Windy & Warm (Tommy Emmanuel) - Tutorial (Part 1)

- Probably the most important fingerstyle song for all of us: this is the song that Tommy heard Chet Atkins play through a radio in 1967, and set him on a path towards an acoustic fingerstyle career.

I told myself, all I ever wanted was to learn Chet Atkins Windy & Warm song and I can die happy. You sir, have given me that. I cant thank you enough.
Don't die too soon Muharrem 🤣 I've got a few other Chet Atkins tunes coming up, so you would be missing out!
Thank you so much for breaking this down into pieces to be learned. At age 78 I am still trying to get finger picking down. Great Job on your instruction and teaching.
Thanks Gene. It's never too late to learn, is it? I have several retired guitar students in my local academy group, they are probably the most motivated students of them all!
god bless you dude! btw, did you nail it eventually?
And this is how you make THE guitar tutorial.
AT LAST someone does a spot on tutorial of W&W. Thank you very much, awsome, subscribed!
Awesome lesson, I'm an old geezer with a Gibson, I can really get my fingers around this lovely tune, many thanks.
Finally someone around who teaches fingerstyle guitar in a nice and quiet way. I have been looking for a good method for years and I have found it now. Thank you, I will follow you. Sjef Wagemakers - the Netherlands.
Bedankt Sjef! Komende week komen de vorige videos ook allemaal terug (ik had een reeks van meer dan 30 nummers, maar door copyrightproblemen moest ik het format van de videos bijsturen).
I got through a Tommy Emmanuel song succesfully, I never would have imagined it 4 months ago when I started playing
There must be something wrong with the youtube algorithm - I never stumbled upon your channel, only today it showed up in my home.
Great content here, wow. I'll definitely check out the patreon, such high quality stuff needs support. Thanks for the great work!
Jesus rhythm and melody is a god damn huge step up from little chords and pentatonic. I'm having some trouble here but here we go
Don't give up Julio! If this one is giving you a headache then first check out my basic version of Freight Train (in the "starting out" playlist) and then switch to "Chaplin In New Shoes" when it gets posted next week. That will prepare you properly to tackle this song!
@@TimVanRoy wow, thanks for replying! It's hard, but giving up is the last thing I'll do. You're a great teacher, with enough practice, I'm slowly getting there.
I'm definitely checking the videos out too, thank you.
I can't believe this doesn't have more views. Absolutely sublime. Thanks!
Thanks Tobias! The views will probably build up some more soon: this is one of my more recent videos, but it has become one of the most popular ones quite soon. I hope you got everything you needed out of the video!
Im sorry, but most of the people does not understand the quality of this channel. This the best channel on youtube! Best content, best teacher.
Thank you Tim.
I'm so happy you did this tutorial! Thank you! It's a great help with this great timeless piece.
I'm happy to help, Emmanuel! Enjoy playing through the song!
Thank you Tim, I will start leaning this on Monday
This channel is a blessing!!! Wish I found it earlier, can’t wait for el vaquero! Greetings from Bristol, England
Woops, somehow this comment slipped past me! Much appreciated Brandon!
It’s so hard to get used to the alternating bassline while playing melody. It’s a joke how difficult I find this after decades of playing guitar. Hats off to anyone who has mastered this.
I had almost graduated as a professional freelance guitar player when I started this style, and I had pretty much the same feeling. So no worries, it is completely normal 😅
I managed to get it down after JUST playing the alternating bassline while watching netflix or something for like 6 months lol once you remove having to think about the thumb it helps...I'm still not great. but definitely helped
The best guitar tutorial channel on CZcams
Now let's hope the subs and views build as a result! Thanks again Jonas!
nice instructional video ..
the great doc watson was the first artist i heard perform this song many years ago ,
probably just after chet got a hold of it ..
Songs like Windy and Warm have always made me feel like my brain is going to explode. I haven’t mastered it yet, but the breakdown of the song in your tutorial has made it achievable now. Thank you!
Great to hear Thomas! If this feels like it is still too demanding for your current abilities, then check out my basic version of Freight Train, Chaplin In New Shoes or Baby's Coming Home (both by Chet). All those lessons are on my channel as well. "Wheels" is coming soon, and might be the easiest one of all.
And once again a huge "Thank You" Tim. Once more i may get a new song by Tommy done. Awesome tutorial!
Much appreciated! Enjoy the lesson!
There is so much gold instruction in your "asides" about how to practice and how to approach a difficult piece, bit by bit, add a note at a time, keep it slow, and so on. Great stuff! And great advice on how to cheat the pinkie bend.
Great to hear! Going slow and one step at a time is the only way forward in this highly technical style of playing! Enjoy the tune!
fantastic tutorial! perfect pace and explanations. i learned this years ago but have forgotten how to play it, this will go back on my list.
Für mich bist du einer der größten und besten Lehrer hier. Tolle Arbeit...vielen Dank. Auch für deine Version von "Wicked Game". Danke, vielen Dank 👍🏼For me you are one of the greatest and best teachers here. Great work...thank you. Also for your version of "Wicked Game". thank you, thank you
Danke schön, Paul! Very kind of you!
Thanks for these lessons. They are outstanding and have made some of this music accessible. You are an impressive guitarist!
My pleasure Sean! Lots more is ready to be released on this channel, keep checking back!
Thank you so much for doing these tutorials, i absolutely love tommy emmanuel and hope to get somewhere near his level in the future. I hope more people see these because you deserve more views!
You're very welcome! Subs and views have been building slowly, and I'm quite enjoying the slow buildup as it gives me time to cope with the messages and reply to everyone!
This is what an awesome tutorial is all about 🙏🏽👍
The thumb over is a good thing to learn, it puts far less strain on your wrist
Oh Tim that’s a great tutorial I’m working on this for months man and I finally have the whole part 1 nailed !! Part 2 here we come !! Thank you so much for your clear and concise videos they are really appreciated I can’t thank u enough I’m so excited take care from Ireland 🇮🇪 Brian 👍👍🎸🎸🎸
Hi there, that is so great to hear! Congrats on nailing the first part, good luck with part 2! Thank you for the encouragement, such a motivation to keep going! I'm planning to launch my own website soon, so stay tuned. Happy holidays in Ireland!
Hi Tim, I started fingerstyle about a year and a half ago. I have strummed chords, slid a lick or two in from time to time, and all that since I was about 8 years old. I never took lessons or learned how to read music, so my skillset was very minimal, but just loved the guitar. I'm 62 now. As I stated above, a year and a half ago I decided it was crazy to close my years out without doing something I loved to do and doing it well. The first person I listened to on youtube said, it can be done, so I believed them and went for it (as anyone trying knows, it seems almost impossible to do at first). I now know part one of Windy and Warm thanks to your efforts here. I am very grateful to folks like you who invest the time that you do to help others who love the guitar. Howdy from the great state of Texas and please sir, keep up the great work that you do. You, and others like you, are very much appreciated my friend.
Like Tommy says: It's Never Too Late, Randy! Such an awesome story! I have several retired students, and once they get into it they can be the most tenacious practice freaks on the planet. I'm happy to be part of the journey!
@@TimVanRoy Appreciate the encouragement. I'll likely work for a living till I drop, so retirement is a ways out I think :). I love what I do for a living too much to actually quit. That said, I think I've come to one conclusion about fingerstyle, or really any instrument you choose; The amount of time you're willing to invest and the amount of challenge you're willing to take on, means the difference between being ok, descent, good or great. You've said it yourself, you just can't get around investing the time. I'm a subscriber now, primarily due to your attitude and your teaching ability. If you ever get to east Texas, you're always welcome at our fire sir.
@@randysrhythm If it ever comes to that I'll happily take you up on your invitation!
What a find for guitarist. Tim does a brilliant job laying this tune out. Fantastic ! Thank you Tim....Tucson, Arizona
Thank you, much appreciated! More songs and tutorials on Patreon if you're interested.
Amazing, one of the best tutorials I have ever seen. Thank you very much, Tim. I gotta check out more of your stuff 😀
You're welcome Kasper! And welcome to the Patreon club!
You the man, Tim.
Dude you’re awesome! Great breakdown! thanks and keep em coming
Thank you for an excellent job of breaking this song down.
I have been wanting to learn this song ever since I heard my uncle play it in my grandparents shed about 15 years ago. Tried to learn it on my own last year when the pandemic started, but gave up after a few hours. Coming across your tutorial, I am about 10 minutes in, but am going to finally learn this whole song from start to finish and will update when this is completed. Thank you VERY much for all the detail in this. This made my night to discover this video. You rock!
Hi Devan! Great to hear! Feel free to tag me (here or on Instagram) if you ever feel confident enough to post a version of the song. I'll be happy to listen and comment!
@@TimVanRoy Thanks Tim! If I can build up the courage to video it I will definitely do so. Just as an update, currently trying to land the pattern down in Verse 1. My fingers are clearly not as callused as they used to be so its hard to practice this for longer than 25 minutes, but man this pattern is tricky to land. First time I've ever used a thumb pick as well. It'll come though. :)
@@DevanTheMan If you have trouble getting a thumbpick to work, then maybe check out the first two videos on my thumbpick starter course. I cover most of the common beginner mistakes there!
Did you get it down, Devan?
@Kind_Of_Blue after lots of breaks from playing over the last two years, as much of a struggle it was at first, I am currently at bridge 1! Haven't played guitar in a few months now but every time I pick it up, it's the first song I play! Are you in the process of learning it too?!
Hurray, I have something to do this weekend. Thanks, Tim!
You're welcome! Have fun!
@@TimVanRoy, I have half-assed this song for years. It will be a pleasure to finally learn it the right way, if I can break all of my bad habits. Thanks again.
@@kdtall8912 You have my sympathy 🤣 You wouldn't believe how many things I have to relearn for these tutorials. I learned most of these songs in the pre-CZcams era, so I couldn't check Tommy's fingerings. Now that I can, I often find I play large sections of songs differently from what he does!
Tim Van Roy I know that feeling man, there is so many variations of this song, it’s great to improvise
In good style ! Love it
what a GREAT Teacher , thank you
Thank you Tim for another great lesson :)!
wow this is the most useful guitar tutorial i have ever seen

Fantastic work man. Great video. Subscribed
You are a really good teacher Tim! I'm a huge fan of Tommy and I've been playing "self- taught" guitar (nowadays it's easier) for 2 years. I managed to learn the main parts of Drivetime and Fuel thanks to you!
You deserve 1'000'000 subs or more.
Thanks Gemal! Self-thaught and still going straight for the two most difficult songs! You don't hold back ;-)
That was tops. Well explained, paced perfectly, easily understood. Great job, thank you.
You are more than welcome! Enjoy playing through the (first part of the) tune!
This is pretty clearly, to me anyway, the best tutorial on this song available. I've looked at many. Thanks, will subscribe.
Most appreciated comment, George! I’m flattered!
Great lesson, Thank you
Tim thanks a lot 😘 finally you completed my wish as if you noticed I was asking for this lesson from the last 3 months ! now I will be able to play this !
Have fun with the video! It's a great song to play!

Fantastic lesson!!! Thank you/bedankt!
No thanks Matt! I hope you have fun with the tune!
breakdown into layers then add it up. great way to comprehend!
I'll probably be sticking to that approach more often. I do think it really works to know what the basic frame of the song is, before adding all the little tricks in!
I think its fair to call it tommys version. You mentioned J .D and thats only respect....i hope i can get this under my fingers ive tried once before and lost hope.....thanks and here i go.
HOW HAVE I NEVER SEEN THIS CHANNEL BEFORE?
Thank you so very much, sincerely. This is probably the best taught tutorial I've ever seen. Your explanation, technique, careful demonstration, AND tab...this is so very good. May I say thank you a million times?
I had to stop the lesson to subscribe. This will take months to learn, but I am determined.
From one Dutch brother to another, have I said "thank you," yet?
Unspeakably happy to have discovered you.
Thanks Jeffrey (we will stick to English here)! Much appreciated. The channel is quite new but I'm hoping more and more people will find their way here. I'm really glad to hear the explanation in the video is clear enough to make you want to give this song a try.
Just one thing... I'm from Belgium 😎 CZcams keeps changing my country status, and I don't know why. But I have worked in the Netherlands for years! I know the country and its people well, and I absolutely love it!
Thanks for this , I'm determined to nail it 😀👍
That's the spirit, Karl! Take as much time as you need, there is no rush!
@@TimVanRoy thanks Tim , still struggling with independence but I'll get there 😉 thanks again 👍
To make bending on the B string easier, I simply took a high E string as the B string and of course tuned it to B. Bending is a little easier that way. At least at the beginning. I'll change that again later.
Man thank you so much for that great tutorial! The first one on that song that got me at least somewhat close to understanding it :D hopefully in 2-3 month I am gonna be able to play it decently enough to recognize it ;)
Let's do it, mate!)
Good on you Kubi! Hang in there, all will come together with time and practice. I've done quite a few hard songs lately, but there are some easier tunes on it's way! Once you get this down you'll have something else to start work on.
@@TimVanRoy of course (almost) always the harder songs are the ones that sound so amazing and that I want to play . So I just have to put the work in. I am super hyped to be able to play verse and first brigde although I am playing guitar for not even half a year. All thanks to your hard work that went into the tutorial
Just discoverd Tim recently.
Yet again a Superb tutorial from a very gifted guitar player!
A small tip that helped me; if you struggle with the upward-bend with the pinky (as i do) try a downward-bend (pull the string down instead of pushing it up). For me that solved my problem with the upward-bend. Maybe not the same but it sounds ok.
That's a good addition Anton! Pulling down on the string will work as long as the bend is not too wide (like the half step in this case). As soon as you have to go for a full step you will probably pull the string off the fretboard before you reach the right pitch!
great lesson... explanations - tempo - build advice one step at a time - nice teaching manner .. all good ... easiest way to learn .. this Travis style takes a lot of practice ... as you say... ONE note added at time.. give you 100% for perfect formatting (all I gotta do is learn - won't take too long cos I can play ok now) thanks
Great to hear Roger! And yes, when starting out, just add one note at a time. It really works 🤓
@@TimVanRoy hey Tim... it is possible to do a tutorial on ONE MINT JULEP ... I've spent so many hours trying to work it out... but several sections are beyond me.
the piece is a recording in about 2017 or 2018 at his home ... there are 2 songs ... I'm only interested in ONE MINT JULEP .. (not Muskrat Ramble) .. man you'd be my saviour if you could do that.. this version is probably his most basic... thanks TIM
Excellent tutorial...I have a lot of trouble with the independent thumb picking & the off beat notes....you have helped me immensely
I'm glad I could help! Some of these technical bits just take someone lifting the veil and showing how it works. Have fun playing through the tune!
I'm using your tutorial for my upcoming music school auditions. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! Best of luck with the school auditions!
@@TimVanRoy I really appreciate that! I'll drop another post here when I find out the results.
@@TimVanRoy I got in!!! Thank you so much for this tutorial, it made such a huge difference. I'd love to send another donation but don't want it showing up in the comments section. Is there a way to do that? The link in the video description didn't work on my end, so if you have another option, please let me know! Thanks again!!!
@@thealchemyofsong8632 Well, you will very soon have to option of joining my website! I do appreciate the donations, but I like it even more when people get something in return! @@TimVanRoy 🤣🤣🤣 I will!
You have been a great teacher man...loved you tutorials...wanted to request you to do How Deep is Your Love...please please if you can please make a tutorial on this song
Definitely on the schedule! I'm making a list for songs in a duet form, and a lot of the TE/Knowles tunes are absolutely amazing.
Thank you!
Hi, Tim! There’s another iconic song of Chat and Tommy - Borsalino. I hope one day you will transcribe it. Many thanks for Windy&Warm!
Borsalino will be done for sure in the future! As soon as I get a few TE-videos ready I'll have some breathing room in the schedule and start addressing other artists as well.
I really like how profesionnel and efficient your tutorials are. I never felt lost. Great works. Could I suggest some minors "improvements" for your next tutorial? There are in no way critisism since your works is wonderful, but maybe playing the entire song in the intro could be a good way to "sell" the tutorial (with or wihtout the tab). Thanks and continue the good works!
Hi Luc-Frédéric! Thanks for the feedback! I already tried a lot of things to improve the video, and playing through (a section of) the song was one of those things. Unfortunately this immediately triggers the CZcams copyright system and the whole video is viewed as a "cover" which immediately impacts the revenue a video can generate. So I dropped it again after a few tries...
@@TimVanRoy Damn youtube can't recorgnize a cover and a teachning lesson. Thanks for the explanation, continue the good works!
Great video Tim please can you Tommy's guitar boogie thanks
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I really appreciate your videos and they are helping me to learn this style. Just subscribed! Is there a chance you might do a tutorial for I'll See You in My Dreams one day? I'm sure you get a lot of requests but I figure it's okay to ask. Cheers and thank you for the content!
I'm starting a whole series on Chet's music soon (the first lessons have already been finished) and I'll See You In My Dreams will definitely pop up in there as well!
@@TimVanRoy that's wonderful to hear! Thank you for replying to my comment!
