    I had forgotten what the vet clinic room looked like, and when you showed the old video of that room-WOW! What a difference. The restoration you’ve done is simply fantastic! The love and attention to methods and details really shines through. Your tiling looks great too. I’d have never guessed you’d never done this before. You truly have a gift for this kind of work, and I think you’ll be very successful going forward. Wonderful update! Take care and can’t wait to see the progress next time!

    The shower looks great. We finished off part of our basement. We used black and white tiles on the floor, but we used pressed tin panels on the ceiling, fastened with hex screws. We found that when we later needed to access mechanicals in that ceiling, that it was much easier to unscrew a few panels than to cut into drywall. Press tin is still made in a variety of delightful vintage patterns.

    Tiles are looking fantastic! Good job - it's hard to believe that's yours first attempt. I've seen a lot of tiles on walls placed by professionals and some of them wasn't quite as nice. You made it with love and care - and it really matters!

  • @Clarinetboy82
    @Clarinetboy82 Před 6 měsíci +21

    That shower is coming along nicely! As for an edge, have you considered wrapping that crown around the edge instead of that plastic edging? That's what they would have done with a border tile like that in the old days. If you stick with the plastic edging it will look nice too. Just be aware that white plastic tends to yellow over time.
    I love when a room starts to come together! It's great satisfaction, and everything seems to happen fast when rooms are near the stage of completion! The old vets office is looking amazing!

      I'm confused, too, as to why he's not using narrow tiles with a rounded edge. They do make them. I'm worried not just about yellowing, but also about the plastic becoming brittle. Carrying heavy or large things past there, it seems like the plastic could shatter or be crushed...

    For the pencil and top tiles, you should try cutting the edge on a 45 and making a thin 45 degree piece to end it into the wall, so it's not ending on an unpainted, and unglazed edge. That's how people end their ceiling coving, so it should look good for tiling too.

Seeing what is planned for the other areas would help with understanding the relationship between completed/future projects. Also, have you considered adding bullnose tile along the edges of both sides of the shower? The basement looks so much brighter with the paint!

  • @Lucinda_Jackson
    @Lucinda_Jackson Před 6 měsíci +1

    Love the shower, Kaleb! My daughter's home is from the same time period (1910-1920) and she just redid a bathroom. It was all pretty original except somebody replaced the pedestal sink with a vanity in the 80s. She enlarged the room considerably, which meant needing to "recreate" using modern materials. The bath originally had a tub with a shower attachment that was added later and she opted to refinish and reuse the tub but run the tile higher around that area and plumb for a shower.
    The entire room originally had white subway tile about 2/3 to 3/4 up the walls all around with a black pencil stripe running around just below the final row of white subway tiles. Those tiles were about half the height of the regular subway tiles. She did the same except she topped the line of black pencil tiles at the top with the same white crown you're using. She had to replace the floor since she'd enlarged the room. It was originally the classic black and white pattern and she opted for the same exact black and white tile configuration but with slightly smaller tiles. And she added a double black and white border around the edge. And, of course, the vanity is long gone, replaced by a big, beautiful pedestal sink. It's new, because she wanted a large one and couldn't find a vintage, salvaged one that was big enough. It has appropriate styling, though.
    You'd like her bathroom, I think.

    Fantastic, hello from Ireland. We are very lucky to have so many old houses still with original features, I love the Georgian and Victorian houses best. I live in a house from the late 1700's. Most of the old houses in my area are made into several units inside. You are doing an outstanding job and I have been following your progress. We need more people like you who restore the beauty of old homes. You are a history saving hero!

      Also from Ireland and also living in a late 1700s house! Totally agree, serious work saving history. The house we live in was unsympathetically ‘restored’ by the owner and it grinds my gears, so much potential lost. Thanks for fighting the good fight, Kaleb!

      @@elephante2002 Totally agree about how rage inducing it is when people take old houses and totally modernise them inside making a complete mismatch. Lovely to see channels like this and the love and hard work to bring it back to it's original beauty. Thank you Kaleb, looks like you have a few fans in Ireland as well as all over the world, well deserved.

    As far as the discoloration of the tiles. Try to match color with paint and touch up then seal.

    I love how thoughtful you are with planning your changes for practicality, while keeping true to the period esthetic. Not always easy to do, and sometimes you have to put in 'the best thing you can find now', with the hope of the perfect antique popping up some time in the future. The needle shower (also heard them called 'ribcage' showers) implies needle-like jets of water rather than the typical spray. I do hope it works. Here hard water deposits would clog it sooner than later. I've had to make the choice to go with modern reproductions on certain things, when the original just won't work. Case in point: the 7.5 gallon tank 1931 original toilet which was technically illegal here in water strapped Southern California by 2003. The shower looks wonderful, and the design just sings with the original flooring. Our period bathroom tile has bull-nose edges, but the vintage flat tiles are much thicker than what is available now. Always a challenge, but those keep life interesting, no? :)

    So....Will the shower will not have a door? Will it be open to the main room??? Would appreciate of u can show us a plan of what u want to achieve in the future......I personally thought the door will be where the wall of the shower ends.....am confused😅

      this room is a tricky layout for sure. Had I put a door at the end and extended the wall we would have to loose an an original cabinet (one of those doors). So we opted to move the door on other side of shower and enclose the toilet and sink only. we would have prefer to keep sink out of toilet room as well but with the way the door swings we had no option that allowed that configuration.

    That shower & tile floor is gorgeous. I love the 1920s glamourous look of the whole room. It reminds me of those old b&w movies that show sophisticated, art deco designs that are so luxurious. Perhaps a marble countertop for the sink will be period correct? ( 1920's period not Victorian) because you are right, the house maybe Victorian but the basement is totally 1910-20's and beautiful.

    You could always take the horizontal crown tile and picture frame it / wrap it and run it vertical.

    I am so glad you are saving the tile. I have seen people in other projects rip out this thick tile that you cannot get anymore. And if you can it is very expensive! 😢😮😊
