It's the alpacalypse! I decided to add alpacas to start heading in the right direction content-wise, and then I got hunting up and running again. While working on this, I sent Moku off on a mission to fetch pine cones, and hit few problems.

About eating meat: perhaps have the bone left over afterwards, which could be used for making some tools? Bone was IRL used for a variety of tools, like hair combs, sewing needles (pre-metalworking) and tools for processing animal skin into leather.
Don't forget that bones can be used for weapons(like bone tipped arrows, harpoons and spears) and they can be made into a broth also.
and for creating structures like a hut that is made of fur and bone for the winter
Plus one could always use a big ol’bone
cool idea!
Yeah, make sense. Also don't forget sinew: Stone Age version of duct tape.
With the aesthetic of Sapiens being how it is, seeing horse nomads on these grasslands will be magnificent.
Great work man!
@@FilipMolin chickens weren't present until 10,000 years ago, so I don't think he particularly cares for being accurate much lol
@@FilipMolin The planet is not Earth so I guess a little bit of timeline difference is allowed. As long as there are no people riding on T-Rexes, I'm ok.
Filip Molin not sure if it’s supposed to have a set timeline, because your supposed to go up through the ages, I’m assuming it will have tons of animals from different periods that will be too hard to hunt early on & you’ll have to go up ages for better tools.
Daniel K are you telling me you don’t want Aztecs riding on dinosaurs?
Hey Dave. I noticed you haven’t posted in a while. I hope you are doing okay
Been following for a while, all very nice work. Love the world. Just one comment on converting mammoths to alpacas, elephants (and mammoths) are the only 4 legged animals with knees on their rear legs, forward facing joints. Horse, cows, alpacas etc all have rear facing joints, so your alpaca probably should have its rear leg skeleton adjusted :). Just a useless piece of trivia.
I really like the idea that the player can't just roam around anywhere but I feel like once a Sapien has explored an area that the player should be allowed to freely explore that area with or without the presence of a Sapien. Similar to how a lot of games have grayed out maps until you physically search there and then the map is permanently uncovered.
Just a thought, game looks amazing as ever!
This devlog series is the reason I still use youtube. Honestly can't wait to play.
Would be nice to actually see the tiles that are queue'd up for building (give them a slight tint or something), because the little icons that hover over the tiles are confusing.
The game looks incredible, I am speechless.
Meat decay would be great, too. Having to use preserving techniques such as smoking or drying (jerky). Eating decaying meat would lead to sickness.
Man your list of ideal features must be quite extensive. This is your baby, so you probably have so much more in your mind. How do you keep yourself to a strict plan/set of features? That'd probably kill me as an indy dev lol.
I'm wondering; will there be dangers to the sapiens? I'm thinking starvation, rivaling 'clans' fighting you, aggressive animals or anything similar?
The game looks *amazing* so far, but I haven't followed closely until recently, so maybe this was already discussed. I'm just worried playing a game without any "danger" could turn quite bland in the long run?*
* however The Sims series managed to do quite well so what do I know. lol
There will be a lot more of a challenge, yep! I can't really promise anything in particular, but there are a number of things on the todo list around this. It will be a focus more in a couple of months when a few more of these core mechanics are better locked in.
neanditals?
As for the viewing distance/not bring able to fly too far away. An idea might be to have the sapians have a set range which acts like a paint brush meaning you can go anywhere they have been before. So you would still need to explore. But you could look around those places without sending the back
Sorta like a fog of war
@@TobbyTukaywan exactly
I agree. I like this idea
Hi Dave, I hope you're doing ok amidst all the craziness going on nowadays. Have you been able to make some progress on the game in the past few weeks?
18:15 interesting pile name haha
Amazing as always, super cool looking, the attention to details is amazing with good UI decisions.
Will tune in every episode of the devlog!
Lol
“Daves pile o s@#t”
A sort of “fog of war” system could work for the camera issue when the tribe is separated over long distances.
I really love these devlogs!
Seeing a game evolve from start to finish without any premade engine is just amazing! I use Unity but I really appreciate those who program their own engines from the ground up.
I always thought that the generated world in Sapiens is way too big for the actual setting that you play in. But it's just as in real life: We are small creatures living on a vast and beautiful planet in an even more vast galaxy. Love that profundity.
Your level of dedication is really impressive and inspiring. Amazing work
I hope that you are going well and that we will see us soon !
We're either waiting for a huge update or some unfortunate news, I'm hoping for the former
I love how this is progressing! I think a neat edition to this game would be huge mountainscapes that you could explore. They could be more dangerous than normal terrain and I think they would look stunning in the distance
I really connect on an emotional level with the pile of dead alpacas
I have been silently following this game for a while, but I must come out of the dark and say, this game is absolutely gorgeous, vibrant, and lively!!! I really can't wait till when I can play your game!
A possible solution to stop the user from exploring with the camera would be to draw an invisible line behind the walking path of the sapiens in your tribe, and have it place a series of points every __ meters. Then have a set radius to explore around each of those points.
To solve the issue of too many points being counted, set it so that points will only be tracked/placed when a certain distance away from another point.
Addition to this idea: and delete inner points that dont add any space to move because other points cover its radius entirely
you could set this up as a pseudo fog of war where places your sapien has travelled unlocks that area, or building structures enables paths between each structure
Love the shift click zoom effect. Very cool
Also keep in mind that early humans were primarily runners, and that's how they survived and acquired their food.
Honestly I love the gigantic grassy plain as it is, it reminds of the Great Plains in America where it was just a desert of grass
for the map problem could you zoom the camera away and while zooming away bring the camera down and then in. I think it would be cool if the mammoths only lived in cold regions and if you wanted to go to cold regions you would have to get clothing from alpaca wool (you could also use the mammoth tusks for upgraded spears and arrows). 8:22 a dragging animation would make more sense. 10:22 a caravan system would be nice (like in rimworld)
Hi Dave no feedback just wanted to say big fan keep up the work man super hyped for the game
I think a great idea would be dynamic paths, like as sapiens walk the same ways across the world they will make the ground into dirt paths with their feet.
It would be cool to have various levels of advanced handcart, from handcarts to alpaca-powered carriages!
I honestly can't wait for this to be out! This type of videos inspire me to make my own game, and I always wanted to make something similar to Banished/Stardew Valley/Pharaoh but I just never seem to get a good idea.
Very fun to see the game evolve! Nicely done!
Dave please don't worry about them being too long! I often think they're too short
Actually, they weren't probably killing the animal to get the wool after domestication, they would have used combs and knives. Felt probably predated weaving and is considered probably the oldest form of textile, needles were an early invention Flax was also an early thread, rope and cloth, also bark lashings for tying things together before you had something to kill to get hide and gut for such. Great looking game.
The terrain is looking so good now
Great job it's coming along nicely. One thing I think would be a good idea especially in early stages. Is a primitive sled to transport faster and more stuff you gather, like in "Empire earth. You could craft them from sticks and drag it along. Apart from that great job :)
The grassy plains is my favorite biome
I may be wrong but I thought the usual way to catch a chicken is to run after it and grab it with your hands.
When you go to the world map you should be able to see other tribes too. Also, a return to the home tribe button will be nice since sometimes you lost where you are and can't find it on the map.
You should add a 'fog of war' of sorts, where a fog plane is created from underneath a group of tribes people, so the further away you are, the 'higher' the fog is, and anything underneath that fog can't be clicked on, that way mountains and such might still be visible, but anything on the ground is obscured
This is coming along so well, such a beautiful game with so much potential. Keep up the hard work
Just an idea, but I think it might be convenient to have a parental-skill-transferance system (parents teach their skills to their kids). This ensures a constant "supply" of capable workers, especially once the skills get more advanced.
For example if you leveled up a sapien to have construction-skill level 10 to build townhalls or something and then they die and you have to level up someone else from the ground.
Plus its how this was actually done by humans up until a couple of decades ago, at least in a lot of common trades.
Great video, really looking forward to playing the game.
It would probably be useful to add some kind of inventory system for the sapiens, such as a satchel or a strap to hold tools with, so they don't have to keep walking back and forth to carry items. I noticed this when the sapien killed the alpaca and had to leave the spear on the ground to carry the carcass.
i hope in the future all living organisms do and need to do what all real organisms do and need to do, and overall all things happen and need to happen like they do in real life
I’d love to see communal cooking. Have them put a rack of alpaca ribs on the fire and feed everyone. Maybe pots of stew later.
These videos are a blast to watch! Currently having 3D programming as a course at school and this is so inspiring
I am soooo excited for this game! You're a great game developer and I really love your approach to this game and to what your plan with it is. I'm so happy there are still good game devs in the world :D
I think a really nice dynamic with the giant meat would be, when a Sapien cooks one of those big haunches or ribs, to invite the other tribe members over for a meal. That would obviously interact with their social relatinoship scores in nice ways too. Meal sharing is such an essential part of human interaction and socialization, it's a bit sad and lonely to see the Sapiens eating all by themselves...
This game is so cool! Keep up the good work!
Nice work so far! I can't wait to work on some mods for this.
This is great. Please keep us updated. I’m about to start a city management game myself (with a custom engine too :) )
Bears, wolfs and denser or more forests and bushes pls
AmAzing work keep it up 👍
The mammoth looks great
I really love this game already
For the whole zooming across the map, perhaps you can use a kind of "Fog of war" type system. Where, the further out of range you get from your people, the less detailed it gets. A crude way to do this, would be to focus mip-mapping on your Sapiens as well as on yourself in a subtractive sense. So if something is far away from a Sapien, it becomes a lower quality, and if it's far away from you, it becomes a lower quality (For performance reasons =P). This way, you can't go to places and inspect details your people wouldn't be able to see, but you still preserve the ability to move around and between camps and sapiens freely.
I think some sort of waypoint system could be really cool for travelling between groups of sapiens. Possibly in the map view, you could set waypoints (if they are near sapiens, or something like that), that you could then name and travel between. Just a thought I had.
another amazing devlog!
In terms of exploration, it would make sense if these hunter gatherer tribes migrated to follow animals. Maybe the alpacas could have their own randomly generated migration patterns, or maybe their migration patterns could reflect seasonal changes
For the zoom you can just use quaternions, in opengl Ijust use glm and they are the only way to animate rotations properly.
long time no see
Stone knives could also be used to shear wool, just as an idea- if you care. it's what early people would have used for animals to keep from killing them, as they would have understood that it's better to keep the animal alive and get lots of wool, than kill it and only get a little :P - again, just my 2 cents, if you care :) It's great work you've done so far, I'm always excited to see your new devlog stuff, keep on keeping on :)
Maybe a kenshi style of this where you can click on peoples profile pics/ partys at the bottom and zoom between them.
This game already looks amazing, if I feel like I could buy it now & be satisfied I can’t waito see what your gonna do with it! Although I learned a new bit of advice I’d like to share with you, simplicity is key, if you make it too complicated or with too many features people will lose interest even if they don’t think they would.
I can't wait for this game
you should add a popup if a sapian goes to collect a resource outside the set range of the storage otherwise people will forget to change it and they will send one off and wonder why nothing came back 30 minutes later
I love your work please be safe. I would love to play your game when it's complete. I am an anthropologist and paleontologist and I love it
It’d be really cool if in the grassy plains biome the trees only spawned if they were in a place sheltered from the wind like in real life, for instance when the ground forms a small ravine
When it comes to animals, I think it would be cool to add aggressive animals like the saber tooth. Big cats will generally avoid you if you keep your eye on them, so it would be cool if they only approached your tribe members if their backs are turned. It would also make sense if they attacked when provoked.
Maybe you can divide them into different types: like mothers and cubs. If you come near a mother's cub, it can be a way to provoke them. That or throwing something at it.
A saber tooth Tiger's tooth can be used as a rare type of spear in itself. Maybe it can be an incredibly value commodity with better stats than a regular stone tip.
If you add bartering in the game, it would be cool to trade resources like that with other tribes.
I know that's a lot, but I thought I would share a few ideas
I'd say to embrace the camera flip (talked about at the beginning of the devlog) and just have it slow down if the camera reaches a certain angle of rotation in a set amount of time!
I absolutely in love with those alpacas
Just an idea it would be cool to be able to construct spiritual alters and cultures which might be able to do stuff with rituals - this could add to the early human vibe
Love ya work mate love also neolitic love both ya guys work
I love what you're doing! Liked and commented for the algorithm :)
I think Sapien is a great idea, but with that awesome terrain generation and dynamic LOD, I would prefer to just play this as a first-person or third-person survival game. The terrain generation is so nice just to marvel over
Amazing, even though its so much work you stil manage to progress so much
Hi Dave, have you thought about adding chicken pens/huts? This could be it's own skill, the eggs give the sapiens a renewable food source. And when you add predators, they will have to fend them off the tribe chickens :)
More distance blur when closer to the ground would really look good
Looks great!
Can't wait for the dinosaur mods
the alpaca butchring remind the old mortal kombat fatality when the fighter blow the his enemy and fly 4 legs 6 arms and 3 heads
YAY! NEW DEVLOG!!!
Could you make the view radius larger? If you do that then trees will make a bigger impact on both how the world looks and exploration. It seems like if you start in the plains you’d have a hard time getting wood if you can’t see it. Also aliens.
I can’t wait to play! I am so excited
Hi Dave, have you thought about implementing hotkeys? I know it‘s rather something for later stages in development, but it just came to mind when you were trying to switch between sapiens. I think it would be cool if one could assign them to the numbers 1-9, where pressing once would select a sapien and double pressing would switch the camera.
Enceladus numbers are actually changing the speed
That would be good for early game, but I think the goal is to have much larger settlements of sapiens towards end game
Crestfallen.png Ah I see, that makes sense. Thanks. =)
Chickens love bugs!
And they really are bush birds, they prefer to hide under things and roost on low branches.
Then you've got their nest behavior and the roosters food finding behavior, the crowing, taking care of little baby chicks.... all im saying is i wish someone would make a really complicated chicken game...
Throwing rocks at chickens simulator :)
I think adding horses to ride might be cool
for zooming in, probably just check the first "pole" - north / south / west / east ?
Nobody:
This guy: I bestow upon you......ALPACA
Add a method of, when the animal is larger and heavier, the people walk slower, so it''s like they're encumbered when carrying them, also energy usage by being encumbered, maybe a system that increases their strength over time when being encumbered like in the game kenshi
Wild Alpacas usually run the fuck away when they see humans. These must be domesticated ones.
I like how it kinda looks like Runescape
I think it would be interesting to implement a path that would wear down if sapiens walked there frequently. Like in Foundation
When are you adding boats.
Now I just wanna set up a civilisation in the mountains and build giant temples
It would be interesting to split the tribe to hunters/gatherers, like a hierarchy system where some are more respected than others. The game looks amazing nonetheless!
Hunting and gathering were not class separations in hunter/gatherer societies. Hunters *were* gatherers, as they would collect all kinds of food while pursuing animals. Other tribespeople would stay home and manage their camp.
Job specialization is why hunter/gatherer societies ended because hunter-gatherers specialized into herders and farmers. Camp eventually included herds, and more people were staying behind. Some time later they figured out how to farm and made camps permanent into permanent residence.
@@philsburydoboy yup, you nailed it.
The first minute in a half gave me a headache 😂
I'd love it if you could attempt to tame animals. Get some guard wolves etc at the risk of getting mauled. Also. Wolf packs would be great but probably a lot of work to get them roaming and hunting as a pack.
