It was very hard to see where the leak was coming from. Finally guessed it was the bowl gasket......then I found your video. Thanks. I was a boat mechanic back in the 70's and 80's. My motor is brand new but had been sitting in the box for 2 years. I guess it just dried out. Your videos are great!

When you dropped the check valve into the bowl did you first insert it upside down? The flat end should be down correct? If not I have mine installed upside down. I could not see from the video how you finally put it in.
Disregard. I was able to slow and zoom. You did indeed put it in backwards when you demonstrated how it can fall out but installed with the nipple end up.
I enjoy learning from your videos , I have a 2011 40 hp mercury and starts just fine but when trimming up there’s fuel in the water and can’t seem to find where it’s coming from ?
Is it possibly oil in the water? maybe from the power trim or lower unit?
Hello I have some issues on my Nissan outboard motor. After I clean my carburetor. The motor run a lot fast then before . on the neutral gear , it like have lot (gas or power). When I move to forward position, my boat move fast without need gas . Also I can’t put the reverse gear when the motor is on. What’s the problem? Do I mess up the carburetor ？ please help thanks
Sounds to me like you need to adjust the idle speed. It will also idle fast if your choke linkage is not connected properly or if the carb is not sealed to the manifold correctly. Hope that helps.
how do you use outboard serial number to find parts? i could neva find it that way lol. only way i can find parts is by typing in model number in. but when i try to order carb repair kit, water pump repair kit all i ever receive is gaskets, theres not other parts to it. i want to always have extra parts in hand just incase something goes out. but yea all i receive is mostly couple rubber gaskets. i have a 2006 10hp johnson 4stroke short shaft (j10r4sd). can you show me how to look for it please?
Johnson Evinrude is not a very common motor around our shop. There are not a lot of aftermarket parts available, compared with Merc or Yamaha, so most of the time we go direct to our local dealer and they look up the parts for us, using either the model or serial number. Very professional video. I have 15 HP 4 cycle Mercury OB 1f15201HK serial OR442734. I leaks gas from the 3rd line from the Tee. Is that a float problem? Where is that line supposed to go? Thanks for your help.
Hi Robert, Thanks for your kind words.
If I understand you correctly you are referring to the Tee that also has a hose on it that goes to the top of the carb? If that is correct, that is a breather hose, the third line is simply a vent and not connected to anything, sometimes it will connect to a small connector at the bottom of the engine cowl which simply vents to the atmosphere. If you have fuel coming from that vent line it is because the float bowl is over full, most likely a float or needle and seat issue.
If you remove the carb, and turn it upside down you should not be able to blow into the fuel inlet as I show in the video.
Where does the vent hose on the top of the carburetor go what does it hook to? is it just hanging?
That depends on make and model? On many it does just hang down. If the carb floods and overflows, the excess fuel will run into the bottom of the cowl and out the drains ,leaving a visible trail on the water to alert you to the overflow issue.
i have one that leaks below the float where the spring is on the bottom any idea how to fix that?

Do you have recommendations on same engine filling crank case with fuel while running?
A very common problem that causes that is a ruptured diaphragm in the fuel pump.
How would you replace the diaphragm for the accelerator?
The small plastic knob on the top of the pushrod shaft simply pulls off so you can slid the diaphram down through the housing.
hi，monster！ my 9.9 carb first start very easy, and keep idle for 1 min，it will turn off and many gas outflow from carb， but i cant know where outflow from . my carb same as yours, could you help me to diagnose it， i from china, that is really hard to watch youtube, thank you !
Two very common problems with the Mercury 9.9 carbs that will cause your problem are either the needle and seat is leaking, or the float bowl gasket is leaking where the fuel inlet goes through from the bowl to the main body of the carb. Remove the carb from the engine, flip it over and remove the float bowl and check your gasket first. if it looks good then remove the float and check for something holding the needle open.

What do you charge to to a job like this?
A couple variables to answer that question. Did the owner just bring me the carb? Or did he bring me the whole boat? Is the carb dirty, full of corrosion or fuel varnish? Does the motor have other issues that need to be diagnosed and addressed?
At the risk of oversimplifying, if you brought me a motor, complaining of a fuel leak, and the only issue is re-sealing the carb, 2 hours plus parts should wrap it up.
BUT. there is almost always something else going on that needs addressing as well when the motor finally gets brought to me. So every job gets charged accordingly.
