In this series, I'm doing a part tutorial, part vlog, part timelapse of my 1989 Toyota mk1 MR2 AW11 restoration.
This episode I get started on two big and tedious projects: repainting wheels and sewing new seat covers. Plus some smaller repairs and fun stuff.
Work in this video:
Cutting seat covers for reupholstering
Replacing speedometer cable
Removing parking brake cable
Sanding wheels
Making a snap oversteer sticker
Cutting and sewing seats pieces
Painting toy car - Auta a dopravní prostředky

I work on the car almost everyday right now and post updates to my Instagram story so check that specifically. Sometimes I even run polls on there too.
I also have another episode filmed already that I just need to edit so hopefully I can get that up soon!
Check out the patreon and Venmo in the description to help support the channel and project if you want! But more importantly thanks for watching.
Long road ahead of you, awesome series.
Yeah at the time of filming this I was definitely in a “what have I gotten myself into” state of mind. But now that the third episode is filmed and in editing I gotta say, it gets much better. Lots of hours spent but it’ll all be worth it I’m sure.
I bought a 1987 MR2 but have been pretty nervous about diving into projects on it (it’s my first ever project car, and no one in my family has any car experience). These videos are helpful for seeing how you did it, but also to see how much trial and error goes into these projects. Honestly seeing you struggle on the upholstery is helping me be ok with goofing stuff up and trying again. Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks! I’m hoping to get the fourth vid up soon but now that classes have started since the last one it’s been slow.
I’m glad to hear they’re helpful cuz that’s part of why I’m doing these. So many people just think working on cars to make them run and look nice has to be expensive or really hard. It does cost a bit and does take work but it’s all totally doable. I’m no expert myself. Just do some research and give things a shot. And get creative with stuff. Making something custom and restored doesn’t mean having to buy all new expensive performance stuff.
Definitely stay tuned cuz once the car gets back on the road I wanna do more mechanical stuff and a full tune up as I feel out what’s needed. If you’re new to cars then a tune up / fluid change will go a long way in teaching you basics and keeping your car alive and fresh.
Anyways thanks for watching and good luck! Hmu on insta or comments here if you got any questions!
Onya! Love that you’re prepared to go old school and hand sew. And on the subject of door buzzers, that’s why I won’t be buying a recently made car anytime soon; too many beeps, flashes, bells and other annoyances! Keep up the good work.
I love that noise😂
Hey this guy likes the aw11!
You’re an awesome kid! Way to show some ingenuity and motivation. Way to get a team together to accomplish your goals!
Recently got an aw11 too found the series on reddit and wanted to say keep up the great work and the "high snap oversteer risk" sticker is awesome!
Thanks for giving the series a watch from there! And yeah I got way mote footage but just need to catch up on editing. Working on the car is just more exciting hahaha.
As for the sticker, thanks! I still wanna clean it up a bit and may add more stuff to it like one of those triangle hazard symbols with the ! in it. Plus may add some small text describing snap oversteer and how to cause it to make it look more like a real warning label.
@@RetraCast Good to hear it and would like to see an update on the sticker in a future vid
Oh yeah of course. Gotta film everything hahaha
Make the center caps with cardboard cutouts then measure the depth of the circle 🔴 and use A aluminum siding sheet to make the caps then paint them.Or 3D print them out.
I love having a die cast car to match a project car! cant wait for the future of this series.
Yeah it’ll give me something to look at on the desk and get excited for. Hoping it comes out decent the second time around. Tbh I probably shouldn’t even be so picky about it haha
Ah, the calling call of the mr2
Great work kid! I like the detail in cleaning up the crusty interior screws. 87 MR2 was my first project car and taught me a lot. Take care of the car. I miss mine a lot.
Love this series
Dang you are on it hahaha. Vid just came out. Love the support!
RetraCast got the notifications on
Another great video!
Nice job!
Such a great channel man, love it!
Great video, well filmed, really enjoy watching.
A good way to get more aggressive with the wire brushing of those screws is to push them into a piece of cardboard. Then you're not wire brushing your finger tips.
That’s brilliant
I would definitely buy that oversteer warning as a patch or sticker for my 2
A patch of it would super dope too! Though idk the cost or process of making custom patches
Awesome to see you working on it bro, can’t wait to see the end product 👍🏼 keep at it
the person who disliked it did it by mistake
That or they’re disappointed in my sub par sewing skills. I don’t blame them lol
0:26 same
Hey man, great project!
In the future for sewing things with 3 dimensional shape, what you want to use is a high post sewing machine. They are used by bag and footwear makers and I am sure if you find a cobbler in your area or a shoe repair shop they would have one they could let you use.
You also need special needles when sewing leather/vinyl that actually have a more chisel shaped end to them, allowing them to cut through the thicker material without increasing the hole size for the thread.
Hope this helps!
Thanks, that does help. I’ll probably be sewing stuff again at some point so I’ll keep this in mind
Primer then paint
You should've use aircraft paint remover on the wheels , apply and leave for 15 to 20 min and all paint was going to be off really easy and then just minor sanding required, as for the intake it was on the right place since it was geeting cold air from the vent, but like you said rain could get there , but theres other options ,theres one with an inclosure filter and a flexi hose so you can redirect you air catch maybe from one of the side scoops, i did that on my mr2 mk3 , nice video 👌
Yeah looking back that probably woulda been a better option on the wheels.
As for the intake I have been looking at it and am curious if it’s even better than the stock version. Cuz the stock uses air from the side scoop which seems like it’d be much colder than air in the engine bay. The only advantage I can think of with this is it’s a shorter route for air flow since the stock has to flow all the way around the trunk to get to the intake.
Either way, not worth hunting down and reinstalling a stock intake at this point though. I may take your idea and try to route some cold air to the filter though. Not sure how big of a difference it’d make but may be worth a try..
The door buzzer! I took a water bottle cap & placed it over the button & under the gasket to hold the button in! FIXED!
My life has been a lot more peaceful since removing it hahaha
Found your channel looking for recent X-H1 reviews and it then it turns out you’re in the PNW and you’re into cars as well! Love the channel man, subscribing and looking forward to more of this mr2 project! 🤙🏼
Thanks! I’m actually considering reviewing my new X-T4 at some point too haha. I got another MR2 video in editing but classes started back up so I’m still just settling back in while I schedule my video work more sparingly. Hoping to get it up this week though.
Anyways thanks again for checking me out! Super excited to do a more normal video on the MR2 when it’s back on the road. If you haven’t, check out my recent Celica video. I totally wanna do an intro like that but bigger for the MR2
RetraCast Oh nice!! Please review the X-T4 as well, your perspective coming from the H1 would be super helpful. Depending on a couple things i might save up the extra for an X-T4 but we’ll see! Will check out the Celica video for sure, and best of luck with classes!
Hand stitch the headrest ok
Bro im gonna smash the crap out of my door buzzer
That pin on etsy was made by the guy who owned my aw11 before I owned it. Its color scheme is the same as the car was before some drift kids ruined it. I regret selling it but I like my SW20 more.
If you wanna see it there's pics on his instagram (on the card) and on mine @sw201444
That’s crazy coincidence. I’ll have to check it out. I just assumed it was made up for the pin or an art
@@RetraCast Yeah the paint was seriously faded but was red/silver. so will give you an idea of what the color combo would look like
How many miles does it have?
A bit under 150,000 if I remember right. But that’s just on the odometer. The speedometer cable broke so it’s not accurate. Who knows how much over that it is.
What is the music you use in your videos?
Also very good video!
I actually make it all myself. It’s why you hear the same like 5 tracks in all the videos cuz I can only write so much in my free time hahaha
@@RetraCast I actually really like it lol, good job!
Did you study as a mechanic? How do u know what to do man 😅
I got an 88 MR2 I’m selling. I’m located in Katy, Texas
