I think the same. Due to Covid-19 I think they had to wait with the release on year, instead of releasing it on his 40th birthday. Also they did not say a single word about his birthday last year so I think they are waiting for the right time so celebrate his birthday. You can also see it like this; Nintendo celebrated Monkeyball and not DK so they will sooner or later give him a real celebration.

Kong Watch always gets me excited for any and all news, and reignites my passion for DK. From the series always being a masterpiece in both visuals and music, I would not be surprised if they nearly pushed the limits of the Switch in the worldbuilding alone, definitely taking a lot more time to make than other titles. I would love to have a new DK game. But I don't think anything will be shown until next year. It's not just Nintendo but every game series publisher isn't putting anything big out this year (aside from COD), with most announcements made shown to be next year or the year after due to the cough or other setbacks. I think if they did have DK ready they'll make an announcement early spring or summer next year with a DK game coming that fall or next year. Also, there's just pure cope if people actually think Metroid Prime is coming out this holiday season. That game got sent back to the drawing board after Nintendo's in-house team couldn't complete it and required Retro to help make it. It's going to end up as a sendoff Switch title or whatever's next after the Switch.

While I definitely agree and encourage the skepticism of Zippo, "gone gold" doesn't necessarily mean it's going to launch soon. All going gold means is that the game is completed, and ready to launch. Nintendo has a history of sitting on finished games for months at a time until they decide they're ready to release it. But yeah, I'm conflicted on whether to expect any news this year or not. All signs seem to be pointing to something coming eventually, just no idea when.
As much as I'd love Donkey Kong to return again, I really don't think we're gonna see him for a little bit. I think we're at a point where they'd rather push out a new mainline Mario game first considering it's been nearly 5 years since Odyssey now. And I don't mean to come off as rude here, but if you DON'T believe that Pokémon is their 2022 holiday game, you're clueless, plain and simple. That franchise is more than enough to carry them into Christmas regardless of quality.
Obviously Pokemon can carry them through a holiday, it's Pokemon no shit. But I count Pokemon as a separate entity. Nintendo usually tends to have some sort of Holiday release of their own. I don't think a new Dk necessarily means no Mario, and vice versa.

You could technically count Xenoblade 2 as well, but that's more Monolift Soft and way more niche. 2018 had Smash Ultimate. Fair enough. 2019 had Luigi's Mansion 3, but that's much more of a Halloween thing than Christmas, so it feels weird to count that. Other than that... what did they have? Ring Fit Adventure? Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games? 2020 had Pikmin 3 Deluxe, a Wii U port, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which was definitely big, but would only appeal to people who were already fans of Breath of the Wild. Finally, 2021 had Metroid Dread, fine but definitely niche, and Mario Party Superstars, a big one for families. Moving into 2022, unless Nintendo pulls a surprise under their belt, I'm assuming they're positioning Mario + Rabbids as their big Holiday release. I mean, the first game was a big enough success that I wouldn't doubt them for doing that. There's also Bayonetta 3, but that's more Platinum Games and definitely doesn't connect with families, especially super religious ones. But even if there isn't anything beyond that, Nintendo doesn't need to from a business standpoint, because like I said, Pokémon alone will make them bank as we've seen with Sword & Shield, their DLC, and the Diamond & Pearl remakes. Considering how well Dread performed, I really hope Nintendo is re-evaluating how they treat some of their less utilized franchises.

If there is an new switch hardware coming out I would like that Nintendo also realises the dk game on the original switch too.
