in punk. In addition, "The Old Grey Whistle Test" was a great programme for me, because the musicians / groups had to show what they can do here on a small stage. So they often had to go back to their origins.
Aged 9, I can't decide what had a greater impact, Captain Sensible's keyboard solo, smashing up the keyboard or his fried egg tshirt. Quite frankly, it all seemed pretty outrageous when I went back to Barnsbury Primary school the next day.
I've been chain-consuming Damned videos for over a week now and I've completely fallen for them as a band and for Dave as a one-in-a-lifetime specimen, this band deserves to be praised, and it's wonderful to grow old with them, in each one of their passionate phases they have been outstanding, they've experimented stuff... in a very honest way.. I confess back in the day I was too much into Siouxsie and..., J. Division, etc. and didn't pay much attention to Damned... but now I have converted myself!!! And as for Dave.... as a young punk kid, as a mysterious dark lover, as a rockabilly crooner or today's version of a classy but dangerously attractive gentleman... he never failed to surprise and please us all... and we love him for that!!! Love Captain too!
That's Annie Nightingale introducing the band. She must have been aged at least in her early thirties or even aged around Forty at this point in time. She was very fashionable as a teenager early and in her early twenties ( check out photos of her in the 60s when I think she was a model some time in the 60s) She started to DJ back in the late 60s....she's now over 80 and still Radio DJing and is actually now big into Modern Techno music !!!
The damned could play to 500 spitting punks in a sweaty club, or just as easily do a slot on a kids TV show.. Dave vanian was the original goth.. paving the way for lux interior, Nick fiend, Andrew eldritch and countless others.. what a band 😁
Their 10th anniversary show was brilliant. Post-Captain but Roman Jugg was ace too. Annie was forever dreamy. Never knowingly uncool. Her and Peel kept new British music in the consciousness.
Annie Nightingale is 82.now.. Bless her.... She was on the punk rock Side when other radio 1 DJs constantly slagged it off. Even refusing to play it... She said if London Calling Made no1.she buy the clash a Cadillac.. She toured with the Police.
I watched this on the new year best of show as a 13 year old. Changed my life. Many decades later I still put the damned on and marvel how great they were during that 5 year period .
Before joining/forming The Damned Rat Scabies auditioned for a band who described themselves as `tasteful jazz-rock` .He `bashed fuck out the of the kit broke the snare drum stood up farted and waited for them to tell me to piss off- which they did `.
LOL-THEY ROCK SO F'n HARD- I remember when I was following love and rockets- I met a girl who followed the dammed and she shared w/ me among other precious details that a)1 of her friends slept w/ rat & both were judged &hated 4 it?!?!?!(That still amazes me I mean WTF isn't that the point ) and that dave drank white vinegar to enhance his alabaster skin and assist in fitting into even tighter pants- At a time when 1 might turn up the volume so not to hear the sad sound of the hammer hitting yet another nail in the coffin of R'nR- This video is inspiring as a Battle Cry or a Banshees' Howl-now show your support & start signing your name in drawn blud
A fantastic performance and a wonderful tribute memory of Dear Anne Nightingale who introduced probably the best punk performance here that was on the show
@Cecil Unit - And not long after quickly switching on Captain Sensible's keyboard amp for him, too! X-)) I've known this clip for a while now but noticed that for the first time only today! :-)) @ 3:00
@@mightyV444 haha! well spotted! Captain said he was so drunk he forgot to turn the sound down on the guitar which is why there is constant feedback throughout the song
@@Hempknight123 - It had taken me quite some time before I finally figuered this out myself, a while ago! x-)) So many moments in this performance that make me grin :-))
I wondered why he said that. Now I think it's because he sings the line "there's a price on your head" three times here even though it is only meant to be in the the song once! 😂
I just saw them 2 weeks ago! What a great fucking show! I hadn't ever listened to their music. My most awesome gf said, I bought you a ticket because you should see them. My short little ass was right up there on the floor!!
You know wat!!! The last time i saw damned on "Batofar" in Paris(small place for a big bang ,heu!!!! band) There was a rat dancing on the dock of the Seine.
RIP Annie Nightingale 12th January 2024. Great D.J and pioneer of women in music media.
By far one of the best punk bands ever & still going hard today, cess it all.
Nevermind punk, one of the best bands ever, period.
A performance with humour, that didn't happen so often in punk. In addition, "The Old Grey Whistle Test" was a great programme for me, because the musicians / groups had to show what they can do here on a small stage. So they often had to go back to their origins.
Classic punk rock music from the masters

goddamned Dave Vanian was hot
he actually stills looks good for his age, one of the few old punks who isn't fat and bloated haha
DJ Hex He didn't age bad at all really. but he was a lot hotter around this time.
ah yeah the funny part is I'm beginning to think he's a vampire, saw a pic of him lately and he hasn't aged much :P
Was, and still is. I can't get over it.
At the wonderful age of 62 is still super hot
'Don't wanna be a sucker like all the rest...' What a lyric!!

6:04 love it how Dave Vanian reaction is what was done with the drums when he also was so drunk love the reaction on his vampire face
I'm in love with vanian!
Who isn't?!
I'm a straight male, and -I- am in love with Dave. As well as with his wife, Patricia Morrison. They're like a real life Morticia and Gomez.
The studio is haunted by The Who. LOL! She handled that well.
Who is the presenter?
@Bad Lieutenant 👍🏼.

How cool Dave looked then and still looks now in 2017.
Haha Dave reaction at 6 min + when he finally put the mic down. Loved it.
6:12 the way Rat reacts to realizing he is now front and center with that stare kills me.
it's hot tbh
I could feel the awkwardness through the screen!
Centre
It’s called amphetamine!
I saw them live last week and must say they’re still very energetic and one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.
Dave, beautiful dark angel
RIP Annie Nightingale, 1940-2024.
I have the fattest crush on Dave lmao. Viva THE DAMNED
Stunning Dave Vanian
Wet your knickers again
This is all kinds of cute. love it when the candleabra falls off the keyboard! :D
Their 10th anniversary show was brilliant. Post-Captain but Roman Jugg was ace too.
Annie was forever dreamy. Never knowingly uncool. Her and Peel kept new British music in the consciousness.
Vanian taped the mic to his hand xD
Georgio16100 omg I thought that was a glove until I read your comment lolol
he was too drunk and he kept dropping it so that was his idea
What The???🤣🤣🤣🤣
Maybe it was very heavy, did u thought that? Nobody gives a f about the bloody mic
Bloody drunks getting into show biz .I don't know

Brilliant! remember watching this when it was broadcast and holding my old cassette deck up to the telly to record the sound :)
Me too, 😂😂👍
Love how Rat gets all Keith Moon on the drums while Vanian and Algy are just like, okay, whatever, we're done huh?
RIP Annie 🙏 you'll be sadly missed.

You need (ed) a sense of humor to truly appreciate The Damned. Still love them!
+Maureen Sullivan Yeah - if I want to laugh, I watch their video
This is why I love them. Weird and funny! Legends!
+Rose Bud Totally!
+Maureen Sullivan Besides being adorable; )
+Maureen Sullivan oh ofcourse! 😊 lovable lads! ☺️
So much to laugh at in this 'performance'. Dave is so magnetic and sexy here.
Apparently Dave Vanian is still grumpy with Captain Sensible to this day for tossing the organ off the stage - because it was his! X-))
RIP Algy 🙏 💜
RIP Algy
We seen this at the time and we all next day started walking around school corridors like Dave dancing lol. Havoc.

R.I.P Annie Nightingale. ❤
when bands played live....and acted on the spur of the moment!
That look Scabies gives the camera at 6:12...😳
Keyboards for Dummies!!!!!! Still works though.
Well worth checking out the whole discography esp Black Album and Strawberries
Smash it up - classic Damned track.
RIP Algy and Annie.
Algy with the bass part at the very end cracks me up hahaha
Yes that made me smile because I used to do something similar on my bass whenever our guitarist through a strop, but I made it go na na nan na nah..
The best outro possible
"Now pick all that up"
as soon as the camera went off. 😂
What a wonderful shambles.
I'm guessing Vanian was cracking up at 3:22 after Sensible's guitar and candles fell over and was trying to hide it.
Lol, spot on

One of the greatest live TV performances by any band ever!
Shambolic brilliance,class!
first album was pure class up there with the clash and pistols.
Jesus christ, this is fucking incredible!!!
I cannot heap enough praise upon The Damned. What a great fucking band!
Now that's entertainment!!
Seen them three times in last few years, awesome live. The best band at Rebellion 2015 by a distance imo.
I seriously wonder if Keith Moon taught Rat Scabies how to play the drums?
Rat has admitted his influence.
This is really very good.
"There's a price on your... head, three times" who's cooler than Dave lol
I wondered why he said that. Now I think it's because he sings the line "there's a price on your head" three times here even though it is only meant to be in the the song once! 😂
Truly one of the great band performances on TV.

Not the best time to read the keyboard Manuel during your televised live show, but that’s “The Damned.”
So sad to hear about Algy 💔
RIP Annie.
the candle fall down XD epic!!
Debacle! Love it.
Love it!!
