I never knew you could speak so slow and still get such a high word count. I assumed you had to talk real fast. This actually makes me want to try dictation again. Thanks for the tips!
Oh yes! I learned that from doing the exercises in Fool Proof Dictation. They have you set a timer and read a passage and slow down enough where you get it all in a minute or two minutes (can’t remember exactly how long!). It was MIND BLOWING. I always thought people spoke super fast too, but it’s not the case!
@@TheCourtneyProject I’ll definitely pick up that book!
Thank you for sharing this app!! I didn’t know about it and I only dictate my writing because of an injury I got during Nanowrimo 7 years ago. I have written several books using Dragon software, but I recently had to switch over to dictating in google docs after getting a MacBook Air (for self-publishing reasons), and it is nowhere near as accurate as Dragon. So this will probably save my life. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart ❤️
Oh yay! That makes me happy! I hope it works out for you! I’ve heard when you upgrade, it learns your speech like Dragon but I’ve never gotten close to the 600 minutes. Hopefully it’s better than google docs. :) It’s worth trying out for 10 hours a month before upgrading.
I’ve been experimenting with dictation! I’ve just been using my google docs voice to text option and it’s far from perfect but allows me to get words when I otherwise wouldn’t (like out walking). Hadn’t heard of otter and now I have to check it out.
Glad you’re safe after all the Texas weather craziness!
There are a lot of writers who use the Google docs option! I haven’t tried it yet! And thank you! It’s 77 degrees today, LOL, Texas said you’re getting every season in February.
Courtney! This was so great, thank you. Dragon always seemed to have a steep learning curve and it was off-putting. I just tested this and it is EASY!!!! Let the words flow! Thank you so much!!!!
Oh yay!!! So happy it’s working out for you! And same, dragon and me were not friends. Haha, I tried.
I'm glad you and your family are safe, but feel terrible for the tough times you've gone through and the struggles. This is perfect timing for this topic/video. I know I need to be more active and I've wanted to get into dictation since last year but it seems daunting. Thank you for your advice!
Thank you! After the last 14 months, nothing surprises me anymore. 😂 Try it out a few times per week for little 10 minute sessions! Once the awkwardness wears off, you’ll be golden!
@@TheCourtneyProject thank you! I will SO take your advice on the breaks. Just signed up! It's funny, you've got the sweet/sassy/sexy stuff and I've got the dark/paranoid/murdery stuff to speak aloud haha
@@emeraldobrien5543 hahaha right! It does get a little 🔥
It had been a while since I'd watched one of your videos, even though your advice was foundational for me when I started self-publishing. I did a youtube search the other day on how to do dictation for fiction and was SO delighted and relieved when you were one of the hits that came up! I knew you could help me with this and you totally did. Thank you for making this video!
(I just tried it for the first time and got 800+ words in 13 min)
Aww I just saw this! Congrats! I hope you’re still practicing. :)
So glad that you and your loved ones haven't had too hard a time out there. I've tried dictation in the past and it's something that I want to learn to do but it just never feels natural. I know in the long run, though, it would be a lot better for me. I've come across otter in the past and thought about using it, but wasn't sure how it worked, so thanks for putting it up on the screen. I'm definitely gonna give it a go and pull out my dictation books again . . . even if I have to lock myself in the car to do it. Life as a romance writer with kids, lol.
Thank you! It didn’t feel natural for me either and I talk a lot 😂😂😂 I’d just try it for 10 minutes a few times per week. Eventually it doesn’t feel so foreign and you’ll be busting those words out in no time!
I heard you talk about Otter and this video on the livestream and came here to investigate. Thanks for sharing how you actually use it, I appreciate the demonstration! It seems waaay simpler than anything I've seen before, so I may just try it. Thank you!
Yay! I’m so glad you found this video! I love otter! :)
Thanks for the tips and your take on dictation! So glad you are feeling better and you escaped the crazy last week...we, too, were fortunate...never lost power or water. Everyone we know had pipe breaks or power outages. So grateful! Am excited to try dictation again with this app! The punctuation for Dragon always impeded my flow with creative writing. You are always a welcome ray of sunshine! 🌞 Thank you! 🥳
Oh yay! I’m so glad you didn’t lose power or have any pipes break! And yay! I hope it works out for you! ALSO... TYSM FOR ALL THE COFFEE! I didn’t check my PO Box for 6 weeks... 💀💀💀💀 and then I was like OMGGGGGG.... TINA IS AMAZING! So thank you from the bottom and top of my heart. ❤️❤️❤️
@@TheCourtneyProject You are so welcome! Totally inspired! I do hope you also received your coffee mugs...one for you and one for your hubs! Or...return for something you want camping! Generosity comes from the heart and YOU...sweet lady...ooze generosity!!! Get ready for so much love to come back to you in oh so many ways! 🥳
Oh my gosh, I swear you are a God Send! I struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis & Fibromyalgia, and get flares during the winter or when it's raining like crazy. So, as you can imagine, writing has essentially drawn close to a halt and most my joints constantly sound like rice krispies popping. I have tried Dragon in the past but I just couldn't wrap my head around it. It was a major learning curve for me but then again I'm an alien. So, I started trying random apps on my phone but some of them were wonky as most don't handle punctuation commands well. I will def go give Otter a try! Thank you so much for this, us visual leaners appreciate it a whole lot!
Aww, yay! We all start somewhere with new writing processes! I did the same thing. I’ve probably downloaded 5 apps! So happy I could help! I hope it works out for you!
Ahh, thank you for this! I've been getting horrible migraines and want to work on cutting my screentime down. Can't wait to try this out!
Yes ma’am! I hope it worked out for you. I’m a part of the migraine family too. Sucks so bad!
Thanks for this video. This program seems like it will be super useful in these ventures.
However I thought it worth mentioning if you guys dont want to have to break up a huge wall of text, when exporting just uncheck "show time stamps" and "merge speakers". This will preserve the spaces in your text.
You dont have to export as monologue.
Yes you will have to go back and remove extra spaces but to me, you're already going over it for other edits and I'd rather remove spaces than try and figure out where I need a space. :) hope this helps someone
Thank you sweetheart!
This video is two years old now, but I hope you check in from time to time. I am at the same level as you were back then. Trying to get the writing from my fingers to my mouth. As you pointed out in this video, I too slow down when I write. However, watching pros dictating, they don't slow down. I do think we just have to get more use to it. One hint tough: You need a professional mic to be able to dictate without errors! The better the mic is, the better the result!
Hi! I do check in and thanks for your comment! I’ve actually been testing the dictation on my iPad (the built in one) and it’s actually pretty good! Love having options. Still practicing with this and have gotten better but I write 90% of my words. Looking forward to getting to 50%!
Hopefully you’re doing well! Practice makes perfect!
Thank you so much. I'm excited to try dictation. Very helpful video.
Yay! Hope you like it! ❤️
Thank you so much for sharing! 🙌 Gonna try this. 😁
You’re welcome! 🙌🙌
Am glad to hear you are safe and sounds. Oh how I love dial up. We still had it at our cabin in Wyoming 2 years ago.
2 years ago? 😂😂😂
I guess in the mountains it would be hard to get stable internet!
@@TheCourtneyProject yep, we finally got some high speed but it isn’t very good to stream movies.
I have dragon for my computer, but decided to try Otter for my cell phone. I love that it does punctuation and it corrects itself sometimes to add commas when needed! As you said, it does want to change my MC Amelia to Emilia, but that’s a small thing. Love it!
Oh yay, Lanie! Now you’ll be dictating on the go! We always have our cell phones with us so it makes it easy! ❤️ That makes me happy!
This is just the video I've been looking for. Thank you for all the advice, I've been struggling with dictation and which app to use for some time.
You’re welcome! ❤️
Thank you for this video! I have been looking into dictation because I take the dog for a walk every morning so if I can take advantage of that time, I could really increase my writing output. I love the idea of writing on the go, or even walking around my flat. I haven't heard of Otter, but I'm installing as we speak and maybe tomorrow morning I'll give it a go! Thanks!
Oh yay! Let me know how it goes! ❤️🙌
@@TheCourtneyProject I tried it while cooking dinner and found that I did get a lot of words down....and I sliced about half an aubergine 😂 I will need some practice before I can talk while doing something else with my hands! It still requires a lot of concentration. But I did get a lot done! I'll keep working on it 👍
@@TheCourtneyProject ok this has changed my life. In the last three days I've gotten so much done! Thank you for this!
I don't know if I'll ever use this but that was a great tutorial. Thank you!
You’re welcome! ❤️
I knew this was a thing but wasn't familiar with it, so thank you. I also sometimes have to wear something to help my wrists. This is definitely something I'm going to look in to. Thank you!!
You’re welcome! Wrist soreness is reallllll.
@@TheCourtneyProject Oh yeah.
I'm writing a nonfiction book right now (helping software teams) and I wrote the entire book by speaking into my phone and letting it populate my Notes app. I'm now going through the book and expanding upon *everything* that I previously 'wrote.' I didn't realize that this was a thing, until someone in one of my Facebook groups asked about dictation. My hat's off to you fiction folks, because in my case I'm just giving myself a TED talk; y'all are creating life from your heads while you speak.
Thank you for all the great tips! I've been wanting to try dictation, and now I'm going to stop procrastinating. I'm more pantser than plotter (really, I'm a plantser), but I'm going to take your advice on outlining. Thanks again!
This was super helpful! Thank you.
You’re welcome! ❤️
Glad you and yours are safe. Thought I’d add to what you said.
First, Dragon is not the same as it once was. Especially Dragon Naturally Speaking, you do not have to put the punctuation perfectly. It of course recognizes it but will also auto populate grammar. And it does a really good job. Also it learns your voice. So it would learn how you say Owen for example.
For those who throat starts to hurt etc. Take notice of how you are speaking. Often times people project more than is necessary for dictating. Talk like you would on a FaceTime with friends or family. You will get a lot further. And yes, all of the warm beverages.
If you do want to pick up speed. Get in the habit of re dedicating. I will sometimes dictate a sentence knowing it could be better and then just dictate it again. I do this a ton. It keeps the momentum and will help dictating faster. Of course you will have to edit the first sentence out but almost always you know the second sentence was stronger. In dragon I would say new line. With otter you’ll have to just find the similar sentence.
Lastly, I know a lot of people do not use dictation for editing/revising but on the second pass I will literally dictate the entire book and dictate whatever changes. So essentially you redraft completely. Then I will spot edit on the third draft take out the original material that I may have repeated or fine tuned.
The Dragon Anywhere app did not have those options and I paid $15 a month for it, unless they updated it in 2021. Maybe you’re referring to the desktop version, but that’s not available for mac users anymore.
I’ve heard of these magical unicorn people who redraft and edit with dictation. I don’t think that’s for me at the skill level I am with it, seems overly intimidating. But thanks for the insight.
You can also use otter on your computer. When you click on the timestamps it will playback what you were saying at that time which can help with the self-editing.
Oh that’s cool! I never thought of that!
What a great video, thank you! I could never make Dragon work for me, but this sounds very doable!
So helpful for this newbie...thank you!
You’re welcome!
Dictation is such a foreign concept to me. In the middle of your video, I paused it and tried to speak a couple paragraphs of what I might write. No bueno! I will really need to practice!
Practicing helped me a lot. My first few 5 minutes of dictating were 😳💀
Helpful practical
I often have ideas in the car so I am hoping I can learn to dictate while driving. Also walking and talking would be a lot better for me than sitting for 10 hours a day!
That would be a perfect time to try it out!
this was outstanding, thanks.
Thank you! ❤️❤️
This was so helpful!
Yay!!
So cool !
❤️❤️❤️
This is amazing
I worked at an investigation firm where all the investigators were required to dictate their reports. I would then edit the reports before sending them off to transcription. Some investigators were great at dicating and others were too lazy to really care. It boils down to practicing and caring about what you're trying to accomplish. I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm always coming up with sentences in my head when I'm not near any kind of writing device and I always thought I should learn to dictate. Thank you for the great tips 😀
Oh man, that sucks they didn’t care! I hope it works out for you! One time I just drove around dictated my thoughts with it. 😂😂 Picked up all of my road rage too!
Damn, watching this in October is a weird blast from the past. XD I'm up near Austin and wow that storm was SOMETHING. Glad you didn't have to deal with much from it.
The last two years have been crazy town. 😂
Great tips, will check out Otter for sure. I'm trying to get more into dictating and have just been using the built-in one in my Mac, and I laughed so much when you mentioned the name problem. Because I thought it was my Danish accent that makes the computer write 'bread' every time I mention the name Brett, and just as consistently it just won't ever write beach but writes bitch LOL, which is a problem when the location of the story is on a beach. Otter seems more effective from what you showed on the screen.
Oh, and by the way that globe on your shelf is amazing!
Hahahaha! It’s not just you! There have been a few words that I’ve just given up on completely. 😂😂 You’ll have to let me know if Otter gets those words wrong too!
Thank you for this 🙂
You're welcome 😊
Thank you very much.
You’re welcome! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!
Welcome!!!
This was helpful. Thx.
Happy you found it helpful!
Courtney, thank you for that fantastic tip about Otter. I have Dragon and Otter looks easier. And, you don't need your laptop to start. Fantastic. At the time of this comment, Dragon 16 is like $700. The upgrade from 15 is half of that. They are nuts! So, great tip.
Thank you so much for this video, Courtney! I've got two bad wrists. One has tendonitis and the other has a sprained ligament plus carpal tunnel. I was so depressed because I thought my writing career was over before it even started. Dictation to the rescue! Also, I am SO glad to know about Otter. I had done some dictation practice in Google Docs and having to say, "period" and "comma" and "start quotation", etc. was a royal pain in the behind.
I'm curious about why you use Scrivener (which I do have) vs. Google Docs. I'm still trying to decide between the two. I'll go check your other videos to see if you've already covered it.
Yay! Otter is great! I can’t say enough good things about it. When I would have to speak punctuation it just ruined my train of thought. Oh, so I started using scrivener because we edit in google docs. It will max out with how many comments you have when you’re doing suggestive changes. So, to not mess up our shared doc, we write in separate places then paste our chapters in gdocs. Also, we’re both usually writing at the same time so the doc would jump places. We still use google docs though! I use scrivener in its most basic form, like word with folders. 😂
Fantastic job. I am absolute virgin to all of this. so appreciate you so much... Paul
thank you ❤❤❤
It's been a while since I tried dictation and I hated it because I "think through my fingers" - but I think it's also because I think fast but speak slow (that introvertedness!) so I may just go ahead an give it another chance, and speak with intention... Thank you for this video!
You’re welcome! It was awkward at first for me too. Taking it slow is a good thing. It really does get easier the more you try it, but make small goals of 10 minutes a day then progress. Eventually you’ll be able to dictate an entire book! Hope it works out for you! ❤️
I am very attracted to dictation. I've used it in google docs for brainstorming. I think I need to get a lot more organised in my chapter planning before being able to really make it work for me, though.
It helps when attacking it with a plan!
.🙏🙏 Thank you SOOOOOo much!
I work as a captioning agent for a customer service company. This would be perfect for me. 😍😍😍
Oh fantastic! I’ve used it to see if it would hell me CC my videos! It’s pretty accurate. I just play my video, let it record, and then read over it. Hope it works out for you!
@@TheCourtneyProject thanks. Super helpful video. 😀
Such helpful info. I've got to check this out. Anything to speed up my slow ass writing. 😒
Haha same! 🙌🙌
Wow! I can't thank you enough for this information, but let me start: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! }:)
Thank youuuuuu! ❤️
I love dictation! Although I always feel like I’m cheating lol. 🤪🤪 But hey, when the words are flowing- I’m happy!!’🌼🌼
Heck yeah!!
Your awesome
Thank you! 🙂
Hi! I appreciate this information. I am deciding if dictating will work for me. When you did the live demo, I noticed that when you paused and then resumed, it would start on a new line. I wondered if this might be a workaround for not having a "paragraph" command.
Texas too
Woohoo!
I'd really love to see someone dictate a sample scene. Do you dictate exactly the same as if you were typing (dialogue, description etc.) or is it a bit looser in the dictation part and then you get more specific when you go to clean it up? Dictation seems so interesting to me (especially since I get easily distracted while drafting lol) but I don't know if my brain can speak sentences as well as I can type them if that makes sense lol
so update I used your tips and otter and transcribed ~1200 words in 25 minutes on my lunch break. So I might be a convert after all lol
Oh yay! When I read through I’ll add embellishments. I think the main goal (at least for me) with dictation is to get the foundation of the chapter down. Then I go back and clean it up and add additional descriptions and stuff. But I do that when I self edit after the book is done too, so it’s a layered process! Glad it worked for you! You’re a natural already!
Thanks for the video! It has been massively helpful with the tips and resources. You mention that you're part of a facebook dictation group, is it Dragon Riders or something else? I would love to join the community.
It’s called Dictation for Authors. :) So glad you found it helpful!
must have gone well--candle look high:)
Hahaha yes! One shot, 28 minutes max!
Rad info thanks for taking the time to post. Very inspiring I think I’m going to dictate this NANOWRIMO.
Awesome! You’ll have to let me know how it goes!
@@TheCourtneyProject ok so this feels like going from riding a bike to driving a car. 10,000 words in two days with dictating during my drive time and editing chapters as I go. I’m sold. Feels like cheating! Lol
@@strangeplaces1480 That’s INCREDIBLE! Lol, NaNo who? At this rate, you’ll have two drafts done in November!
This is really interesting! I may have to give it a shot. I talk too fast and even though my accent is gone, I still say things in a southern way that dictation just can’t seem to pick up. Knowing that I can talk slower and still get a lot of words in an hour is good to know. I may need to try this with a new book I’m going to be writing which will only be 10k to 25k.
I have a couple of questions: do you dictate those steamy scenes? If so, is it awkward to do so?
Yes, you don’t have to rush! LOL, I dictated everything. I also only have the hubs around and go into my office so I’m alone. 😂😂
@@TheCourtneyProject Right now we have a full house. There are 3 other people (3 of us live here full time) and my cousin along with two babies will be here tomorrow until Friday. If I give it a try I’ll have to go to my room or wait until everyone goes to bed. Because as soon as I’m doing something, someone will come and interrupt me, lol
Ive used the app speechnotes on my android and though it doesnt pick up some words (im sure its something im doing) its awrsome so far plus it auto saves to google drive. But i might check out otter.
Oh nice! I don’t know if I downloaded that one or not when I was on my quest to find an app I liked!
RE your wrist issues: You should look into a split keyboard. I haven't been able to get one myself yet, but it completely alters your body posture when typing.
I used to have an ergonomical one at work and it was nice to use. I think my biggest issue is I work more with my laptop on my lap in the living room so the wrist posturing is just terrible. I should try to use my desk more than I do!
Thanks for this video! I hate dictating punctuations because they disrupt my flow. By the way, since Otter output is just a huge wall of text, do you go back and punctuate dialogue manually? Or do you have some easier way? Thanks!
I make sure to use a dialogue tag like “he says, she says.” Then go back and control F when I’m editing, and manually add them, and change up or delete extra tags. :)
@@TheCourtneyProject Thanks! That's really helpful! (And you're up so early! :) )
@@NLee895 LOL! Night owl hours! ❤️
My wrists pop too. 15 years of banking, 5 years of being a massage therapist, and writing for 5ish years.
We could prob start a band with our pops. Haha!
I use noise cancelling ear buds! The mic has NC on it, too, so it works GREAT! Do you still dictate with Otter?
Have you've ever tried Lilly Speech? It's one I've been looking into.
Ok I. Didn't realize that's what it's called I've been doing it for the last few books I wrote I had a basic book outline now I'm looking for optimization
My wrists are the same--thought yoga might help but slacked right off that bus!! lol
Oh man, we all have slacked off! I’ve tried yoga but my wrists are so weak they just become sore from the poses. My doctor suggested surgery to correct it but I’m like nahhhhh, I can deal for now. Between being on computers all the time then waiting tables in college, my wrists are trash. 😂 If yoga helps, please let me know!
@@TheCourtneyProject I was told it was a case of: 'do more regular yoga, it'll hurt less" so...notsomuch. :/

Hi Courtney! I am trying out dictation, even though I am blind. Do you think using a plug-in play mic would work to help improve dictation? Have you heard of any blind people using Otter that area?
Hi! I’ve heard upgrading your mic can help with dictation. I’ve also been trying out the dictation that’s built in on my phone/iPad through the accessibility option and I have to say it’s pretty darn good! I love that you can have it read it back to you as well.
i like ipad for dictation, the new ones like even air 3, forward, has offline dictation.
Does the app put quotes around speech if so how can I get this to work because I can’t at the moment 😅
Wow, a year later and CZcams is serving this up to me! Curious if you are still using it after all this time?
Yep! I still practice with it. I’m not as savvy as I’d like to be but I hope to focus more on it in 2023!
@@TheCourtneyProject I've been using the built in with Word since they aquired and included Dragon. It's the best so far besides Google's free Live Transcribe, but I haven't found a great workflow for it (getting it into Word or Scrivener)
I'm an Android user so not sure if it's different, but I'm wondering how easily it picks up background noise. I cannot function really without background noise and we always have the TV on for that. I cannot focus without it, but would love to try dictation. I can't afford any mic attachments, etc so I'm wondering if Otter would be goid for me. Thanks!
It’s pretty sensitive to a TV! The only reason I know is because I was dictating and when I would pause it would pick up what the TV in the other room was saying. I’d still try it, maybe listen to the TV on low and see if it picks it up! Might work out fine. My tv was blaring.
@@TheCourtneyProject Ah, that's what I was worried about. I've downloaded it, so will have to see if it can reach a point of not picking it up. We generally have the TV fairly loud to not hear the neighbours all.the time heh
I would love to try dictation but these kids of mine I think would interfere with the background noise.
Oh yes, I think it would be hard with little ones around and TVs turned up.
Can pantsers dictate? How do you move thoughts to words?
The only way I’ve known of my pantser friends dictating is they’ve created bullet points of action scenes before they dictate so then they have a loose roadmap. Other than that, I’ve not really heard of anyone just going by the seat of their pants…however, I’m sure they do exist!
I got excited by this video and tried Otter with my Australian accent. It was terrible. I couldn't even get one clean sentence. That's disappointing. I'll stick with dragon on PC. It was 99% accurate with my accent out of the box and adds punctuation just fine. I just thought it would be cool to try an app on my phone.
Since I’m not a PC user, Dragon isn’t even an option for me on my laptop. Sucks it didn’t work out for you!
What's the name of the program you past your text into for editing after you send your dictation to your email
Was it Scrivener or Google Docs? Lol, I don’t remember where I said it in the video. If it wasn’t those, please timestamp me about where it is.
If you say "New Line" it will add a new paragraph.
I've been wanting to try dictation. I can't wait till they invent something that can just read your brain & type it out for you as you think it, lol.
Haha yes! Like install a USB and let it write my thoughts! 😂😂
With my accent, this is never going to happen 😂
Haha you never know!
5000 words per hour would be cool.
