  • This is a great one that I don't see very often, but it will trip you up if you are not aware of it. Basically it is a low float level causing a lean mixture. This causes a high speed miss, or stumble or surging, usually at half throttle or more, but can be through the entire rpm range. It can also cause a poor quality idle, or an idle that slowly gets worse until the engine finally stops running. This is a 40 hp Mercury outboard missing, stumbling and surging at high speed, low on power. This problem is applicable to Yamahas, Mercurys, Tohatsu, Suzuki, and any other four stroke outboard motor with a carburetor, or multiple carbs. Because the float level is non adjustable on these carbs most people just put them together without even checking the float level. This video show great details on how to check and then adjust a float level.

    Have one similar but when float drops the needle hangs, the float is not pulling on the needle. Sanding the black tab I good hack, thank youbfor that, working on a merc 75 4 st. Hate 4 stroke carb motors !! The carbs always seem to have issues.

      You may be missing the retaining clip that connects the float to the needle. It is a very fine wire clip, easy to misplace.
      Four stroke carbs are very different from two strokes mainly because of the smaller jets, but also the lack of oil in the mix. Proper fuel system maintenance is key to reliable four stroke carbs, and unfortunately most people do not keep the maintenance up properly.
      Water separating fuel filter, (Replaced annually), ethanol free fuel, drain or run carbs dry when not using for a while, and fuel stabilizer are a very good start.

    How tight do u tighten the float screw down? Looked like not too tight?

    Does this work for 2 strokes too? Being parallel with carb body?

    Hello, i have a problem with my carburetors on a 1976 115hp evinrude outboard that leaks when the motor is tilted. I just put in new carburetor rebuild kit and the problem is still there. Not quite sure if that's normal or there's something else I need to check too. The floats are pretty parallel according to my eyes. I throw it in the carburetor cleaner for about 3 hours. When I put it together, the problem didn't go away. This gas leaking was always there when i got the motor. I tried everything I know. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. That would be a great help. Thank you...

    Got a 2013 tahatsu 15hp 4 stroke...can the float be adjusted with only the plastic needle holder (solid needle)?

    • @CanadaWideMarine
      @CanadaWideMarine  Před rokem

      Technically no. But, if your float level is incorrect you can try using a heat gun to warm the plastic of the float to bend to correct height, or if the float level is too low you can very carefully sand the end of the needle that contacts the float to correct the float level. First I would want to be sure to identify exactly why the float level is incorrect.

      Gotcha! Good advice. It's dumping fuel out of the overflow. Needle is fine...carb is clean..

      I have the same issue on a 30hp Mercury. Intermittently leaking gas out of one of the overflows. Did you find a solution for yours?
