- A quick view of the tools used to remove the knock sensor on a 1998 Nissan Maxima without removing the intake manifold. The sensor is located fairly deep under the intake and can be difficult to remove and replace. I share in this video how I got the job done, quick and easy with some small hand help!
Most times the knock sensor code will only be realized when using a scanner to detect there is an issue. I was scanning for an unrelated problem when i found code P0325. The check engine light was NOT on indicating a problem. I did here some very minor pinging from time to time before the fix.

soooooo much easier than removing the upper and lower intake manifold like I was told to do.
thanks man! livesaver
Glad it helped out Matt, you are welcome
Glad that you liked the video, thanks for watching!
Good question. This particular model year the check engine light will NOT light up on the dashboard indicating there is a problem with the knock sensor. I happened to run a diagnostic scan tool for something else and this code appeared. The key evidence was even though the car had premium fuel I would occasionally hear slight pinging from the engine under hard acceleration. After the repair the pinging was gone and so was the hidden trouble code on the scan tool. Hope that helps, take care.
I had the same problem with my 04 I35. The slight pinging with premium fuel being used with no check engine light on or codes and only 80k miles. The 2000-03 Maxima and 01-04 I35 with the 3.5L were the same set up as far as changing without pulling the upper intake. Small hands and good lighting required.
Nice helper. Sad my kids are too old to help me on this one
My big paws wouldn't fit. Time to recruit!
Excellent Great description Ozzstar!! Thank you for posting. How much time did the replacement take? I'm going to give it a shot thanks to your great video!
Took about 10 minutes total, thanks to my helpers small hands! Good luck with your fix. Take it easy Fly- Ozz
I have a check engine light on. Pep Boys ran diag. and said I had to replace the knock sensor. And also said the light usually wont come on for knocking. You are saying the complete opposite. I don;t hear knocking or pinging. If it is sensing knocking do you have a suggestion on how to fix it? Thanks
I can't determine location for p0139 if u could help pls. . bank 1 sensor 2
That's me and my kids! lol! 😊
How do u know that u need a knock sensor? Like what are the signs?
hey ozzstar is that knock sensor in the vid. under the lower intake?and what did you take off to give you room to get to it?.i got a 1999 maxima california and i can hardly see the sensor
California model has a lot of emission equiptment. This is a non-CA car, nothing was removed to get access. If the intake manifold is removed there is clear access. You need a service manual to guide you in the right direction. Thanks for watching
Yeah thanks for the reply I have to take the upper and lower off
Lol HEY WHERE IS MY 10 DOLLARS!?!?! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Ozzstar well i did the reset the light. Its still coming up p0325. I ordered the ks brand new off ebay. CEL is on and reading knock sensor. I have a 99 max gle. Also on the ks harness is it supposed to have 2 wires on one end and 1 wire coming out the other end?
I have neer seen a bad knock sensor set the check engine light. Usually it is a hidden code that in only detected with a scanner

Lovell Binns p0325
hey ozzstar, I got this check engine light on.need to pass emission but was told that codes are P0400(EGR flow malfunction) and knock sensor.plssssss helppppppp
Hi Qobby, start by inspecting and checking the EGR flow sensor, it may be dirty or defective. If the sensor checks out okay, the problem may be an issue with a clogged EGR tube (P0400) or a problem with the EGR itself. Most likely the EGR pipe is clogged with carbon and will need to be taken apart and cleared out. A knock sensor problem (P0325) will NOT cause the dashboard check engine light to turn on in the 4th generation Maxima (1996-99). It can only be 'seen' with a scan tool. Good luck with your diagnosis and thanks for watching
I replaced my knock sensor brand new, but the code still showing it knock sensor...help!!!
Did you reset the ECM? The computer will store the code in memory.... use a scan tool or disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset.
On my 2K maxima way deep inside
Damn how do I teach my 2 year old to tighten it for me
How long did that amazon knock sensor last?
Seven years so far. This one happens to be my car.
Ozzstar's Cars great, i bought a i30 with 227000 on the clock that just needs some tlc. And idea why my mass airflow sensor isn’t working properly? I resoldered it and partially cleaned it but noticed a lot of carbon on the metal screen. Do you know if thst could throw it off or not?
@@alvincrowder9545 a dirty MAF is never a good thing. These Nissan/Infinity of this generation are known for EGR blockage, I have a good video on that subject.
Ozzstar's Cars thanks! And also whenever the car is warmed up and i unscrew the gas cap i can hear air release as if the tank isn’t being properly ventilated. Any idea on that? Sorry for all the questions btw.
@@alvincrowder9545look up evap systems and how they function. To much to type here.
Is hard to change sr..??
Not if you have small hands.
@@ozzstars_cars ok thanks
I spent 2 hour trying to remove it and 2 hour to put it back .nightmare
It's not the easiest thing to do but it's done, that's the good part
Doesn't the Nissan maxima have 2 knock sensors
One knock sensor.....and that's it
I was told it was two. Im confused but Ill get it together.
B. Cleveland it has one i been through the knock sensor deal buy it off ebay alot cheaper than the auto store
$10 dollars back then went a long ways 😄
Ain't that the honest truth. 😪 Miss those days, never going back unfortunately.
Come to think of it Will. You could buy for $10 a really nice set of yoga pants triple stitched in the crotch area for that needed support.
