To celebrate the release of the Collector's Edition of the Butterfly Lion, watch Michael reading an extract and talking about the inspiration behind the book. The Butterfly Lion grew from several magical roots: the memories of a small boy who tried to run away from school a long time ago; a book about a pride of white lions discovered by Chris McBride; a chance meeting in a lift with Virginia McKenna, actress and champion of lions and all creatures born free; a true story of a soldier of the First World War who rescued some circus animals in France from certain death; and the sighting from a train of a white horse carved out on a chalky hillside near Westbury in Wiltshire.

I love Michael Morpurgo! In year 3, I read this book & I was so hooked! In year 4, I started reading more and more books from you & I have loved all of them! I'm in year 6 now and I still read your books and I love them so much! I recently just read Cool, The Elephant in The Garden & The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips! You have been my favourite author for years & I love your books so much! You're so creative & the stories you write are absolutely wonderful & heart warming!
Well I don’t like him! 1 Wednesday on September, it was me and my classes first time of reading it and it sucks. I think u should take a look at the rant I made on that and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse!
I luv Michael I met him today
@Alex hanley, it’s fine to have your own opinion but keep it to yourself if it’s negative, Michael Morpurgo put a lot of work into this book and if you don’t like it fine but at least explain yourself for why you don’t like it. Just think how you would feel if someone told you “I think this thing you made is boring” Another thing, fine, you may dislike a book but just because somebody wrote that book you hate, well fine. I hate you for making trashy videos.
What an amazing storyteller. Such an interesting story too. I bet the children adored him as a teacher, especially with all the stories he made up. It's lovely to hear of a very successful writer who is not to proud to admit he is not the best speller. Bravo. What a HERO!
Mr Murpurgo,I could have listened to you until the end.I am definitely getting the book, like you ,I too remember chilblains and semolina pudding.I am 70yrs old,but there is something about this book which compels me to get it,I can't wait to see what it is.
I READ IT AND I STILLHAVE IT
Oh my gosh, you have me hooked and I'm just the mom! Have been looking for cd stories for my daughter to listen to at night. She already has a lot of your books and now will purchase some of them on cd for her to listen to. Really excited, Thankyou

Why he called this book The butterfly lion
THIS COMMENT IS WAY 2 LONG.I heard the author actually didn't want to be an author. He was a teacher, his students where bored and not interested in the stores he read. so he made the story the butterfly lion. His student adored the story and said" and what happened next?" he said " I still need to finish the next chapter.
i have a lot of books

Michael Morpurgo! I am very disappointed with u! I mean look at how bad the pictures were in the failure book,
I don't like it
This is a terrible way to start a book. We are made to believe we will be following the story of a boy running away from school. But the actual story has nothing to do with that. Morpurgo choose to waste the reader’s time with that. When the story proper starts in Africa, the emotional investment of the reader is reset. The boy ended up going back to school, so that part of the story was pointless.
