  • Part 2 of the tutorial on probably the most important fingerstyle song for all of us: this is the song that Tommy heard Chet Atkins play through a radio in 1967, and set him on a path towards an acoustic fingerstyle career.

However, I completed Blue Moon Tutorial #1...I’ve learned what to play but it’s another thing to make it sound fluid; playing what I’ve already learned (no matter how clumsy I may play it) helps me get a better attitude about learning the new bars I’m learning in order to complete a song. Hey great job putting together this tutorial. I myself spent a long time analysing Tommy's various performances of of this piece around a year and a half ago when learning this song. There are a few things that you got “wrong” (i.e. not exactly the way he plays it, at least in the performances I’ve seen) but overall a great overview of the song and a great resource for people looking to learn it.

    • @TimVanRoy
      @TimVanRoy  Před 3 lety

      Hi Julian! I have absolutely no problems with critisism as long as it is done politely (as is the case with your remark)! And I understand what you mean: I learned Windy & Warm from one of Tommy's earliest recordings (in the -gasp- pre CZcams days), and have always played it in the same manner. I should have checked more recent versions when making this tutorial, since you are not the first one to make this remark. But I think the lesson still holds up well for people taking their first steps in this song!

    Tim, hi...I did some agent work for Stephen Bennett, Muriel Anderson and a few shows for Richard Smith, so I have been around a lot of great guitarists. I have been playing for a long time and I learned this song when I was about 18, HOWEVER I learned a few moves watching your lesson, so thanks very much. Everyone plays this tune differently it seems, especially Tommy. You never know what that guy's going to do. I only met Tommy once, but I watch him a lot, especially if I want to feel like crap and feel like using my guitars for wood for the fireplace, lol. Thanks again, you are an excellent player.

      @TimVanRoy  Před rokem +1

      Thanks Perry! I'm realistic and realize I will never be at Tommy's (or Stephen, Muriel or Richard's) level, for that to be the case you have to be able to devote your life full-time to playing and that is not something that I see happening for myself. But I'm very happy to be able to recreate these pieces and shed some light on them for other people!

      @@TimVanRoy Don't sell yourself short Tim, because you are exceptionally talented. You have to be to play these tunes with such precision, but I agree that people like Tommy, Richard, Stephen, Muriel, pretty much live and breathe the guitar. Tim, how long did it take for the thumb pick to become second nature, for you? :)

    • @TimVanRoy
      @TimVanRoy  Před 3 lety +2

      I don't really remember, this was quite a few years ago. I started playing with a thumbpick from scratch and after 3 years I played my first solo acoustic gig... I think it started to click after a month or 3, and it really became something I could do without thinking after a month or 6. But I still play mistakes all the time 😅

    What is the timeline for the next tutorials?

    • @TimVanRoy
      @TimVanRoy  Před 3 lety +3

      The next in line are (always a teaser one week, the tutorial the next): Those Who Wait, Stay Close To Me and Mombasa. After that I'll be tackling the list I pulled from the CZcams poll, which I'll be sharing in a community post later this week!

      @@TimVanRoy so cool I look forward to every video. Will you first do the patreon top five or the ones from the youtube poll? Or a mix?

      @@philhellmuth2771 I forgot one song: Countrywide (that is actually the next one).
      I'll do the top five from the Patreon list first, but those are actually seven songs (fifth place was a draw between three songs). But there a lot of similarities between both lists, so a number of songs of the CZcams poll are the same.
      I compiled a top 10 and I must say it looks very diverse, both in styles of music and in terms of difficulty!

    I'm really struggling with that pinky slide.

    • @TimVanRoy
      @TimVanRoy  Před 2 lety +2

      Stick with it Mantorok! Make sure you don't press down too hard on the pinky while trying to perform that slide. If you apply too much pressure it will be very hard to slide up or down (with any finger, but especially with the pinky)!

      @@TimVanRoy It feels like I can't move the pinky without moving the rest of my hand, it's like it's locked in place.

      @@Mantorok That does sound as if you are applying WAY too much physical strength then! Make sure your guitar is set up properly (make sure the action is low and the guitar is comfortable to play). Otherwise you are going to struggle a lot in this style of playing!
