Re Gospel anti-semitism, there are subtle instances that might not be obvious. Jesus is seen apparently at odds with the Pharisees. Yet, Jesus uses Pharisee arguments and positions against their supposed positions. In all these passages, read "Sadducee" for the written "Pharisee" and suddenly these passages make sense. Why distance Jesus from the Pharisees? Perhaps because Rabbinic Judaism is the surviving branch of Pharisaic Judaism.

@RedTiger Although I agree with Jews copying elements from older religions, I disagree with your view that is was the Christians who invented the concept of of "savior" (soter in Greek). This title was given to many gods in other much older religions and to the goddess Isis herself. Jesus was a latecomer to that title.

So u need to know a secret before you can experience Jesus healing energy. So I had a bounty on my head put on me from the devil himself. So I obtained the Elijah spirit from heaven. But I was a lost sheep. That means once I believed an then I didn't.
So it didn't work for me as well.
The devil sent a tin can full of fallen angels. An f in big foots
I destroyed all of them. But they could turn back time then an they brought all back but couldn't bring back the big foots.
An left me the same. 167 stitches broken back. Paralyze left hand an a carbon fiber right shine bone. So the devil seen I could pull energy from other energy an wanted me to heal an get stronger an then take my power.
So he had me train in hell fighting
I got so strong when I go to train my training partners would be hiding an wouldn't show there self they would rather hide from me knowing D was going to torture them. Anyhow I ended up after fighting through the ranks ripping the soul out the devil after he went dragon just to make it a fair fight. So now u can experience Jesus healing energy
All old aches and pains will be washed away takes 30 minutes
Best to relax and shut yr eyes😮

I read Pagels’ book on gnostic texts around the time that The DaVinci Code blew up and I was an undergrad in biblical history at a fundamentalist Christian college. Her book blew my mind and was another stop in my escape from that world and into the rich world of comparative mythology.

But never had the heart to read them. Then I retired and a friend showed me a wall full of books and there was Elaine Pagel's book: Beyond Belief. What does your ethnic background have to do with anything you said? Why did you need to mention that you're Black? If you left that out, would it change any of the rest of your comment? Then why mention it? Maybe I should begin my comments with, "As an Anglo-Nordic descendent of settlers who came to the New World 400 years ago..." and then follow that with stuff that has nothing to do with my ethnicity. That wouldn't be obnoxious or anything, would it? That wouldn't cause people to think I was obsessed with ethnicity, right?

In the book On the Origins of the World, the serpent is Eve and Eve is the Spirit of Life itself and not just a scorned woman. Infact, she brought Life and the Truth to Adam, whom the rulers (Yaldaboath) tried to deceive because they were terrified of Adam realizing he is divine, and they were jealous of Eve's powerful divine spirit. If you are surprised by the idea that Jesus was the serpent, you must not be very educated. He is thought to be Lucifer as well.

When I was young, 8 decades ago, I was a devout christian, family went to church every Sunday. On the occasional winter day when it snowed, I would organize a church service for my younger brother and sister. I read the Bible cover-cover with a flashlight, under my covers to allow me to read, whereas my parents demanded I turn off the lights and sleep. As an adolescent, I began to meditate while driving tractor, or stop for a while to wander down to the creek and lie in the tall grass and drift with the clouds. As a young adult I attended a Christian college where some doubt was cast about Jesus that created a desire to know the original teachings of Jesus. One day while I was writing an assignment on the blackboard for my students, poetry began to flow as I wrote. My students asked if they were supposed to copy the poem. I told them they could if they wished, but I was going to. That happened again and again. Half a century later I discovered in writing a memoir, my poetry was a Gnostic Christianity that echoed early Christian writers of the 1st & 2nd century. They seemed to be similar to the original teachings of Jesus--an answer to my prayer

I identify strongly with her story of personal religious experiences throughout adolescence. My household was perhaps less religious in some ways and the "nondenominational" homechurch based - Christian cult I encountered as a teen may have been somewhat different than her experience, but my reason for leaving that "church" is very similar to Elaines reasoning. I genuinely have the same interest in the subject as she did when she chose to go to college for it.

The whole interview is interesting, but I would like to comment on the last twenty minutes or so when Professor Pagels starts talking about the inner light/energy and insight. Discovering this light/energy or insight has been the most surprising and meaningful thing in my life. Personally, I came to the realization through meditation practice and through studying 'eastern' traditions like Advaita Vedanta, Tibetan Dzogchen and Mahamudra and then discovered the comparable wisdom traditions of the 'west' (i.e. philo + sophia), which can be traced back at least as far as Ancient Greece. An excellent starting point for the curious would be Arthur Versluis work on Platonic Mysticism. He lays out the Platonic influence within Islam (Suffism), Judaism (Kaballah) and neo-Platonic strains of Christianity (Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, Eckhardt etc). I hope you all encounter and enjoy this wonderful treasure!

As a fairly fundamental Xian I used to hear the same disparaging and nasty comments about Elaine. Now I realize how spot on she is. Sorry Elaine.

She keeps talking about fictional character named Jesus no word about the other fictional character called Satan..She is a professor of fictional characters in a book of fiction Called the bib le. In Jewish court of law, the Satan is the complaint.Just like the Unicorn and Santa Claus and the big bad Wolfe, all made-up fairy-tales.Holy Roman Empire my Foot full of Holes ie Ass Holes, all these professors should be called Profakers.

@@petecarroll3949 She has many words about Satan. She discusses a group of works as fiction and as reality, possibly literal possibly metaphorical. Consider modern science fiction; no matter where or when it's set, it's about here and now.

Also you make a decision about something without having all the info you can still be wrong.
And even if wrong you'll still fight and hold on to your decision to the death.
Still, that's ok with me. When it comes to God, it's not impossible that someone might just have more info than you.
Still ok with me if you say God is a lie. That's just because you think your smart.
