    I like your dialogue. I was handed the album and ordered to record it onto cassette for a party in 1977, my dad had a good hifi. Those VU meters worked hard. I had never heard anything like it. It was constant. The party was a milestone in our lives, pogoing, strobe lights, spitting beer, string vests bin liners, lots of booze, and a problem teddy boy.

      HaHa. I had to get my mum to repair all the holes he had cut in the front of it. He wrote me a letter in pencil saying he would bring it over on the tour but over the years the pencil faded away and it's virtually invisible now except for the side note by Johnny Moped which is in pen. So, kinda hard to prove it's the real deal now.

      In Punky Reggae Party, released in 1977, Bob Marley mentions The Damned, The Jam, The Clash and Dr Feel good. That gives a fairly good impression of what was though at the time.
      One could easily include The Stranglers, I saw them and the others in 1970s. Apart from Dr Feelgood, unfortunately I never got to see them. I'm 61 this year and occasionally see people I'm still friends with from that time. If I think of them I don't see them as they are now, but how they were when 17.

    Interesting overview! At the time, the rivalry and outright animosity between the bands was mainly encouraged by the managers, McClaren (Pistols), Jake Riviera (Damned) and Bernie Rhodes (Clash), all squabbling for Supremacy among each other and using the bands as a means to an end. Not good.
    It's arguably why the whole 'movement', if you could call it that and keep a straight face, fell apart so quickly.
    I'm reminded of the Howard Devoto quote upon leaving Buzzcocks;
    "What was once frighteningly new had become a clean old hat..."
    Ok, Howard. Point taken. I think.
    But all that aside, the Damned were always my band of choice; they did what it said on the tin! No pretence, no political posturing (although politics Were there, in a very veiled and personal way) and no real slavish following of what came to be seen as 'Punk Fashion'.
    None of the early bands looked like each other. The Pistols didn't look like the Clash, the Clash didn't look like the Stranglers, the Stranglers didn't look like Buzzcocks, Buzzcocks didn't look like the Jam...
    The Damned didn't look like each other! That's why they'll always be THE Punk band to me.
    And if anybody doesn't agree, fuck 'em...😡😂✊👍👍👍

    In terms of commercial success though, The Stranglers outdid the Clash and The Damned in the UK anyway, during 1977, in the UK, though they never had big success in the US and long term, The Clash outdid them internationally. They were often cold shouldered by some pink purists and you could debate whether they were really "punk". (Though the Damned to some extent were also considered punk pariahs to some extent and not considered "cool" by some, just like The Stranglers. I think the two bands had a certain affinity with each other and got on fairly well, partially because they were shunned by the self appointed arbiters of cool!) I'm a fan of all the bands I've mentioned by the way!

    First punk single in the UK was the Damned. But if you go to France or Belgium that a different matter. Damned Flame/Blast from Belgium is proto punk metal from 1972 and Strike Up Strike Up from France from Nov' 76 but started in '74, stuff is mental. Way ahead of the game. British always thought they were first. No way! No one wants to believe or even write the history books again. These two tracks are integral to any collection and or documentary.

    Yep, they were the main three bands of that time. I’d say the only other band that comes close to being part of that original scene is Buzzcocks, just because they played their first show at the Pistols’ second Manchester show in 76. I love all their stuff up to the Friday The 13th ep, although I only got into that recently. Before that I stopped at The Black Album/There Ain’t No Sanity Claus ep.
