Everyone should watch the animated version of this called "flashpoint paradox". Its not as in depth as the comic books but its still one of the best DC animated movies ever.
Go all in to this story. I saw the animated version of this, but it wasn't as detailed as you or the comic seems to be. I love these alternate continuities that show weird versions of characters & events.
I personally think the greatest and strongest point of this story is how Thomas Wayne's willingness to do anything so that it was he and Martha that died in the ally way have Bruce survive. There's just something about that fatherly dedication and love for his son that is so awesome
I love seeing different takes on characters, and not necessarily dystopian versions either. What I love is the idea that with subtle changes, any character's fate could've been significantly different. Heroes could've been villains, villains could've been heroes, and either could've been just normal people. Flashpoint is the ultimate example of that.
Great Flash Point walk through. I'm with you on the "really really bad" part, it's the butterfly effect gone insane. And the way Martha & Thomas and Wonder Woman & Aquaman's stories are woven in made this one of my favorite series of all time.
I love Flashpoint and other dystopian storylines both in and out of comics because they answer the "what if" questions and also because it's so interesting to see such incredible characters in different environments. If we are all products of our respective environments then what happens to us when those environments change? It's so fun to see that question answered, and there so many possibilities. Each minor change can have a ripple effect on how characters develop and how the relationships between characters develop.

You know when a supervillian throws superman into a building that building is destroyed for the rest of the run. Having world altering events, and having the changes stick I think is so refreshing (think Fringe season 5)

In the Batman v Superman movie Bats decides that Superman is the biggest threat to everything. Little does he know that Barry Allen has responsible for the collapse of reality itself lols

It gives the writers freedom to do stuff they would never do in a normal book. Flashpoint in particular did it for me because of the way they reimagined the characters and their relationships.

As for as the dystopian setting goes; I love dystopian realities because it's a world were everything's flipped on it's ear, especially with characters in books or TV shows because we have an understanding of who they are and how they are...and the dystopian gives us a new take and feel on the environment and characters we know so well.
Flash Point was my reintroduction to the DC Universe after stepping away from DC for years because of the state of their universe pre and post Blackest Night. Look at how many of the DC characters were brought back to life in Blackest Night. Since I wasn't following DC, it was a surprising and freshing change when Flash Point #1 was released. Even better than Marvel's Age of Apocalypse.
What I like about stories such as this is their completeness. I like that they tell a tale that is all inclusive of both the best and worst of what people are capable of doing, whomever they are. Flashpoint in particular was well done because of how well it illustrated how one decision could have an effect that rippled throughout all time both forward and backward to change a realm of existence. With great power comes great responsibility, and all that good stuff. Ouchie. It looks like that really hurts at the end, there...
So far this series is a masterful take on one of my favorite DC events. The Flashpoint Universe is enjoyable to me BECAUSE it was temporary. I don't think I'd enjoy a permanent world that was so brutal and dark. And Flashpoint was enjoyable to me while I was reading it because it takes the form of a whodunit. The world's fucked up. There has to be a reason. How will Barry set things right? There are two aspects in particular I hope you cover: Gorilla Grodd! What he did with that kid was just... wow. And even though he doesn't play a big part in it, I love the fact that Booster Gold was caught in the middle of this and he was the only other person who was aware that things had changed. Booster's my favorite "B-List" hero, so to see him in that unique position in this Universe really drives Flashpoint home for me. More please! :D
I've been reading comics since I was 6 so to see a future/ a world where the heroes I grew up with break bad or live a different life from the canon run is always a treat for me. Basically taking the status quo and flipping it on its head. Thomas Wayne as Batman was by far one of the most inserting things I have read in any else world story (dealing with Batman) and wish they made it into an elseworld mini series or something.
Do the whole thing Rob, I'd love to hear you break down the full event including the Tie-in's for all the characters. Just like the Civil War videos a full break down would be awesome!

Man I so don't want to pick up comic collecting again, because I know I will have so much to catch up on. I last bought a comic in the mid 90's. Being that I am not the type of person to just start from now on, I will go back to then and buy them no matter the cost.
The reason why I like elsewhere stories is because they have no restrictions and no limit to its narrative. they can kill off any one they can do unthinkable and new things that would hinder the continuity of the main universe. so yeah NO STRINGS as Ultron would say.
Reverse flash was not trapped in the speed force. He was resurrected in blackest night, then went back in time to do the flash rebirth arch. After that he got locked in a super villain prison, so he could be freed in brightest day.

I agree but I hate to admit this but the animation was pretty bad. like for example superman in the first 10 minutes
The animation isn't bad, but some character proportions and designs are pretty funky
Their designs are a little wonky in the normal DC universe, they seemed to try and give them all pretty boy features.

dystopian worlds feel more real than utopian ones, or ones where the hero wins without a negative consequence.
