    The term "IP" stands for Iron Pipe or IPS for Iron Pipe Size and is a standard sizing set in the 19th century. The lighting industry still uses these standard sizes for threaded pipe. Most common pipe sizes are 1/8IP (~3/8 inch), 1/4IP (~1/2 inch), 3/8IP (~5/8 inch), and 1/2IP (~3/4 inch). The Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standard 1598 requires a crossbar for luminaire to be at least .053 inches thick and made of steel.
