I never understood this statement when these anime games are literally advertised and meant to be a fighting game. When you see these games in stores they are categorized as fighting games. Everytime soomeone says this they can never give a clear reason why its always something vague so my assumption is because it doesn't fit your image of a fighting game therefore it isn't one. What exactly qualifies as a fighting game anyways?

Kill La Kill If is by far the best arena fighter in terms of feeling like an actual competent fighting game, but it was unfortunately dead before it even released. I also think One's Justice is pretty solid, but there are things that annoy me about it. Overall, I like the IDEA of arena fighters and feel they have a lot of untapped potential; it's just that most of them are admittedly bad and shallow.
As far as Clorox, I'm cool with it and in a way I'm glad it's an arena fighter because all the whining about arena fighters over the last 6 years has gotten beyond insufferable. Even moreso when the same people complaining just want every single thing to just be a fighterz clone or another generic open world game.

So, I don't instantly think of arena fighters in a negative light, but I do understand that more often then not that they are subpar cash grabs. This art style and fidelity of the game already look amazing so I'm hoping that this is just a sneak peak at what is to come. As someone that loves bleach, is a fan of 2d fighters and its not a fan of arena fighters I always held the belief that if we ever get a brand new Bleach game it HAS to be an arena fighter. Because Bleach has been out of the console videogame market for a hell of awhile, so they need to get as many people behind this game as possible, and it turns out arena fighters are loved by the casuals(seriously is the reason why we got so many). So with that logic it makes sense why it should be one. But the more important part is if its good and will it sell, because if it does we are definitely getting more Bleach games in the future, and hopefully Ill get that 2d Bleach fighter that I desperately want

I don't understand, (anime) arena fighting games are technically fighting games (two characters, or groups of characters, fighting each other to deplete their other's health bar), just not in a traditional sense.
That being said, a good amount of the stigma surrounding these games stem from them being understandably, catered to casuals and/or having its gameplay being usually designed in such a way in which the "meta" may not be enjoyable to play and or watch, especially for people in thr FGC/have experience with traditional fighting games. (Just watch Daz is Bambo's "A Deep Dive In Competitive Naruto Storm" video for reference).
Funny enough, the (anime) FGC seems to have accepted the Gundam VS games and occasionally gets set up at majors here and there. (Honorable mention goes to the Kill la Kill game too, but the fact that Arc System Works was involved in some capacity, may have had a hand in that by virtue of the "halo effect" they have with the FGC, but deservedly so, thanks to their consistent track record with FGs).

just say the words "arena fighter" and watch them flip a lid go into a frenzy and in the same breath watch them glaze a hopeful power stone 3 or any other pre 2010 arena fighter like custom robo, or heavy metal on the dreamcast, or virtual-on.

Arena fighters have been trash for a long time, and Capcom is a developer you could trust to make a great arena fighter out of Power Stone, the same way Square Enix made a great arena fighter with the Dissidia Final Fantasy games on PSP. Also 2D fighters are more fun to play than any modern day arena fighter, and they are no longer "90's style of combat", once developers ditched that same mindest it revived the fighting game genre. Now I'm still excited for Bleach but I get the frustration people have with it being an arena fighter, the issue is that there are too many arena fighters coming out that are just trash, if this game is good people will be happy.

I personally have a really special connection to the Bleach series as a whole because it was a show I watched during a very dark period of my life and knowing that the first console game we are getting for it after 13 years is going to possibly be yet another Arena fighter disappoints. The reason being the history of Arena fighters are filled with lazy cash grabs that barely put any effort into making themselves appealing to people who really care about the source material and are used to really prey on your money. It happened to me with Jump Force and a lot of other series who instead of getting fleshed out genuine video games instead got the same rehashed arena fighter for the billionth time. It never feels like there is love put into an arena fighter and it instead just feels like a “here man damn!!” Type of deal. I find that a component of the hate arena fighters get is that they tend to not be as hyperbalanced as most other fighting games especially now, but this hyperemphasis on balance pretty frequently removes a lot of really fun maneuvers preempts the idea of intentionally overpowered boss characters or underpowered joke characters altogether, and never actually stops the issue of the meta stagnating as players just find the most overpowered characters and strategies and repeat ad naseum eschewing balance in favour of say adaptational loyalty or just fun factor is essentially a lateral move as far as how repetitive and stale metas go. Plus matchmaking filters are a thing and have been for awhile even alternate versions of characters where one is the competitive balanced version and the other is a boss variant have also existed for ages so there is a way to have one's cake and eat it too but it just never gets implemented anymore, maybe due to development costs but still it bites.

if the game doesn't ship with sternritters or tybw stuff at launch, it'll be such a pain in the ass, since that's the main reason I'd care. Not to mention the fact that there's basically no way they have the budget for a big enough roster to be worth the full price they inevitably charge

Anime licensed games have been casual afternoon entertainment in Japan ever since Shonen Jump titles came out on the Famicom. People need to keep the expectations low, because wanting the PS2 fma titles to play like DMC or have a Bleach fighter as fluent as Soul Calibur is quite a high bar to reach.
The only times when they had trials to give you an incentive; Elemental Gelade, and Bleach: Heat the Soul. Bleach GC probably does have combos if you tinker with it, but that was a Japan only title that remained in obscurity in front of the popularity Clash of Ninja received due to the first two getting localized. To this day, it doesn't have any combo videos.

Having said that, although i love the Budokai Tenkaichi series, I'd still rather have a more traditional fighting game for Bleach, since I'm part of the FGC, I really hope that this game surprises me. Bleach is my favorite of the Big 3 anime by FAR, so I'd love if we could have a good Bleach game after so long. So far, the game is looking kinda cool, but I'll still maintain low expectations since, at the end of the day, it is an arena fighter.

I'll like it if its fast and fluid. Everytime I've played something like Storm 4 I feel so slow and clunky
