I remember you waxing lyrical about this in conjunction with the Tarkowski, and it's been in the back of my mind since...I was very lucky, by chance stumbling on this voice whilst looking for something else, and similarly it would have remained work in progress... Yes, it's amazing, beautiful is almost too crude a word and find it just about impossible not to blub every time.
@@grahamcaldecott I know - it is in my opinion a piece of such pathos to be almost unbearable. Yet it is not sad, or at least not for me. I remember an interview when John Eliot Gardiner was asked about sadness in Bach, and he said that for him Bach is never sad, but instead sometimes brings a quality of comfort, almost resignation.
I completely agree, and I wish I could find that interview. Beethoven can be unbearably sad, I've never thought of Bach's music to be sad, even in pieces like this one, or the Chaconne. I know that perhaps I am leaving my imagination run wild, but this piece for me evokes everything human, or perhaps the realisation of the tragedy of the human condition, our resignation to higher schemes, and yet it brings peace.
@@OrzoMondo Yes, I pretty much agree with him, Bach takes to a you place that is a million miles away from sad.
