I'm a weirdo who loves the snow here. I love the cozy feeling of being snowed in while toasty warm inside. Most of the suburbs get their plows out early and often. And while we sometimes get a ton of snow, it's not really super cold here compared to say North Dakota.
Another benefit…a 90 minute drive to Toronto for great food, baseball games, and culture. Toronto is top two for the best cities for food in North America!

Some of my earliest memories of Buffalo were driving through there on the way to visit family in Detroit way back in the 70’s. There were tons of steel mills at that time and it always kind of seemed like the twilight zone to me. I guess it’s changed a lot if you young professionals are digging it now!
Been here since June 2022, I will add that the city takes pride in its own identity. There are Buffalo statues everywhere, 716, Buffalo Bills and Sabres art everywhere. The people here love their sports teams. I drive the city buses here and still learning this and that but I will say I’d love to buy a home in Amherst

I left in 1983. The economy was hammered and I left for work. Settled down in California for 40 years. No regrets. Cali is in decline, but once you leave the cities, it’s like living in Italy. I enjoy coming back to Buffalo to visit relatives. It’s really recovered. People are very friendly in Buffalo. My mom had a mini stroke and was driving her car. A lady saw her in her confusion and was able to help her. This happened just 2 years ago.
I did the Pointing Rick Dalton meme when you said you’ll never get stranded in the snow in Buffalo! Born and raised in Buffalo but spent most my adult hood in Orlando. In 2002 when I was in high school I lived in the east side, walking back home one night after picking up some avenues pizza there was a ladies car stuck in the snow on Holden st. Me and my uncle helped her out and then shared some wings with her. I love my city and hope to one day return for good.
Grew up in Williamsville. I'll echo the help your neighbor comment. Mom my went out for groceries just before the blizzard of 77 hit. Got stranded on a side street. Went up to a random house and knocked on the door. They let her in and the husband brought her home in his truck. If you can tolerate the snow, everything you said about the community is true.
I am from India and had been to buffalo in 2016 & 2018 as part of work where i worked in hsbc 95 washington street and used to stay in williamsville , windsong apartments and i cherish all those moments and share the memories with family now :)
I currently live in Miami, Florida, but next month, I'll be relocating to Buffalo because of my job. I had the chance to visit Buffalo last week, and it was definitely a beautiful place. Very old fashion. Also cold, but nothing some layering can't help. I'll be honest, although I loved the place, moving out to another state to live on my own has me pretty scared, but I'm hoping that once things are in motion and I find my routine in Buffalo, I'll come to love the place and feel comfortable. And this video certainly helps.

Absolutely agree the architecture is incredible and the art. We lived in Allentown *Mariner Street< Hang out on Allen street though on a weekend and see how quiet things are. ;) You are right about the food IMHO - great stuff around every corner. Much of it specific to Buff. I've been to a lot of cities in the world so far the only place that rivals Buff is Hamburg Germany though I never did get to Seoul except virtually.

However, I would like to know and/or watch a video on the winter time, I’ve heard you get about 7 to 8 feet of snow and after watching Grumpy Old Men, and Fargo, I don’t know that I’d be able to deal with that much snow I’m retiring and looking for a place to retire that has seasonal weather. @@joronomo707 we get snow sometimes daily in the winter! It usually starts to snow around November, and is quite bad in December - February, and then eases in March!

Yessss i would highly recommend the move! I’ve been so happy moving from Long Island. The cons are that it’s not a huge city but the friendliness and cost of living makes up for it!
The crime is bad even in the so called good areas. It can get sketchy at any moment. The food is crap. The weather is horrible. The roads are bad. The people are rude and often very sketchy. Spend more than a few days there before you make up your mind.

I know there is crime in any city, but wondering what parts of the city you would recommend avoiding? We are looking to live near Buffalo Academy for Visual Arts. Which is near Cold Springs. I see apartment listings for Elmwood Village, Bryant and Allentown.
Hey Henry!! I think that the elmwood village is the best area for you guys!! It’s so quaint and definitely the safest of the three areas, although none are dangerous in my opinion. I think you’ll fall in love with elmwood though!!
Public schools suck here. I agree that Elmwood would be a good area, but then you'd want to send your kid to private school. I think a better option would be moving to Amherst. There are good public schools in Amherst. Stay away from places such as Lovejoy and areas of East Buffalo.
South Buffalo! I highly recommend it. Tim Russert grew up there and his schools still are some of the very best. Grew up all over Buffalo. For cost of housing, activities for kids, sense of family-community and traditions South Buffalo has all the elements of a well rounded upbringing giving your child a clear view of all aspects of city life. They will well educated in excellent private schools peppered with real life street smarts. They won't be naive and vulnerable when they begin college and get into trouble exploring the unknown dangers out in the real world. It's very important to be able to get glimpses of it in your growing years. Not a part of your life, but seen enough to know how important it is to avoid it. Just one of the myriad of excellent reasons I would love my kids to live in this completely overlooked area of Buffalo.

Your bubbly attitude towards Buffalo isn't convincing to people who live in downstate especially NYC, but I've always liked Upstate NY's rust belt charm, and small town America regardless. It's probably even better now when there are more things to do and eat.
Her bubbly attitude isn't convincing the people who moved away either. This video is a fake as she is. Buffalo has been in a huge decline for over 30 years now and the winters absolutely suck along with the insanely high property taxes. The area lost 85% of its manufacturing jobs in the '90s causing a massive exodus of people to states that were growing. We lived there until we were in our early 40s, moved South and never looked back and when we go back for high school reunions, only a small group of people still live there.
It sucks! 7 years I've lived here (in multiple areas) and have not once seen a trick or treater. I do NOT like Buffalo, and I'm leaving as soon as I get everything sold off.
I am moving to Buffalo as a woman of color with a doctoral degree from California, I find the rent fairly expensive. I will be living downtown I am worried about rodents. I hear they are everywhere. Is that true?

I grew up in the City of Tonawanda which has lost 1/3 of its small population since the '70s and now has one elementary school for the whole city as opposed to the eight that it had when I was growing up there in the '60s and 70s. NAFTA killed 80% of the manufacturing jobs and most of the jobs were in manufacturing. Kids didn't ask you if your father worked in a factory, they asked you which factory your father worked at and the area has yet to recover. This clueless woman, used to New York City prices would be happy but no realist is going to pretend that brutal Buffalo winters, lack of job opportunities, crippling property taxes, crime and the rust belt feel of the whole area doesn't exist.
@@jbethjs I like Buffalo....its the weather I can't take. I lived in Buffalo (born there) 9 years from 59-67 & fort erie 20! (Same weather, just across the river) I remember one summer it rained every weekend! July 1992 8.93 inches of rain. I live in the Sonoran desert now and 'Wish' it would rain.....just a bit! I remember in the 60's epic rain and thunder shaking the windows....that was cool. I think if you live in western New York, southern Ontario, you appreciate the sunny days more than someone like me, who only sees clouds 19% of the time as apposed to 57%. I do miss the spring when everything suddenly pops up! Please don't think I'm a Buffalo Beater.....Just a bit too much rain....especially with arthritis now. Ive never gone back since 2000 when I moved. I see alot of changes. I will always have a love for Buffalo.....especially the food. -Martin from the west side!
Buffalo and WNY are anything but affordable. The property taxes on the house we sold when left there in '96 are now over $8,000 a year when the same thing down here in Clayton NC near Raleigh costs us about $1,800 a year and to act as if Buffalo winters aren't brutally cold, snowy and gray is not showing the whole picture. The expression there is that Buffalo has two seasons, winter and the 4th of July.

I spent part of a day in Buffalo earlier this week and I gotta say I was not at all impressed. Much of the city is really run down and just feels kinda like a city that hasn’t recovered from some kind of economic downturn. Can’t find an actual restaurant anywhere it seems like the whole damn city has nothing but bars and cafes. Even Allentown, which is Buffalo’s historic/hipster district was kinda ghetto. Plus I heard the winters are horrible.

I’ve been to various states we had to pay tolls for pretty much every single one if we we’re coming from another state, in particular Jersey has an exorbitant quantity of tolls. But in general if you live on these islands you do not have to pay a toll to travel amongst them except Staten Island. NYC is still apart of the United States though much more so then common wealth like Puerto Rico respectfully to Puerto Rico which should be a state.
@@jeffgolden253 BTW us residents still have to pay the toll if we are coming back from another state to NYC I know it’s expensive and frustrating but no one can bypass the tolls. Staten Island has $20 toll for non residents so consider yourself lucky you don’t have to go to Staten Island they are the most notoriously expensive toll and Jersey is up there with the amount of tolls you have to pay It’s insane.

Yessss i would highly recommend the move! I’ve been so happy moving from Long Island. The cons are that it’s not a huge city but the friendliness and cost of living makes up for it!

The crime is bad even in the so called good areas. It can get sketchy at any moment. The food is crap. The weather is horrible. The roads are bad. The people are rude and often very sketchy. Spend more than a few days there before you make up your mind.

I know there is crime in any city, but wondering what parts of the city you would recommend avoiding? We are looking to live near Buffalo Academy for Visual Arts. Which is near Cold Springs. I see apartment listings for Elmwood Village, Bryant and Allentown.
Hey Henry!! I think that the elmwood village is the best area for you guys!! It’s so quaint and definitely the safest of the three areas, although none are dangerous in my opinion. I think you’ll fall in love with elmwood though!!
Public schools suck here. I agree that Elmwood would be a good area, but then you'd want to send your kid to private school. I think a better option would be moving to Amherst. There are good public schools in Amherst. Stay away from places such as Lovejoy and areas of East Buffalo.
stay away from cold springs. North Buffalo and South Buffalo is where it is safe , and put your kid in a catholic school .

South Buffalo! I highly recommend it. Tim Russert grew up there and his schools still are some of the very best. Grew up all over Buffalo. For cost of housing, activities for kids, sense of family-community and traditions South Buffalo has all the elements of a well rounded upbringing giving your child a clear view of all aspects of city life. They will well educated in excellent private schools peppered with real life street smarts. They won't be naive and vulnerable when they begin college and get into trouble exploring the unknown dangers out in the real world. It's very important to be able to get glimpses of it in your growing years. Not a part of your life, but seen enough to know how important it is to avoid it. Just one of the myriad of excellent reasons I would love my kids to live in this completely overlooked area of Buffalo.

Her bubbly attitude isn't convincing the people who moved away either. This video is a fake as she is. Buffalo has been in a huge decline for over 30 years now and the winters absolutely suck along with the insanely high property taxes. The area lost 85% of its manufacturing jobs in the '90s causing a massive exodus of people to states that were growing. We lived there until we were in our early 40s, moved South and never looked back and when we go back for high school reunions, only a small group of people still live there.

sadly, the downtown is not very walkable. It's great for drivers, but if you want something more dense Buffalo is not it. It's a great car city.

I grew up in the City of Tonawanda which has lost 1/3 of its small population since the '70s and now has one elementary school for the whole city as opposed to the eight that it had when I was growing up there in the '60s and 70s. NAFTA killed 80% of the manufacturing jobs and most of the jobs were in manufacturing. Kids didn't ask you if your father worked in a factory, they asked you which factory your father worked at and the area has yet to recover. This clueless woman, used to New York City prices would be happy but no realist is going to pretend that brutal Buffalo winters, lack of job opportunities, crippling property taxes, crime and the rust belt feel of the whole area doesn't exist.
I wish the sabres would win the cup and the bills move to another city

I lived in Buffalo (born there) 9 years from 59-67 & fort erie 20! (Same weather, just across the river) I remember one summer it rained every weekend! July 1992 8.93 inches of rain.
I live in the Sonoran desert now and 'Wish' it would rain.....just a bit!
I remember in the 60's epic rain and thunder shaking the windows....that was cool.
I think if you live in western New York, southern Ontario, you appreciate the sunny days more than someone like me, who only sees clouds 19% of the time as apposed to 57%.
I do miss the spring when everything suddenly pops up!

Buffalo and WNY are anything but affordable. The property taxes on the house we sold when left there in '96 are now over $8,000 a year when the same thing down here in Clayton NC near Raleigh costs us about $1,800 a year and to act as if Buffalo winters aren't brutally cold, snowy and gray is not showing the whole picture. The expression there is that Buffalo has two seasons, winter and the 4th of July.

I spent part of a day in Buffalo earlier this week and I gotta say I was not at all impressed. Much of the city is really run down and just feels kinda like a city that hasn’t recovered from some kind of economic downturn. Can’t find an actual restaurant anywhere it seems like the whole damn city has nothing but bars and cafes. Even Allentown, which is Buffalo’s historic/hipster district was kinda ghetto. Plus I heard the winters are horrible.

I can understand you liking Buffalo if you're from Long Island. Long Island isn't even part of the United States. Its an island. You have to pay tolls to get to the United States from Long Island.

@@jeffgolden253 It’s similar to NJ or most places if we are looking at it from that lense. I’ve been to various states we had to pay tolls for pretty much every single one if we we’re coming from another state, in particular Jersey has an exorbitant quantity of tolls. But in general if you live on these islands you do not have to pay a toll to travel amongst them except Staten Island. NYC is still apart of the United States though much more so then common wealth like Puerto Rico respectfully to Puerto Rico which should be a state.
@@jeffgolden253 BTW us residents still have to pay the toll if we are coming back from another state to NYC I know it’s expensive and frustrating but no one can bypass the tolls. Staten Island has $20 toll for non residents so consider yourself lucky you don’t have to go to Staten Island they are the most notoriously expensive toll and Jersey is up there with the amount of tolls you have to pay It’s insane.
